enh your prerogative i guess but azkaban was so obviously superior aesthetically and structurally imo, and it really was the first film to bring in some darkness (however benign) into the series. also, it was the first harry potter film worth giving a shit about.
i was born a few years too late to really grow up with harry potter, but it was an integral part of pop culture while i was in middle school, so i do feel very close to the series and i'm looking forward to seeing deathly hallows part 1 over the weekend. |

11.19.10 | I was pretty disappointed. It's not the worst movie of the series (that'd be pretty hard to do considering 2 and 4) but it was pretty meh, and I found the visuals a bit off-putting at times. When they go for comedy they strike fucking gold though, which is weird but appreciated. |

Captain North
11.19.10 | Truth. |
Nagrarok
11.19.10 | I was pretty much exactly the right age to follow the book series, so I still follow the films as well. I always thought they left too much out (5th book was the longest and the film was the shortest, wtf?), so the fact that this is split up is only good. The epilogue to Deathly Hallows is however the most atrocious thing Rowling has done to the books, and I'm not looking forward to see the ending on screen being that.
It's pretty useless to rank the films, in general they're an excellent adaptation. 1 and 2 were really for kids and had exactly the same feel, then 3 suddenly got a lot darker and so it went on. 5-7 are/will be very consistent in style because they were all directed by Yates, which is another good thing. |
Captain North
11.19.10 | Dude, the films have not been an excellent adaptation. 1 was a near perfect adaptation of the book, 2 was fucking hurrendous and the quality of cast/crew was appalling. 3 was great, 4 was an insult to film, 5 was okay, 6 was better and 7 was okay. |
JWT155
11.19.10 | Yea, the Goblet of Fire movie sucked cock. |
Nagrarok
11.19.10 | I can't see why you put 1 and 2 so far apart, both were extremely similar in tone and faithful to the book. I didn't mean to say all films are great on their own though, I agree 4 and 5 have their share of flaws (4 is probably the worst film), but my point is that if you look at the complete series they've made, they've done a great job adapting the books (I probably should have put it that way before). |
Captain North
11.19.10 | The quality in acting is massively different between 1 and 2 though (and poor acting on the part of the kids on 1 is more forgiveable as well).
I guess, yeah, they've done a decent job overall, but I reckon they would have done better if they'd waited until after all the books were done so they wouldn't have left random important stuff out like they have. That way they would have been harder hitting overall, rather than changing tone between them and shit. |
Jim
11.19.10 | yeah it was alright. too padded out though. |
JWT155
11.19.10 | Wish they kept with one director that way you'd get a single direction instead of different styles, which while it's cool to experiment imagine if Peter Jackson only directed Fellowship and then they went to someone else. That's one minor complaint of mine. |
Nagrarok
11.19.10 | 'I reckon they would have done better if they'd waited until after all the books were done so they wouldn't have left random important stuff out like they have. That way they would have been harder hitting overall, rather than changing tone between them and shit.'
I definitely agree with that, but the decision to make the films now was obvious: the books were hot, and money was to be made. Making them after all the books were out would have probably made for a better series, but while the tone feels a bit disjointed (1 and 2 go together, 3 and 4 stand apart, 5-7 are consistent), the fact that the cast stayed pretty much intact throughout all the films helps.
I've never noticed that much a difference between the acting of part 1 and 2, but it's a while since I've seen them, so. |
GnarlyShillelagh
11.19.10 | There was a very glaring LOTR parallel that I don't want to spoil for anyone, but did anyone catch it? I've read the book only once, when it was initially released, so I don't quite remember if it's merely the conception of the director or of the author... |
McCopper
11.19.10 | I saw it on the premiere yesterday.
Nice photography/soundtrack.They fucked up on the script again of course leaving some major things outside but then again they would need more than 3 hours to get it right.
The films are nice but the books are where it's at.They get better and better, it works like a puzzle, that's where all the fun is. |
Captain North
11.19.10 | I thought the photography was a bit off tbh, it made thinks seem oddly fake to me. |

liledman
11.20.10 | yeah but i really only had room for one fantasy series back in the day and HDM just did it all a lot better. and also i think that was around the time i stopped reading for a while so that contributed to not finishing the HP series. |
