It's all about mass. If you want to acoustically isolate yourself from the outside world you need to add mass to your surroundings to aid transmission loss. Things like egg cartons and other light weight porous materials only dampen reflections which do almost nothing. You can attempt to make yourself a iso-booth in a room, perhaps. Or, attempt to scream in a more central location within the house; sound goes right through windows and the flanks of doorways and cracks.
Or you could just scream into a pillow... |
