"Overrated" is relative to what the criteria are. Given that this is an insular sort of site, our responses are mainly going to be way too subjective since we're essentially calling out a bunch of bands that generally have a swell of popularity within very niche communities. Sleep Token is a good example of a band that is massively popular because fans overrate the quality of their music. But, like, Ulcerate? How are they overrated when even mainstream metal fans would never recognize that name?

Here's the thing: you recognize that a band like Cult of Luna is relatively niche but popular within their own genre. If the genre itself is so niche (which we can then assume has a limited pool of notable, talented bands) then it suggests that there is actual merit to the claim that Cult of Luna are not, in fact, overrated. It's why I argue that mass appeal needs to be a criteria otherwise we're just naming bands we personally dislike based off our "personal assessment" of their art. Beatles, Queen, Cream, Rush, etc. all exist within the macrocosm of "popular music" without reference to a particular genre and are more likely candidates in the overrated discussion.

I'm just of the perspective that these sorts of questions quickly become diluted if there's free reign to choose whatever you want. I certainly don't mean to police discussion, but I also think it's way more engaging talking about actual popular bands who, in hindsight, could be considered overrated rather than honing in on relatively obscure bands just to make a point. I think a separate "The Most Overrated Darlings of Sputnik" would entice others to really air their grievances.

Their popularity and influence is considered within the context of when the music was released. Since so many other bands have iterated and evolved on what their forefathers created (like The Doors, Black Sabbath, or The Beatles), credit is due for being progenitors of their genre. But that doesn't make them infallible or protected from criticism.
