Recent Discoveries/Digs
Here is some of the stuff I have recently discovered or rediscovered and are digging again. |
1 | | Converge You Fail Me
I got my tickets for the Mastodon/Dethklok/Converge tour and realized I have only been listening to No Heroes and Jane Doe for a while now. So I dug back into my Converge catalog and remembered how much I love this and Petitioning the Empty Sky. |
2 | | Converge Petitioning the Empty Sky
Speaking of Petitioning the Empty Sky...this is very close to Jane Doe as my favorite Converge album. |
3 | | Converge When Forever Comes Crashing (Remastered)
My least favorite Converge record, but still a quality album. |
4 | | Blackmail Tempo Tempo
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this is. It is brit-rock, but with an early Radiohead-ish sound mixed with some Dinosaur Jr. in it. Good stuff. |
5 | | Dear Reader Replace Why With Funny
...Regina who? The female in this band sounds almost exactly like Ms. Spektor. If you like Far or any of her other works, you will definitely enjoy this. |
6 | | Justine Electra Soft Rock
Another female singer/songwriter I came across. More guitar oriented than piano driven, but still a great record. |
7 | | The Album Leaf Into the Blue Again
Post-rocky stuff with vocals. Didn't like it too much, but its not bad. |
8 | | Talk Talk Laughing Stock
While constructing my post-rock list I found myself listening to this a lot again. Essential listening. |
9 | | The Most Serene Republic ...And The Ever Expanding Universe
I don't remember how I came across this, but I listened to two songs of their myspace and figured it was good enough to get a full album. Those two songs were the only ones I ended up liking out of the entire album. Not good at all. |
10 | | Hammock Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo
Some more great post-rock. |
11 | | Sleepingdog Polar Life
() was my main album to sleep to for a while, but I figured I needed something new. This album filled that task more than wonderfully. |
12 | | This Will Destroy You Young Mountain
Contrary to the name, this isn't a hardcore band. Just some great post-rock. |
13 | | As Tall As Lions Into the Flood
After I saw these guys with RX Bandits I got all their stuff and became pretty obsessed with them. Their self-titled is incredibly good, and their other works are just as great. On the opposite end, I have grown a hatred for Dredg after seeing them live. They bored the fuck out of me. I was front and center pretty much falling asleep on the rail. I hope they saw me, went back to their tour bus, and were just like, damn, that kid wasn't feeling us, I think we should stop making music. |
14 | | As Tall As Lions Lafcadio
Beautiful album, I can't wait for "You Can't Take It With You". |
15 | | Marnie Stern This Is It and I Am It and You Are It...
Yes! I forget how I found this gem, but it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Its female fronted math-rock with Zach fucking Hill on the rhythm section. Marnie's voice and two handed finger tapping is nothing short of amazing, and of course Zach holds it down with his spastic beats on the drums. I like this more than any Hella album. Near-perfection. |
16 | | Marnie Stern In Advance of the Broken Arm
Not as good as her debut, but still amazing stuff. |
17 | | Zechs Marquise Our Delicate Nightmare
I didn't get to see these guys open for RX Bandits, but I'm kind of glad I didn't. This album is like what a full album of Frances the Mute ambiance would have been. I don't really know what to think of this. Its like post rock trying its hardest not to be post rock. |
18 | | Cut Copy In Ghost Colours
Catching up on some of the great records of 2008, this is really good. |
19 | | Vivian Girls Vivian Girls
All female shoegaze, I like this more than Wavves, but there is still very little noise-rock that I actually enjoy. |
20 | | Ponytail Ice Cream Spiritual
These guys were listed as one of Marnie's favorite bands, so I figured I would check them out. The music is great, but the "female" (seriously, take a look at the front"woman" of this band) singer is irritating as fuck. Check out their live performances for a good laugh. Particularly any of the Pitchfork sessions. |
21 | | Parhelia First Light
Post-rock mixed with some post-metal, good stuff. |
