Another 2010 List... ...except This One Rules!
So this is the best stuff I've come across this year. Not a particularly rblues heavy year which rrrwas disappointing by nevermind eh. Here rwe go. Any recs for stuff I should have listened to rrrthis year are ralways welcome. |
1 | | Janelle Monae The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV)
Best thing I've listened to all year by a mile. Just an amazing creation with
such variation. This album is so ambitious and ridiculous yet it manages to
be more cohesive that it has any right to. Fantastic! |
2 | | The National High Violet
Their third perfect album in a row. Everything that needs to be said about
this album already has so I won't bore you! |
3 | | The Gaslight Anthem American Slang
Probably not quite as good as '59 Sound but I'm always gonna be a sucker
for some Springsteen influence Americana |
4 | | Bruce Springsteen The Promise
Speaking of the Boss this collection of material from the Darkness sessions
really gives a fresh insight into the work that went into that album. I love
the alternate version of Racing in the Street and Candy's Boy is real gem
that offsets Candy's Room brilliantly. We see the original version of
Because the night as well which is fast becoming a Springsteen favourite of
mine. I realise it's a bit dubious putting a load of material from 1978 on a
2010 list but, hey, it's my list so screw you! |
5 | | Slash Slash
This was a real surprise for me. I was expecting this to be shit but there
are great collaborations here that really make it great including Myles
Kennedy and, oddly, Fergie. |
6 | | Frightened Rabbit The Winter of Mixed Drinks
Great follow-up album from a great Scottish Indie band. |
7 | | Titus Andronicus The Monitor
Loved this more than Airing of Grievances. Great album, lets hope they
keep up the great material in the future. |
8 | | John Butler Trio April Uprising
Far more accessible than previous albums and as such it doesn't really
compare to Sunrise Over Sea but I really enjoyed this album nonetheless.
Revolution and C'mon Now are the standouts |
9 | | Joe Bonamassa Black Rock
A more Greek-influenced album (i think that's where it was recorded). A
really great collection of songs including a great cover of Leonard Cohen's
Bird on A Wire. |
10 | | Joanna Newsom Have One on Me
Lengthy, odd but amazingly engaging. I'm still discovering new facets to
this album with every listen. |
11 | | The Weakerthans Live At Burton Cummings Theatre
First time i'd really given this band a listen, and what a great introduction it
is. The only reason this is so low is because it's a live album and essentially
a greatest hits album and so feels like a bit of a cheat in that respect! |
12 | | Cee Lo Green The Lady Killer
Awesomely catchy album from the Soul Machine. Stand-outs are Wildflower
and a great cover of No-Ones gonna Love You. |
13 | | Wintersleep New Inheritors
These guys are building up a very impressive back catalogue. Another
really good album. |
14 | | Band of Horses Infinite Arms
See 13. |
15 | | Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band Live! In Chicago
Fantastic live blues rock album, just brilliant. Love Kenny's guitar playing and combining that with what was
clearly an amazing crowd this is a massively good live album. |
