Beer Plus

A shot and a beer? Great. But a shot in a beer should be one of your go-to's the rest of the summer, because the hit of the right liquor is the best thing you can do for an ice-cold pint. Take the example set by the Irish Car Bomb and class it up considerably. Think of a poured pint less as a finished product and more as a malty canvas. But remember, this isn't about getting wasted faster; the shot needs to bring a complementary flavor to the table. The idea is to pair a minor note in the liquor with one in the beer.

For grill-side sipping, scrap the citrus slice in your wheat beer with citrus liqueur. Try: Hitachino Nest White Ale + Pallini Limoncello

Remember Tequiza, the tequila-flavored beer that vanished from gas-station convenience stores a few years back? Good idea, horrible execution. Add a shot of mezcal to a nice saison for a smoky, spicy kick. Try: Ommegang Hennepin + Del Maguey Mezcal Vida

In eighteenth-century England, savvy drinkers ordered half-and-halfs: stale beer blended with fresh beer from the brewery. Those Limeys were onto something, because blending can make two great beers even better.

How about a better black and tan? Possibly the best example of what two beers - one light, one dark - can do for each other. Use the most hardcore imperial stout you can find with a nice pale ale. Try: Yeti Imperial Stout + Stone Pale Ale

Ballsy styles from different brewing heritages can often play really well together. The fruity notes of a Belgian wheat beer can round out the bone-dry finish of a German pilsner. Unibroue Maudite + Troegs Sunshine Pils

Take the edge off a heady, hoppy IPA by mixing in a mellower pale ale. The pale ale bulks up while the IPA chills out, keeping all its floral, citrusy notes without the tongue-scraping bitter kick. Try: Avery Mahraja Imperial IPA + Great Lakes Burning River
