PaleCompanion
07.27.11 | In addition to Rain Dogs, get Swordfishtrombones |
Comatorium.
07.27.11 | its pretty wtf but im liking it. |
Eclectic
07.27.11 | Small Change and most of his earlier work is great if you want blues, Bone Machine is more experimental rock (he attempts falsetto at one point and it's downright weird), and his latest stuff is very jazz orientated. Pick a style, there are a few more in between those but they're the best 3 in my opinion. |
WeepingBanana
07.27.11 | Swordfishtrombones is a great one but def start with Rain Dogs |
Comatorium.
07.27.11 | Loving Rain Dogs. |
BigHans
07.27.11 | I like Closing Time the best out of what I've heard. Its a more straight up folk album. Rain Dogs is a bit too avant-garde for me for the most part. Hang Down Your Head rules though. |
Comatorium.
07.27.11 | Its really fucking weird. |
TheFonz123
07.27.11 | Tom waits is fucking incredible listen to Rain Dogs more often, orphans (it's a lot but it's good) swordfishtrombones, Closing Time, and Mule Variations |
wabbit
07.27.11 | omg you guys are such dumbasses yes Rain Dogs is his best album but it's the hardest to get into cause it is a little weird (So I am assuming most of you have never actually listened to it and are just saying Rain Dogs to get your elitist dig hard).
Start with small change and closing time then just go through in chronological order. |
DominionMM1
07.27.11 | "The Heart Of Saturday Night" is a great, and overlooked, record of his. |

07.27.11 | "So I am assuming most of you have never actually listened to it and are just saying Rain Dogs to get your elitist dig hard"
uhh no |
bab808
07.28.11 | you can't go wrong with anything he's done since the 80s really. obviously rain dogs is incredible, but you definitely need to check out mule variations, swordfishtrombones and bone machine at least |
SirPabstOfBeerShire
07.28.11 | That was such an incredible show. I just wish they had played more than 10 songs! I was talking to the bassist after the show and he said they listened to "designed like dice" before the show just to decide if they could still play it, and they were going to but it was just too hot to keep playing :< Badass show none the less though! |
ComfortablyDumb
07.28.11 | Closing Time and The Heart Of Saturday Night are definitely the easiest to get into, seeing as how they were recorded before he started singing in the gravely rough way he's known for. After that, you pretty much can't go wrong with any of his releases. Standouts would be: Rain Dogs, Blue Valentine, Nighthawks, Bone Machine, Mule Variations, and Orphans.
Seriously though, he's amazing. Get everything. |

i think tom waits "weirdness" is overstated, at most its just some clankity percussion and lyrics about one eyed dwarfs. pretty cartoonish really. everyone here should have already heard enough music not to get put off by that |
clercqie
07.28.11 | Should get Waits out of my dad's record collection and start to listen to him... |
Comatorium.
07.29.11 | what's his most accessible one where he does use that gravelly singing style? rain dogs is nifty for sure but it is hard to get into...
Pabst- dude it fucking sucked that it was so hot, they better play Dice when they come back in December. |
qwe3
07.29.11 | swordfishtrombones |
wabbit
07.29.11 | I dunno if Singapore was the first song you heard by him and you never listened to beefheart before I think you'd be turned off |
Comatorium.
07.29.11 | I'd be lying if i said i wasnt like "da fuck is this supposed to be?" but i was definitely intrigued. |
porch
07.29.11 | how are downtown train, hang down your head, time, gun street girl, jockey full of bourbon, union square, blind love, walking spanish etc etc inaccessible songs, wtf
give rain dogs another try |
ffs
07.29.11 | rain dogs has some weird experimental elements i guess but i definitely wouldnt call it "avant garde" and you should have no problem getting into it as long as you're not gay as hell |
