5//2009

After my rather superfluous "Top 25 of '09," I decided to narrow it down and reevaluate some of my decisions. So here it is, WhereIsMyMind's TOP FIVE ALBUMS OF 2009. As if ya'll care.
1The Number Twelve Looks Like You
Worse Than Alone

The pinnacle of their genre and the crown jewel of their discography, Worse Than Alone is an
exercise in how chaos can come together and form something beautiful in its own strange way.
Massively technical, inordinately chaotic, irresistibly catchy, and all around a classic release from one
of today's best grind outfits.
2The Antlers
Hospice

Bleak and dreary, an album of woes and misery, but executed so beautifully and perfectly that it
rises above every other indie release this year. And not only indie, but just about every other
release period. The pain and suffering on display here is almost tangible, and this is emotional
outpouring at its finest.
3 BATS
Red In Tooth & Claw

The only album of 2009 that I can honestly say I cannot name one other similar sounding band. IF
one were to try to classify this, I'm thinking the most logical result would be Hardcore Technical Indie.
If that isn't enough to intrigue you, then I am at a loss, and pity you for missing out on this fantastic
release.
4Scale the Summit
Carving Desert Canyons

As a norm for me, I just don't enjoy instrumental music, but Scale the Summit come off as amazing to
me. Fluid and flowing like the rivers that carve desert canyons, the music on display here is subdued
when it needs to be, technical when it needs to be, and always fascinating. These guys are talented
musicians and never wank off for technicality's sake a la Dream Theater. The Great Plains is a
contender for song of the year for me.
5Between The Buried And Me
The Great Misdirect

All of Between The Buried And Me's prior releases have been nothing short of fantastic, but they all
had their own flaws that prevented them from classic status to me, such as Colors' frequent descent
into boringness, to Alaska's inconsistency. The Great Misdirect hit me all at once, on the very first
listen, and I knew this was BTBAM hitting their stride. Six sprawling tracks that are perfectly paced
and varied over the album's 50+ minute runtime, with two straightforward metalcore tracks, two
ambient buildups, one experimental composition, and one epic, TGM touches all of the bases and
leaves nothing but perfection.
