12.06.10 | Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters
Panopticon - Collapse
Cold Body Radiation - The Great White Emptiness
Twilight - Monument To Time End
dunno if they're like anything here, but they're all post-black metal, and they're all fucking excellent. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | WITTR are certainly not post-black metal |
Athom
12.06.10 | Get the new Twilight album. it's not exactly what you're looking for but a lot better than what you've got. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | Yeah new Twilight rules. |
hesperus
12.06.10 | Caina - Temporary Antennae |
BallsToTheWall
12.06.10 | Pretty gay that post black metal generally only signifies post punk/rock influenced black metal.
Listen to Blutmound-Thirteen Urban Ways. Pretty diverse, they have a saxophone player and shit. |
luci
12.06.10 | Arizmenda - Within the Vacuum of Infinity
Paysager D'Hiver - Winterkaelte
|
Crysis
12.06.10 | are both atmospheric and ambient black metal, respectively |
dreamobile
12.06.10 | Nachtmystium goes for prog/psych on Assassins which is pretty great |
Bitchfork
12.06.10 | Yeah Alcest is terrible.
Blut Aus Nord-The Work that Transforms God
Ash Borer/Fell Voices-Split
too bored to give recs
neither are stereotypical post-black but you'll probably like em |
AngelofDeath
12.06.10 | Drudkh - Estrangement
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
All you need. New Twilight is only decent. |
Relinquished
12.06.10 | ^ pretty sure those are not post-black metal |
kangaroopoo
12.06.10 | trinacria - travel now journey infinitely (neurosis/enslaved type sound) |
ctaxxxx
12.06.10 | Shit that was fast with the comments. Thanks for the recs guys. Will check em out. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | Be wary that most of what was rec'd here so far falls under atmospheric black metal |
AngelofDeath
12.06.10 | Ashes is a post-metal album with black metal-esque vocals, so close enough. And Estrangement is extremely post-y so whatever. |
wyankeif1337
12.06.10 | "what was rec'd here so far falls under atmospheric black metal"
he might be right, just stick with Twilight |
luci
12.06.10 | You're right that my reccs are better labelled as atmospheric (and ambient) black metal. How would you distinguish this subgenre from post-black metal? I don't see a clear distinction between the two. |
AngelofDeath
12.06.10 | The albums that comprise this list aren't even post-black metal anyway. They're more blackgaze. |
wyankeif1337
12.06.10 | Atmospheric/ambient bm has ambient sections. Post-bm has post-rock influences.
That's about as far as my knowledge on the subject goes. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | I would call a true "post-black metal" album to be a mix of post-rock and black metal, meaning that it contains a gradual evolutionary buildup integrated into the song structures with an absolute minimal emphasis on vocals, while still retaining the harshness of black metal in the form of the distortion guitars, shitty production and shrieked vocals (when they are present). Atmospheric black metal doesn't necessarily rely on a premise of buildups and vocals are pretty prevalent. Ambient black metal switches between pure dark ambient and straight-up black metal or melds the two together somehow. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | I would agree, though, that the albums in the list are mostly black metal/shoegaze. |
AngelofDeath
12.06.10 | Estrangement is more or less an even mixture of atmospheric and post-black metal. Blood in Our Wells is a somewhat better album but has less elements of post-rock/metal. Microcosmos has more, but I just don't care for it as much. |
wyankeif1337
12.06.10 | What's one really good true post-bm album? |
luci
12.06.10 | Ah okay thanks, that made the differences clearer to me. I think the problem is that the "atmospheric" label could have been better chosen for this subgenre of black metal. Post-black metal and ambient black metal both involve a reliance on atmosphere too but it is misleading to label them as atmospheric black metal because that gives the wrong impression. |
Crysis
12.06.10 | If you're willing to call Agalloch black metal (which is a stretch, I know), then I'd say they would be the best example. Otherwise the line really gets fuzzy because a lot of post-bm bands include shoegaze in their sound (i.e. Cold Body Radiation). Sun Of The Blind is also a good choice as well. |
ctaxxxx
12.06.10 | There's another list similar to mine labeled as "Blackgaze" but I figured I'd go with Post BM just cause. It doesn't matter anyway, its all a different take on Black Metal...
As for the Atmospheric/Ambient BM recs, rec away. Your talking to a Drudkh, Burzum, Ash Borer, etc. fan. Just check my other list. Most likely i've already listened to a lot of them though. |
AngelofDeath
12.06.10 | Yeah, Sun of the Blind's Skullreader would be a solid example and an overall great album. |
Bitchfork
12.06.10 | well post-rock doesn't mean climax it means using rock instruments to create an ethereal or lush soundscape that's foreign to rock music so a direct melding of the two could indeed go as far as alcest or blut aus nord and most casc. bm |
Bitchfork
12.06.10 | "As for the Atmospheric/Ambient BM recs, rec away. Your talking to a Drudkh, Burzum, Ash Borer, etc. fan. Just check my other list. Most likely i've already listened to a lot of them though."
if you don't care about production there are a few lln bands you might really enjoy, particularly belketre. |
MrSputnik
12.06.10 | some of 1 is good. |

12.06.10 | lol thanks Hyperion. I might end up checking out those bands FIRST. Hell maybe I should rename this list to "Blackgaze?... Gimmie More!" |
ctaxxxx
12.06.10 | Update - If anyone even sees this, listen to the Dopamine track from #4. Just listened to it and I thought it was far better than the other bands on this list. |
Serenityinaz12
10.17.14 | some of these suggestions are laughable. Blut aus nord recommended for a dude looking for BLACKGAZE. Twilight? Wolves in the throne room? Paysafe d'hiver? LOL. |
