Songs About Addiction Pt. 3

Yes, part three. THe descriptions might become redundant, but I feel they are necessary.
1Alice in Chains
Junkhead

Layne Staley was the definition of a tortured soul. He sang about the trials and tribulations of heroin addiction on "Nutshell," but then glorifies the denial of addiction with "Junkhead." Junkhead is a great example of what goes through a newly-addicted heroin addict's head as he tries to justify and defend his habit.
2The Who
Behind Blue Eyes

It sounds like such a beautiful song, but it delves into the horrors of the thought processes an addict might go through, and the shame they feel from it. It's also a song about self-victimization, which is probably the worst part of being an addict.
3Steppenwolf
Snowblind Friend

The horrors of replacing one chemical with another. An addict will do anything to get some sort of fix, whether it be using their drug of choice or replacing it with something else, whether they truly like it or not. Addicts will do anything to stay away from the feelings and thoughts that haunt them.
4Down
Learn From This Mistake

Taking an anti-drug message from Phil Anselmo is like taking relationship advice from O.J. Simpson, but Phil tells about the perils of jumping back and forth from addiction to recovery, and the temptations that follow. All you need is that one fix to end it, but all you need to survive is that one push from yourself or another.
5A Perfect Circle
Gravity

A song about the "highs" and lows of drug addiction, the pleasure you get from the fix, and disappointed, lost feeling of coming down. It might sound like it's glorifying the use of drugs at times, but it also tells of the sordid side that comes along with it. You might feel good for the time that you're high, but in the end, everything just gets worse.
6Husker Du
Pink Turns To Blue

Thanks to Porchular for re-introducting this one out to me. When you're an addict, there is no other friend out there like your fix. You ignore all the people reaching out to you, because you believe they're only out to make you unhappy, therefore, your only friend is your drug.
7Depeche Mode
Peace

A song about leaving the world you once knew behind, a world filled with devils and demons. The hardest thing an addict can do is move on from the world they created for themselves, and into a much brighter reality.
8Exodus
Deathamphetamine

A little bit more of an extreme look at the depravity of addiction. It's a much more forceful, blunt message than what an addict wants to hear, but it's the truth.
9Mad Season
Wake Up

A song about the slow suicide that is addiction, and about the silent cries for help that ensue. You can "cry to God" all you want, but no God, Christian or not, will save you unless you're truly willing to change who you are and what you do. Drug use might define who you are, but you can change that definition any time you want.
10Van Morrison
Behind the Ritual

There are many delusions a drug addict has to deal with, but the most powerful I believe could also be the most misleading. The notion that one can find "spirtuality" through habitual drug use is a lie, and that lie can lead you down a path you cannot trace back. Spirituality is found through an inward search for one's true self, not some outside source, whether it be religion or drug use.
