After my rather superfluous "Top 25 of '09," I decided to narrow it down and reevaluate
some of my decisions. So here it is, WhereIsMyMind's TOP FIVE ALBUMS OF 2009. As if ya'll
care. | | 1 | | The Number Twelve Looks Like You Worse Than Alone
The pinnacle of their genre and the crown jewel of their discography, Worse Than Alone is an
exercise in how chaos can come together and form something beautiful in its own strange way.
Massively technical, inordinately chaotic, irresistibly catchy, and all around a classic release from one
of today's best grind outfits. | | 2 | | The Antlers Hospice
Bleak and dreary, an album of woes and misery, but executed so beautifully and perfectly that it
rises above every other indie release this year. And not only indie, but just about every other
release period. The pain and suffering on display here is almost tangible, and this is emotional
outpouring at its finest. | | 3 | | BATS Red In Tooth & Claw
The only album of 2009 that I can honestly say I cannot name one other similar sounding band. IF
one were to try to classify this, I'm thinking the most logical result would be Hardcore Technical Indie.
If that isn't enough to intrigue you, then I am at a loss, and pity you for missing out on this fantastic
release. | | 4 | | Scale the Summit Carving Desert Canyons
As a norm for me, I just don't enjoy instrumental music, but Scale the Summit come off as amazing to
me. Fluid and flowing like the rivers that carve desert canyons, the music on display here is subdued
when it needs to be, technical when it needs to be, and always fascinating. These guys are talented
musicians and never wank off for technicality's sake a la Dream Theater. The Great Plains is a
contender for song of the year for me. | | 5 | | Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect
All of Between The Buried And Me's prior releases have been nothing short of fantastic, but they all
had their own flaws that prevented them from classic status to me, such as Colors' frequent descent
into boringness, to Alaska's inconsistency. The Great Misdirect hit me all at once, on the very first
listen, and I knew this was BTBAM hitting their stride. Six sprawling tracks that are perfectly paced
and varied over the album's 50+ minute runtime, with two straightforward metalcore tracks, two
ambient buildups, one experimental composition, and one epic, TGM touches all of the bases and
leaves nothing but perfection. | |
Comatorium.
11.17.09 | I actually put some effort into this one, now why the fuck won't the artwork for Tooth & Claw show up!? | Athom
11.17.09 | none of this had any real staying power with me. plus i found 1 and 5 disappointing. | Comatorium.
11.17.09 | 5 i can understand but how could you find 1 disappointing? Its soooooo good. | Athom
11.17.09 | i never got into it. the whole thing just felt uninteresting to me. i've grown out of that scene-grind stuff. | Comatorium.
11.17.09 | The number Twelve is hardly scene-grind :/
See also: iwrestledabearonce, WhiteChapel, Dance Club Massacre, Daughters, Eatmewhileimhot!, Dr. Acula, War From A Harlot's Mouth.
Granted, I like a few of them, and most of them aren't even grind, but ask the tightpants wearing crowd, and they're as br00tal mehtul as it gets. | Athom
11.17.09 | daughters is in the same family as N12LY. i guess i look at it from the perspective of their fanbase and influences and them having an effeminate vocalist and sounding nothing like Terrorizer, Pig Destroyer or Brutal Truth. tbh i like daughters more. | YouAreMySilence
11.17.09 | 2'll be in my top 5. | Comatorium.
11.17.09 | But Daughters are so damn spastic and pure grind. The Number Twelve incorporate so many different things into their music. I dunno, i like them both a lot, but TNTLLU is my favorite band so maybe im just kissing their asses. | IRAI
11.17.09 | 3 n 4 are in my top 5 as well.
we're sputbuddies now. | lobby
11.17.09 | 2 and 4 are really good. 1 had a few good songs and the other two i haven't heard yet | Prophet178
11.17.09 | Dude listen to Native - Wrestling Moves and Q and Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep, they sound exactly like 3. | klap
11.17.09 | congrats on making a top-whatever list and actually describing your reasoning with coherent arguments. well done! even though i can't get into anything on here with the slight exception of 2 | BrahTheSunGod
11.17.09 | 4 is amazing, Great Plains is freaking sweet. The tapping at the end of it... mmm :) | Comatorium.
11.17.09 | Great Plains is tied with Swim To The Moon for song of the year for me.
The Garden's All Nighters is a verrrrrry close second, followed by Credulous, Credulous! | BigTuna
11.17.09 | 4 had absolutely no lasting power for me. It was like, "this is good!" and then I never wanted to listen to it again. I might keep trying. Check out Irepress- Sol Eye Sea I for an instrumental album similar to STS, but imo better. Also, fantastic reasoning behind why you liked each album. Makes you sound smart. Saying all that, 5's in my top 5 as well. | BigTuna
11.17.09 | So, re-listening to 4, and it's MUCH better than I originally thought. Here's to growers. | Comatorium.
11.17.09 | Yeah my first listen of 4 was whilst i was on a robotrip, so it just confused me. But a sober listen really showed it's brilliance. | Comatorium.
11.18.09 | For anyone who cares, i put up the list of my top songs for 09. | DiceMan
11.18.09 | 2 is so good. Like, seriously so good. | Comatorium.
11.18.09 | It really is. I like it just a tad more than For Emma. | Comatorium.
12.06.09 | i REALLY wish the damn artwork for BATS would show up... |
