I’m frustrated but not at bloody Discord lol. Moral of the story my ass. If barely any of your staff writers re-signed up for your conditions, that’s maybe a sign you did something wrong. But no, they will just continue wielding the axe until there’s nothing left. We’re not even allowed to mention it. Surprised I’m on one of the few speaking out about it who remains unbanned tbh (and I try and spread the message, I’m not commenting on album threads anymore - a dead site is the way forward, let it burn and maybe the message will get thru, probably not but whatever, we can try). |

pyroflare77
06.30.25 | This place is a tomb anyway with zero effort being made to move stuff over to a website that works. Closed registrations is a dead site, period. If the admins/mods already don't care about the site, I don't see the purpose of the staff grandstanding to try and make the admins budge when it's already clear nothing is going to be done. |

06.30.25 | Well that's a bunch of actually interesting people gone from the site. Looking at the staff list, there's like one or two people I recognize as having good/interesting taste left. But that dork that glazes Health and Manson albums (jaysus!) is still on, along with a bunch of prog and metalcore wankers. I don't know, sounds like the end of the road for a very average, unremarkable user like me. Seems pretty black and white - a bunch of asocial dorks powertripping on a dying site. 06.30.25 | okay I mean granted, it's impossible to know for sure since things could have and likely have escalated even further behind the scenes in the meantime and I'm sure some have probably doubled down and what not... but correct me if I'm wrong any of these people, if they chose to be civil and accept that they may not get their way in regards to demands and roles, could come back to the site if they choose (or at least it seems like this was the case... like I said maybe that ship has sailed at this point)
I see it getting framed as o mean evil mods just banned 20+ people and it seems more like no, this group all got together and said "give us our way or we're all out" ie. it's self chosen
and I mean I kind of doubt that this is really the sum of it, but it seems to be being made out like this crusade is all revolving around normaloctagon having a staff/contributor role removed for the valid reason that reviews were not being produced which as far as I know is supposed to be the primary factor regarding these roles, not how tight you are with the clique... seems like it was actually probably overdue and that some stepping on toes in other ways may have prompted overdue action to finally be taken... probably has always been a problem here when it comes to the folks who apply for and serve in those roles... not meant to be an attack on this user just saying... I guess when the demotion was done some blog writings got deleted or something and this fanned the flames even more... I mean only the person who did it can truly say for certain whether that part was done deliberately or was an honest mistake/accident, but I'm pretty sure it was indicated that in regards to the deleted content, this could be resolved/undone |

Not that I have any opinion on normal being banned or demoted cuz I don’t really understand the context behind it, but output explicitly was not the reason, you’d know that if you just read the logs |

Norma was really active regarding weekly blog posts and did some stuff setting up metal interviews with Nex, he just wasn't the most prolific reviewer. I think we needed more meaningful blog post and interview action on the site as a way to have something unique and engaging and give the site a little more traction.
It was a needlessly stubborn move whether the mods were in the right or not. The site is gonna be relegated to 3 or 4 semi prolific writers and caps lock Hawks posting now. That's just not enough to truly carry a site that wanted to branch out even with an owner who doesn't really care |

in the logs sowing does mention output as one reason to demote normaloctagon, and that demotions were planned to be carried out by around this time. whether or not you believe him thats another story, but i don't think accusing sherenge of not reading the logs would help the conversation, especially since he's not wrong :// |

06.30.25 | it isn't wrong though... you trying to make out like it is a non-factor is what is wrong yet I'm the one being told "didn't read"

Hyperion1001
06.30.25 | you also have to take into account that that blog post is specifically written to make the mods look bad, so we’re clearly missing some context vis-à-vis Norma’s initial dismissal.
i also think it’s quite amusing that after years of reading leftist discourse on the internet and trying this “collective action” thing, they forgot that the power of collective action is based on labor power as leverage, but they forgot to take into account that they’re all volunteers who aren’t actually producing anything of value (because the owner doesn’t really care about the site or its content), so they immediately lost surprised pikachu style.
i think a few of them who aren’t the ringleaders (which honestly, good riddance) are gonna regret jumping in the bandwagon so quickly.

06.30.25 | I think it's worth noting that there has been - as far as I know - no communication on this site by the mods about the situation, especially since one of the criticisms leveled against them is a lack of transparancy. I've shoutboxed Sowing to ask what he thinks.
With so many active users gone, and no new users able to make an account, I don't really see much value for Sput anymore |
Hyperion1001
06.30.25 | yeah but like, you’ve got to see where the mods are coming from with the “we typically don’t explain mod actions” because if the set the precedent that they will explain every time they delete a comment or delete a list or whatever, then every user is gonna demand an explanation and there’s no way 4 of them can realistically handle all that.
the discourse surrounding this is being pretty unfair to them considering all they do to keep this site semi-functional for all of use to keep making our stupid little shitposts and lists. as far as users who actually do valuable labor for this site, the mods contribute significantly more than any of us, including staff, and, again, are doing it completely unpaid. im not saying they’re blameless in all this, but taking a knee jerk “mods bad because power” stance is exactly the kind of thinking that led to this exodus. |
Dedes
06.30.25 | Hmm
That first one is a fair point I spose
I'll hand them as much as it is a bit unfair to expect the same level of communication from a decidedly much smaller team i.e 4 vs...24/25 staffers total iirc
I do think that it would then still be sensible to try to induct more mods but I'm not entirely sure if that -is- even a possibility
IG it's just hard not to still be a little miffed given that I actually think this is the most prolific and ambitious staff team I've seen since I've been on sput in regards to actually promoting the site and keeping engagement alive in an absolute fucking dinosaur |
Dedes
06.30.25 | I do wish some of the staff didn't take such a HARDLINE anti-mod and relatively hateful stance towards the end since I don't think any of the mods were projecting any sort of real amorality, it's just rather that they operate in too rigid a process. |
Hyperion1001
06.30.25 | i do think some of them will come around after the dust settles a bit. and it seems the mods have left the door open for the majority of them to return. that will be the real test to see if they are indeed acting in good faith. |
Icebloom
06.30.25 | > yeah but like, you’ve got to see where the mods are coming from with the “we typically don’t explain mod actions”
It's fine to me they don't typically explain mod actions, but I think it's a completely different situation when 90% of staff is leaving. |

That’s fair, he does mention it as a contributing factor, but I think it’s clear from his initial long post that the main reason he outlines was that he tried to ransom his contributions in exchange for some capitulation from the mods. Sowing indicates that, along with certain other clashes, that was the final straw.
No disrespect intended @Sharenge, I probably shouldn’t have said you “didn’t read” but I do think it’s inaccurate to say the demotion of normal, at least according to the logs, was primarily a matter of lacking contributions. |

I just think it would all allow for more flexibility and leniency given that it's a much less necessitated agreement, and the more I've given it thought I mean this for both the mods and the staff. There's parallels in the sense of I supply X thing under Y agreement, but the actual necessity of it to the individual is vastly smaller than a job which ig is an obvious point.

That is also fair
Which is why I do believe now that maybe it was a bit wild for 19 staffers to decide to take a demotion for a cause that was only partially justifiable, although I also believe that maybe none of them thought the mods would be completely immutable on such a stance. In an ideal scenario if only for the sites even more sizeable drop in activity I'd imagine it'd best if Norm was reinstated and there was a little more direct back and forth between mods and staff even if this all began with a slightly overblown metric that kind of resulted in a needlessly pissy back and forth. I do hope the doors are still open and that at least a few of them return and that there is some sort of healthy metric that is established. I'm already missin Nex's sweet DM lists and honestly (with the understandable disdain for him in mind) Johnny's review analysis that honestly kind of inspired to me to get better at writing in my own individual manner. |

06.30.25 | Sputnik is also so so important to me. Extremely important. Essential to my development as a human, honestly. I would not have the music taste I do these days if I hadn’t come on here in tenth grade and made an account. I’ve learned SO much and discovered SO many bands because of this site, and even in its diminished state that remains true. Most recently I found Saidan because of Sputnik.
So to see it imploding in on itself is kind of a bummer, and I hope we see some of those staffers back. If what hawks is saying is to be believed, some were roped into this without much input and approval.
But all that being said, I honestly think this site will be a better place without some of the 19. Plenty of good writers that don’t have STAFF next to their name on here, and as long as the reviews and lists are sustained, I think 90% of us will be happy. This was never an integral space for blogging about music, and the emphasis put on that hasn’t done much for me personally. Maybe others differ but I’m here for review, dumpster fire comment sections, and stupid pointless lists |
mkmusic1995
06.30.25 | It's definitely a difficult landscape especially for a site that has already been struggling with a multitude of issues but if there's something that I've seen in the four years I've been here, this site persists and the talented writers and list makers will continue to make this a place worth visiting. |

Only one side made entitled ass childish demands and then took their ball and went home when mom and dad told them that wasn’t how adults got their way, and the more info that comes out the more it seems like it was a vocal minority who dragged down unwilling participants with their hardheaded “negotiation tactics.”

Frippertronics
06.30.25 | I'm sorry, but I don't necessarily see how a mass staff exodus, regardless of your thoughts on the individuals, is worth celebrating. We can't bring new blood to the site, let alone keep an actual presence outside of the little hugbox this place is and always has been. There has to be another way through, but this isn't it. Cutting people loose isn't going to make the site more active than it already is and that is incredibly frustrating. It's easy to just say good riddance and pretend that some of the people involved are going to want to come back (something I highly doubt, because frankly speaking, I don't see how there's any coming back from this), but who's going to step up then? You have someone who clearly doesn't care about the website and his handlers who are more than content to pretend everything's okay. Something has got to give at some point and shitflinging about it isn't the solution. |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.25 | For any resigned staff to comeback, I imagine it'd take a massive mod compromise and apology and probably some sort of authority shake up (such as a new mod or the stepping down of a mod)
All of which doesn't seem like it's happening |
Frippertronics
06.30.25 | I don't get the angle of "the staff were coerced into doing this" either. What do they have to gain by doing that? |
Hawks
06.30.25 | I know for 100% fact that not all staff members were on board. Do with that what you will, but a lot of them did just go along with it. |
Futures
06.30.25 | when you make an ultimatum what do you expect? once the mods give into one, they lose all of their power because they can then do this anytime to get whatever they want. you can pretend this would be a one time thing but that's naive.
the mods gave a shove sure i'll agree with that (even if the demotion is reasonable imo) but the answer isn't launching icbms in retaliation. just a touch disproportionate. |
Slex
06.30.25 | Literally regardless of what happened, having fucking 26 writers simultaneously quit is pathetic and embarrassing lol |
Frippertronics
06.30.25 | Hawks, I am curious, how do you know this? I don't see in any scenario how you pour all that time and effort into something you don't get any compensation for and decide one day "well, time to scorch earth this bitch!". It makes no rational sense.
With regards to the issue at hand, I do think two things should've been done: I think the concerns brought up, whatever you may think of them, should've been addressed and acknowledged. This is the team responsible for a good deal of this site's visibility, so I do feel their concerns should've been taken a bit more seriously. Secondly, cooler heads should've prevailed here. Immediately banning or demoting them was not the answer. If you really wanted this to be kept under wraps, just let them walk and cut your losses. Because they didn't do that, we have *this* to deal with. |
Frippertronics
06.30.25 | Like I'm sorry, what cause is there to celebrate this? It's remarkably bad optics from a site that has had problems like this before. |
Hawks
06.30.25 | "Hawks, I am curious, how do you know this?"

06.30.25 | i'm pretty sure normal wasn't even banned initially just demoted. something that has happened countless times for not contributing in this sites history, i do not think this is controversial. i think his work being deleted was a function of the demotion and was restored soon after. that basically should've been that. |

06.30.25 | I shall return when sput needs me most |

06.30.25 | I will leave it at this: this is unfortunate, embarrassing, even detrimental to keeping this site going. We already have a hard enough time keeping people interested, let alone getting mx to do something, and it's frustrating. There has to be another way.
Contributing to the site also hasn't been the end all be all to being a part of the team, as there are different things that can be done outside of your regular old reviewing. I don't buy that as a reason for his demotion at all. |

06.30.25 | I know it's a matter of time before this thread is potentially nuked but something I'm out of the loop on - what did Johnny do in all this? i don’t think anyone is celebrating this. there’s only one of the staffers im glad to see gone. it’s clearly hugely detrimental to the site. we need some resolution and the majority of them back, which i think everyone is hoping will happen once people have had time to cool off. |
Hyperion1001
06.30.25 | “why would they assume they'd be welcomed back?”
sowing specifically said that, barring 2 users, everyone would be welcome back if they changed their minds. as long as they stand by that, I don’t think how they handled this situation was this extremely unreasonable power grab some of the younger posters here seem to think it is. |

06.30.25 | I would like to say, I do understand robertsona being frustrated at not being able to have any control over his own content tbh
Also, I do understand wanting more communication over decisions by the mods. And to be fair, they never demanded that every user be told individually what causes their bands/demotions/etc, as that would be unrealistic. But staff are not that many people, surely they could at least explain when it's about /them/? 🤷♂️ |

06.30.25 | Hey there, everyone.
I am not coming here to throw gas on the fire (Myself and some others who left were not responsible for the doc that has been going around, and I am not terribly interested in litigating things further or speaking for anyone else), I - and I alone- want to clear up two things:
1.) Hawks has not been in contact with any of us in any meaningful way.
2.) We are not coming back here to write further reviews.
It's fine if anyone wants to stay here, and while the pool of writers is obviously shrinking there is still quality. I quite like and agree with the Lorde review that's up and POS'd as likely my final act on Sput that isn't this comment. We're working on something else in good time, but it'll be ready when it's ready. I'm proud of my time on Sput and hope the site keeps going in whatever capacity. |

At the same time, each side of this dilemma reeks of their own self-possessed arrogance. Y'all write reviews for free on a website that has as much traffic as a stoplight at 3 in the morning. 07.01.25 | Sometimes I wish I never deleted my old & embarrassing reviews. I remember the first review I ever wrote, it was when I was 16, and it was on American Idiot by Green Day. I wrote in the review that one of the many reasons the album was impressive was that you could interpret the lyrics/narrative in a variety of ways. Yes, I know in hindsight that's not the most compelling argument to make about why an album is GOOD, but I was 16.
Anyway, I remember one of the first comments I got was something along the lines of "what kind of vapid, horrible music are you listening to normally to where an album is suddenly good to you because it can be INTERPRETTED??"
That comment always makes me think of Johnny even though I don't even think it was Johnny who wrote it. Dude will both be missed but also not really. |

07.01.25 | As is tradition when big sputnik drama goes down and my name gets mentioned even though I've been banned for longer than I was a part of the site (lol) someone has alerted me to the drama and i have arrived! Let me (Iluvatar/john hanson) clear a few things up:
1. I have no recollection of who Hyperion1001 is. Sorry if I was a dick to you little buddy. You should really be over it but alas we all have our neurosis, mine happen to lead me back here every 3 or 4 years!
2. Me and Electric City/Adam Downer were banned and kicked from staff for saying the intro to some other staffers review was bad in the sort of private (at that point pretty much anyone could join if anyone in the group liked you enough to invite you) mezzanine crew. Brandon Scott** (rip) tipped off Jom and since Jom always hated me and probably didn't care about Adam as much anymore, him and mx decided to just nuke us (is this the last important mx act to sputnik? seems like it from the state of the site). There was some defense of us in Olympus (very funny name for a private staff forum) and jom/mx gave us Emeritus. The wild thing was other staffers had been banned for many, many offenses and I think I had only ever gotten a like 3 day ban for changing my neil perry review to a bunch of gibberish after I decided it sucked.
3. To my knowledge no one else was banned or kicked from staff for this. Just us two. I know Spat Out Plath/Dave was winding down his involvement here around that time and I had a short convo with him around then, but anyone else who left staff was completely unrelated/just part of the natural churn of disinterest in the site over time.
It is very funny that nothing has improved in mod communication with the sites writers and that the site itself seemingly gets more and more busted as the years have gone by. I wish I could say I left the site of my own volition but I did not. I do wish one of the mods would finally listen to me when I ask for my reviews to be deleted from the site but alas, it seems as though I will remain a ghost of mediocre review past! |

07.01.25 | The year is 1984. I first discover Ride The Lightning in November of the year. It was snowing outside and it was very cold men. I put record on,, It start with medival style music, and then when in calm place? Thunder guitar take control! This is great start for this record men. Lars Ulrich is the drums for this record and at end of song, he is the lightning with bass pedal and snare madness! After this song the name of record is a song and plays well. For Whom The Bell Tolls is up and it deliver best of Metallica riff by Cliff Burton. He play guitar men? hhehehe this is bass! I can believe this. Then best Metallica song is playing,, soft music and guitars. Fade To Black is hitting me hard and it build up with epic solo and chill feeling of depressed. Trapped Under Ice brings energy back to the life here with great open riff by James Hetfield. Escape is starting up and Kirk Hammett is playing on the leads here men. This is song of good structure and deliver a good fade out ending. Here we go men! This moment we wait for! Creeping Death! This song is Metallica well known effort and it is personal favorite of my listens today. This song is about the times of Bible in Christian lore men. I believe this happen and is scary song. The end is no vocals and has great style for close the album up. The Call Of Ktulu is epic! Dave Mustaine has wrote this song when he was playing with the Metallica men,, if you did know. The last riff of song end this record and it is best way to ever end. I have never listen to better ending for any recording and I listen to many metal! This is all I say about Ride The Lightning. Thank for reading and apology for english is not good. |

But I suppose it's appropriate that the crowd unironically using the word "triggered" are also those who claim to be above any sort of drama.

I am not coming here to throw gas on the fire (Myself and some others who left were not responsible for the doc that has been going around, and I am not terribly interested in litigating things further or speaking for anyone else)

07.01.25 | Well to be fair Hatebreed does fit that 'thinking man's metal' tag. I don't remember if it was a guy from Pelican or other Post-Metal band who said it but that tag suits a lot of metal acts because of their changing, slow-mid paced tempo combined with intricate melodies and complex songwritings. 07.01.25 | I definitely thought it was 100% on the mods....before I got the ENTIRE story, as most people here seemed to do. Odal can post all the convos I had with staff and I could do the same thing when I was told one side of the story lol. I thought Norma was demoted because of a single comment he made, which of course made me think it was the mods being ridiculous. I was then told that everyone was fired and THAT made me think it was all on the mods. Wasn't until more info came trickling out that I realized it was a two-way street and both sides could've done things to handle it differently. Coming in here trying to act like I think I'm an "insider" is crazy work lol. I had convos with a lot of the guys and that's it. Yeah, I may have bad mouthed the mods, but once again, when I had only the staff's side. Nobody is talking about why Nex blocked me for no reason when I was messaging him to see if he was okay. I love 95% of the dudes that left and wish they'd reconsider. It always turns into "Hawks said this or that". Stand on your decision and don't post. It's nuts man.
Also LMAO @ me begging to stay in the loop. I did say "keep me in the loop" if/when a new site went up so I could keep in contact with people/said I was gonna miss guys. Didn't realize that was begging. Post where I begged Odal, please. |

07.01.25 | The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed. |

“ See, there are three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies think everyone can get along, and dicks just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes. And all the assholes want is to shit all over everything. So pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes! And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit!”
