| Artists I Discovered Through GH/RB
There are a lot of big names on this list, and that is because by "discovered" I mean grew to enjoy and appreciate more than I did before hearing their music in a game. | 1 | Silversun Pickups
If you've read any of my other lists, you'll know I'm crazy about this band. This wasn't the case the first time I heard the song Lazy Eye in Rock Band 2, in fact I barely gave it a second glance and it wasn't a song I chose to play very often. A while after I finished with RB2 I decided to buy Guitar Hero World Tour and found that the song was once again featured in the game. After playing it a few more times I grew to like it more and more and eventually decided to check out the band more in depth online. This was around the time Swoon was released and over the last couple of months, these guys have easily fallen into my list of top 5 bands, right now. | 2 | Rage Against the Machine
I'd heard of this band way before ever playing a song of theirs in a game, but I'd never actually had the chance to listen to one of their songs. Played Killing in the Name in Guitar Hero 2, thought it was good but not great enough to pursue. After playing Bulls on Parade in GH3, I was sold. Very catchy song that I needed to have. | 3 | Interpol
A friend of mine has raved about this band for the last few years, and would try to get me into them, but they never really grabbed me. PDA was featured on RB2 and Obstacle 1 on GH:WT. The songs eventually got stuck in my head and I decided to grab their album Turn on the Bright Lights (which is fantastic in my opinion) and have since obtained their other two releases, both of which are good but not great like their debut. | 4 | Black Sabbath
This is another case of "heard of the band for ages, never actually listened to their music". Heard War Pigs in GH2 and it was great, now I'm a big fan of all their Ozzy-era albums. | 5 | Coldplay
I'm pretty sure everyone has heard at least a song or two by this band, their singles tend to be monster hits for a short while after they're released. For some reason though, I'd never heard their song Shiver until playing it in GH:WT, which convinced me to give Parachutes a listen. A surprisingly solid album, unfortunately the quality of their music seems to have went downward since then. | 6 | Queens of the Stone Age
First heard No One Knows in GH2. Probably would've liked it if it wasn't such a hard song at the time, so it did nothing but cause me frustration, and in turn was overlooked. A couple of years later then Rock Band came out, had the chance to play Go with the Flow on drums, and it was killer. I'm a big fan of all their albums now, sans their self-titled debut. | 7 | Tenacious D
Always thought these guys were too silly to write actually good music. Played Master Exploder in Rock Band, had to get the album. Such a fun song to listen to when you're in the mood for that kind of thing. The rest is pretty average, but whatever. | 8 | Nirvana
The few songs I'd heard by Nirvana prior to Rock Band were Rape Me, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Lithium, all of which aren't bad but weren't enough to peak my interest. After playing In Bloom, I was pleasantly surprised, then came Drain You and About a Girl (Unplugged) and I was sold. | 9 | Mute Math
My brother actually downloaded the song Typical from the Rock Band Music Store on a whim, and it as great fun to play on drums. Gave their full self-titled album a download and it's very solid thoughout. | 10 | The Main Drag
Anyone who has heard of this band no doubt heard of them through A Jagged Gorgeous Winter being featured as a Rock Band bonus track. Very strange but catchy song, very weird but catchy album. | 11 | Priestess
Lay Down was featured in Guitar Hero 3, and was a very catchy and fun track to play. Did a little research and found out these guys were Canadian, so I had to pursue a little deeper. Hello Master is a fairly solid debut, going to have to wait until they release their second album to make a firm decision about this band, though. | 12 | Buckethead
Ahh, Jordan.. how long I tried to finish that damn song on expert in GH2, and when I finally managed to, I realized it was actually pretty good for what it was. Buckethead is pretty hit and miss, but the hits are worth the misses, in my opinion. | |
MassiveAttack
07.11.09 | Kinda sad you found these bands because of a video game. BUT, nonetheless you still did find these and I most if not all are great. Congratulations lol =) | ninjuice
07.11.09 | Coldplay haven't gone downhill since Parachutes :(
Mute Math are a bit underrated so its awesome RB got you into them. | Valdiuss
07.11.09 | MassiveAttack, if there's one thing you can't deny about this new fad that is music gaming, it's that it's a great way to find new bands and really listen to the songs more carefully than you might from hearing them on the radio or on tv or whatnot. Not as sad and probably a lot more common than you'd expect.
Ninjuice, A Rush of Blood to the Head was pretty solid, but X&Y is pretty bland, in my opinion. Viva la Vida is somewhere in between. | MassiveAttack
07.11.09 | I had a second sentence sir! | Fxxkit13
07.11.09 | Buckethead= guitar perfection heaven | Valdiuss
07.11.09 | MassiveAttack, yes you did and I thank you for the courtesy :P | ninjuice
07.11.09 | Viva La Vida is very easily their best album. | Mr_Coffee
07.11.09 | some great bands. I discovered dinosaur jr. and the smashing pumpkins through GH | MassiveAttack
07.11.09 | nah ninjuice I say Parachutes takes that even if I have them rated the same :) | Valdiuss
07.11.09 | Viva la Vida is pretty solid, it just doesn't have as many standout tracks, in my opinion, as Parachutes. Cemeteries of London is one of my favorite Coldplay songs, though. | KILL
07.11.09 | fucking gay | Valdiuss
07.11.09 | You're really cool. Congratulations :) | Masochist
07.11.09 | Mute Math is awesome.
The biggest band I discovered through GH was Muse. If I'd've waited one more release (or if I had played RB2), Dream Theater would also be on the list, but by the time "Panic Attack" appeared on RB2, I already had 5 albums by them.
But as a whole, video games in general are indispensable for me as far as discovering new music goes. | chaseguitar
07.12.09 | i'd add the fall of troy and the sleeping, both of which had bonus songs on gh3. funny, my friend and i were talking about this exact subject of bands we discovered through gh/rb. | robertsona
07.12.09 | 5's best album is viva la vida, no lie | Knott-
07.12.09 | coldplay are incredible. find me a downbeat piano song as good as amsterdam or trouble and i'll love you forever, but you won't be able to do it.
viva > para > ROB > X&Y |
