Metal Bands That Have Nose-dived Into Obscurity

Metal Bands that were surprisingly good up until their recent releases...
1Bullet For My Valentine
Fever

There is no denying that upon their debut, BFMV hit a chord with many people, even if you had heard better. Anthemic choruses were a feature of their first two albums, and the band tried to create an even more epic sound in the process. All they created was an embarrasment. Matt Tuck managed to lower his vocal quality even further, some horrendous songs appeared (Alone, anyone?) This one was truly one for the fans only.
2Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare

This album showed us that Avenged Sevenfold were expecting a sympathy vote after the tragic death of "The Rev". And everyone wondered how the band would come back from such a blow. And the answer is badly. Their self titled 2007 effort wasn't great, but compared to this, it is gold. With the same mix of teenage garbage lyrics, and distinct lack of quality guitar playing from usually reliable Zacky and Synster, two of the most stupid names that I have ever heard, this album was a tragedy. Even Mike Portnoy couldn't help this band out.
3Dark Tranquillity
We Are The Void

Now, I am a huge DT fan. And they were seen as the last hope for the Gothenburg scene that had gradually lost its key acts, such as At The Gates and Jesper Stromblad from In Flames. The group usually most reliable created an album that simply stuck to the roots of its predecessor and sounded laboured and unimaginative. Finally breaking their strong run of albums with such a dissappoiting result was a huge letdown, and the apocalyptic chorus of "Iridium" was left all alone amongst pretty weak songs.
4Mushroomhead
Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children

The only reason this group got away with being so singly handedly pissed off at a band was that they sounded surprisingly good on their fifth album, XIII and Saviour Sorrow. The new album is so piss poor, it is the final closing on the door of a genre which has remained stagnant ever sonce 2004 with Slipknot's epic. Awful lyrical content, annoying crunch guitars and shocking drums means this is definatley a no go for all but the Cleveland dedicated.
5 Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage (II)

With "As daylight Dies", KSE created their most anthemic, heavy as balls and melody ridden record to date, so topping it was always going to be hard. The crash that followed however, was not. Repetetive guitar playing, poor drumming and a considerable down tuning of Howard Jones usually spine chilling screaming left a lot to be desired. many will argue this doesn't deserve to be on here, but compare it to other records of the genre and the groups previous work, and you will soon find out. For saying Adam Dutkiewicz felt this was their best release, his claim is laughable.
