| 30 | | The Books The Way Out
Chain of Missing Links (Sort of feel bad for dissing on this band occasionally
but hey. That's what I do, sometimes.) |
| 29 | | Sufjan Stevens The Age of Adz
Age of Adz |
| 28 | | Curren$y Pilot Talk
Address |
| 27 | | Baths Cerulean
Lovely Bloodflow |
| 26 | | Dark Time Sunshine Vessel
Run |
| 25 | | Drake Thank Me Later
Shut it Down (Really good, guys. Some of it tapers off in the last third but
full of lush jams.) |
| 24 | | The National High Violet
Terrible Love |
| 23 | | Kings of Leon Come Around Sundown
Pyro (Also felt weird. Especially putting over CERTAIN albums....*looks up
at 24*.) |
| 22 | | Hellogoodbye Would it Kill You?
When We First Kissed (Really good in its classic pop grooves and melodies.
Don't hate.) |
| 21 | | Gorillaz Plastic Beach
On Melancholy Hill |
| 20 | | Gold Panda Lucky Shiner
Snow & Taxis |
| 19 | | Toro y Moi Causers of This
Blessa |
| 18 | | Vampire Weekend Contra
White Sky |
| 17 | | Emeralds Does it Look Like I'm Here?
Access Granted |
| 16 | | Menomena Mines
TAOS |
| 15 | | Deerhunter Halcyon Digest
Helicopter |
| 14 | | M.I.A. Maya
Teqkilla (Really fucking good, and hard to listen to, and strange and
impenetrable and all that. She had to make this album, we can all agree. I
just happen to find its abrasive qualities thrilling.) |
| 13 | | Teebs Ardour
Moments |
| 12 | | The Walkmen Lisbon
Juveniles |
| 11 | | Anais Mitchell Hadestown
Doubt Comes In (Another relative obscurity. Sort of like Joanna in its
irresistible sprawl and also its folky goodness (though calling Joanna "folky"
is pushing it), but sort of more focused. It has a fucking LIBRETTO, for
Christ's sake. Whole thing tells the story of Orpheus and Persephone and
all that, but it pulls it off with style and charm; shows that "ridiculous" still
has a place in music.) |
| 10 | | Avey Tare Down There
Laughing Hieroglyphic |
| 9 | | Max Richter Infra
Journey 5 (Total sucker for this guy's stuff. He could release the same
album five times (and, to the (admittedly rare) haters, he pretty much has)
and I'd lap it up.) |
| 8 | | Titus Andronicus The Monitor
The Battle of Hampton Roads |
| 7 | | Women Public Strain
Can't You See |
| 6 | | Flying Lotus Cosmogramma
Galaxy in Janaki |
| 5 | | Joanna Newsom Have One on Me
In California |
| 4 | | Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
All of the Lights |
| 3 | | Corinne Bailey Rae The Sea
I'd Do It All Again (Suppose I should explain myself on this one. All you need
to know is that, in wake of a tragedy (her husband's death; 2008 (although
best of all is that you DON'T really need to know this; think of it like, I don't
know, Bon Iver's girlfriend breaking up with him pre-"Emma")), Rae opted
not to record mourning songs (as many critics seemed to want her to) but
an album that is just fucking human. Raw sexuality, sadness--yes--but also
happiness. Release. It may be the most visibly flawed this high on this list,
but in its raw humanity, it's perhaps the most beautiful. Also, the
songwriting is fucking excellent; Rae has an amazing ear for beautifully
strange chord changes, probably the best in that manner since Stevie
Wonder.) |
| 2 | | The Tallest Man on Earth The Wild Hunt
Burden of Tomorrow |
| 1 | | Janelle Monae The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV)
Tightrope (Oh, also, nothing came close. Sorry.) |
