1High on Fire
Death is this Communion

What a great and unique sound. They got rhythm, they got that guttural
sound, but they're also easy to listen to. Themes include everything in the
world of metal and vikings, and for that, these guys just kick so much ass
for a trio. Hard to pick one album, but overall, I enjoyed this album more
than Snakes for the Divine (seems more like they're doing what Mastodon
USED to be doing...), while Son's of Thunder from their previous album
actually had the most listens. Great stuff.
2Dethklok
The Dethalbum

Also on tour with High on Fire, these guys are just phenomenal for what
seems like they started as a joke band. But make no jokes, Dethklok and
Brennan Small are writing songs and riffs that are the embodiment of metal.
Sometimes it may seem like they are just a too literal, with tracks like "Go
Forth and Die," but this is seriously well structured metal and a joy to listen
to. Hard to pick between both albums, so we'll just say start with the first
and then pick up the second.
3Converge
Axe to Fall

I haven't heard any of Converge's other work, but wow. This stuff is brutal
and hard to understand, but sometimes they throw out some melody as
well. It's a real treat, however, when you're looking for something hard yet
it doesn't leave my head with the feeling of a developing aneurysm.
4Opeth
Morningrise

WOW! These guys have a lot of material. Where to begin!! For the most
part, Opeth is a bit slow on my ears, but it's very melodic and foreboding. I
really like it. I will say to give Morningrise a try, however I'm not sure it's
the most highly recommended album. But for the sake of this list, I had to
include this album solely for the track, "Black Rose Immortal." Simply epic.
5In Flames
Lunar Strain

When I bought this album a few years back, I originally thought that I had
wasted my money. Boy, going back and giving it more listens was I wrong.
This is some great material, somehow making me feel transported between
old Celtic/England and hell. I think I originally heard of them on Guitar Hero
III, and got the album and it was nothing like what I was listening to at the
time. Things change, and this album still sounds great.
6The Black Dahlia Murder
Nocturnal

I think I liked these guys more at first than I do now, but they're still really
awesome. Just at times it sounds like they're just playing so fast it's all
chaos. But I do really enjoy their albums, just hard to separate them from
one another. It's obvious they have improved their skills with time, but I
had to include their 2007 album because "What a Horrible Night to Have a
Curse" has to be the best (and only) Castlevania dedicated metal song in
the world. Hands down fun and amazing to listen to.
7Protest the Hero
Kezia

I think I've included this album in the past, and was one of the first albums
that really made me look "concept album" up on Wikipedia. They were
pretty young when they made this album (right out of high school I believe)
and it's really one of my favorite albums. Possibly not as heavy as the rest
of the albums on the list, but one you really shouldn't pass up.
