Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Here is my list of the top 10 albums of 2009, ranked and in order.
1Manchester Orchestra
Mean Everything to Nothing

Better than their already excellent debut in every way, this album came closer to being a classic than any other release this year. Incredible from the first track to the last, it falls short of becoming a masterpiece ever so slightly in the last quarter. However, it is still by far the best and most consistent release I listened to in 2009, and one I see myself listening to for years and years to come. Do yourself a favor and experience this album. 4.75/5
Highlights: The whole album, from start to finish
2Thrice
Beggars

This was the next logical step in the evolution of Thrice, and just like every other album they've released since their debut, it succeeds very well at trying new things and executing them perfectly. Almost a culmination of everything they've tried thus far, and it works brilliantly. 4.5/5
Hightlights: The Weight, In Exile, The Great Exchange, Beggars
3Silversun Pickups
Swoon

These guys are often praised as a more modern-day Smashing Pumpkins, and they deserve such accolade. A truly phenomenal album from start to finish, lives up and in many ways surpasses their debut album Carnavas. They are able to display intense emotion through extreme density like no other band can. Highly recommended. 4.5/5
Highlights: The Royal We, Growing Old Is Getting Old, Panic Switch, Substitution
4Brand New
Daisy

Doesn't quite live up to the masterpiece that was The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, but it's still pretty fantastic in its own right. Very experimental, heavy on distortion, not for the casual or light listener! 4.0/5
Highlights: At the Bottom, You Stole, Daisy
5Closure in Moscow
First Temple

For fans of The Mars Volta, except much more structured, consistent, and easily accessible. The lyrics are also a lot less nonsensica. 4.0/5
Highlights: Kissing Cousins, Sweet#hart, Had to Put It in the Soil
6Pure Reason Revolution
Amor Vincit Omnia

This album takes a bit of time to truly appreciate, but once you do, its like nothing you've heard before. Incredibly unique and well structured, they mesh classical-sounding progressive rock with modern electronic in a way that?s totally new, but very effective. 4.0/5
Highlights: Les Malheurs, Deux ex Machina, AVO
7Mute Math
Armistice

Despite the fairly average reviews, I thought this album was a lot of fun. Doesn't lose your interest from start to finish, surprisingly consistent for a pop-rock release. Definitely on par with their excellent self-titled debut. 4.0/5
Highlights: Clipping, No Response, Burden
8Them Crooked Vultures
Them Crooked Vultures

For those who don't know, TCV is a super-group collaboration between Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Sounds exactly like you?d expect it to; a mix of the best of each of their respective bands put together. 4.0/5
Highlights: Mind Eraser No Chaser, New Fang, Gunman
9Devin Townsend Project
Addicted

Hevy Devy at his finest. Intense, chaotic, fantastic. 3.5/5 Highlights: Bend It Like Bender!, Supercrush!, Hyperdrive!
10Alexisonfire
Old Crows / Young Cardinals

Doesn't quite live up to their last two albums, but it's still a quality Alexisonfire release. Very few chances are taken on this one, therefore it can get a bit stale on repeated listens. Hoping for more innovation from the band, next time. 3.5/5
Highlights: Sons of Privilege, The Northern, Emerald Street
