| The Last 5 Gigs I've Been To -
- have been awesome. Here's what I thought of them; | 1 | | The National High Violet
I didn?t enjoy The National?s songs as much as I do as on record, but their
songs transposed perfectly to a live setting, and it was interesting seeing
how all their songs are put together. I He jumped off the stage and ran
upstairs to about the third balcony of the theater. For the most part of the
show he staggered around and sometimes shrieked at the end of lines.
Berninger was great the whole show, singing his lines perfectly and
entertained the crowd for the most of it. It was interesting to the subtle
effects he does to make the show all the more entertaining; the click of his
drink agianst the microphone to begin the first song, the shrieks and the
funny banter towards the end of the gig. t was amazing watching drummer
Bryan Devendorf in the closer ?Terrible Love,? but while the drums are my
favourite aspect of that song, it was hard to keep my eyes off Berninger
wandering around the crowd upstairs, with what would have to be a 40 mtr
mic lead. | 2 | | The Getaway Plan Requiem
I wasn?t a fan of newer material, which you could probably gather from my
review for it, but I went along hoping to hear some older songs, being a fan
of the band right back in the earlier post-hardcore days. The newer material
came off really tight and was done justice live, but the crowd was really
tame, and the band were lacking energy. Soundwise: awesome, Presence
wise: Boring. Last song ?requiem? was great, transforming from acoustics to
balls-to-the-wall screaming in an old school mic. | 3 | | La Dispute Wildlife
Bad song choice hampered this from being a beast of a gig. No King Park?
No such small hands? Really? Perhaps they were over playing the latter,
and the former being too long, but the crowd was calling out for those
songs long after they had left the stage. What they did play was still pretty
decent, including ?why it scares me? and ?new storms for old lovers? which
both garnered a pretty big reception from the crowd. ?Wildlife? doesn?t
seems to be a record that works all that well live (in terms of crowd-
pleasers and intensity), resulting in the aforementioned ?heavier? songs
seeming to be the highlights of the set. | 4 | | Death Cab for Cutie Codes and Keys
Very, Very, talented band. Death Cab have perhaps earned their successes
on the back of Gibbard?s lyrics, but here, they weren?t at the forefront. I?m
not sure if his mic was down, or his not as loud live, but some lines couldn?t
be heard during the rockier tunes, so the focus was more on the rest of the
band. I hadn?t listened to latest album, which they played alot from, but
they did play songs from alot of older stuff. Translaticism was the choice cut
for the closer, it was reproduced great live. | 5 | | Bon Iver Bon Iver, Bon Iver
This concert was something different, it wasn?t a grimy pub gig, it was a full
blown orchestral concert, in a massive outdoor auditorium, cleverly placed
looking out over my city. Vernon?s voice was crisp and fully punctuated by
flawless mixing, and it was both intimate and massive. If I?ve come to any
realization about Bon Iver?s music after last night, it?s that it?s not just
Justin Vernon anymore. It?s a full blown band, with violins, saxophones, two
drum sets, two guitarists, a kazoo?, a guy just on triangles and assorted
musical objects. It was a fully realized picture of what Bon Iver were
intending with the doubly eponymous sophomore effort; the attention to
detail on that album is impeccable and it was in full view here. The band
opened with Perth, which is my hometown, Vernon laying claim to the title
so that we would ?think they were cool.? What was striking about this
concert was that Bon Iver?s light and ehteral songs sounded absolutely
massive, and dare I say it, just a tad heavy? What?s more is that it wasn?t
simply playing through your back catalogue. Vernon and his crew did alot
more with the songs that were heard on the record. Vernon himself would
stretch his voice in new ways, improvising vocal harmonies on top of the
already gorgeous songs, and some songs would wind down into full blown
jazz jams. ?Towers,? for example, evolved into a 10 minute saxophone solo,
and ?Flume? dropped into stuttered piano notes and percussion effects,
before bouncing back into the chorus. My only qualm with the concert was
the back up singing, it was good and tuneful, but I would have preferred to
hear Vernon?s voice just by itself, as it is that piercing. The highlight of the
set for me was flume, where the band went quite, and that lone falsetto
sung ?only love is all maroon.? It will be interesting to see where Bon Iver go
from here, because the music here seems that accomplished, that the
direction it?s heading in seems already done almost too well. If you have
the chance to see Bon Iver in your town, do it. It?s well worth it. | |

03.08.12 | Did you see La Dispute in Melbourne??
I saw them in Melbourne last month which was amazing, I don't see why they couldn't squeeze in Such Small Hands but it didn't really bother me and I understand why they didn't play Kings Park though the rest of the set made up for it, flawless. | SCREAMorphine
