07.17.26 | for a while I didn't have a setup to actually listen to one. Digital or shitty CD players can sound ok with some decent speakers/headphones, whereas there are so many moving parts to a decent record player setup that require maintenance
I now have that setup, so I do listen to my records, but I still think it's a pain in the butt most of the time I want to listen to music. |
AlkemestRedux
07.17.26 | This is true, it is a whole thing to get a set up. I guess I'm mainly thinking of the people who collect so many records that they could easily have picked up a player, or maybe even have one, but just don't.
I guess also I used to dj vinyl a bit and handling the actual record was always so much fun so changing sides/discs doesn't really bother me. |

07.17.26 | I’ve recently been thinning my collection since my parents brought them to me in person last month. Once I hit triple digits, I have so many albums I haven’t even opened. I’m trying to slim down to stuff I truly love now and sell records to friends or listeners who really will appreciate em. Even toyed with posting some here for sale. I think its also harder w the constant availability of digital music despite a different listening experience on vinyl |

07.17.26 | I'm the opposite, I listen to what I have but never buy anything new. |

07.17.26 | @jr I feel it. I have like 100+ dubstep records that I almost never listen to but keep around because I'm like 'what if I want to play a set' lol
And respectable, @art! |
climactic
07.17.26 | For me it's both. I definitely listen to my records but not on a super regular basis, it's a bit of an "occasion." To me it's easily the coolest physical medium for owning music, so that aspect itself is also part of it. I did partially switch back to CDs recently though so I can play them in the car |
AlkemestRedux
07.17.26 | I collect both as well and playing in the car is definitely a big consideration, and bonus! Plus they're half as expensive as most records now days. It can be hard to spend the extra $20 when I could get two CDs, although for albums I really love I'll fork over the extra cash. |
climactic
07.17.26 | Yeah exactly, it depends on the album for me which format I'll go with.
It is nice in the streaming age to have the 6CD changer in the car and just swap out the roster every few weeks. Whenever I use spotify i end up spending 15 minutes deciding what to listen to |

07.17.26 | i read something recently where like half of the people who buy vinyl records don’t have a turntable or record player. while i’m certainly not one to tell other people what to do with their money buying records (which have become quite pricey) and not listening to them is insane to me. |
Calc
07.18.26 | i only collect. I have the music digitally and I'm not going through a whole ritual to listen to it. |

07.18.26 | aunt/bro moved into the house and out of courtesy i just haven't been using my stereo. when some band i love does have some sort of repress showup and i feel like i owe them for the years of listening to their shit for free, i'll order but yeah the last couple albums i've picked up i haven't had a chance to spin yet :(. generally though my old record habits was going into random record stores and just searching for random shit/picking up whatever covers looked cool for the price than spinning them. found lots of cool 70s-80s stuff that way buut yeah just been less active |

07.18.26 | Exactly the same as Calc. There was a time I chased and spent a lot of time and money on auditory perfection with my setup. Now I just listen to my iPod and break out the vinyl on special occasions. Some of my records are just too valuable to even look at lol |

As someone who does this now(albeit I have an entire audio setup) it’s mostly to support the artist and to have something I can physically hold and touch. When you love an album so much owning it (I know you don’t really 😡 Sony 😡 ) digitally isn’t enough so you have to go buy a physical copy. I can listen to it on my mp3 whenever but I can’t touch it unless I get a real copy. I own tons of physical media and it’s kind of the same with all of it. I’ve seen blue velvet more times than I can count but I’ve still never cracked open my physical copy but it makes me happy that I own it and it’s actually mine and outside of a burglar no one can take it |

07.18.26 | There is a very nice ritual of being forced to sit down and enjoy the music. As such, I am pretty selective on what I grab, usually only stuff I would rank 4.0 or above. The packaging of vinyl is what makes it worth getting for me, whereas the cd just reminds me of the cheap shitty days with broken jewel cases. |
Calc
07.18.26 | ^^ i try and do this for my 4.5's and above but I'm not paying 90 bucks for stimming's alpe lusia sheesh |

07.18.26 | Oof the most uve ever considers was 200 what record was that pricey? |

07.18.26 | commented recently on another thread about vinyl but same as Reich and Calc just chased the dragon so hard on audio perfection something thats impossible and a never ending black hole for your money. Im now happy with my set up nothing super lavish but spent enough on it now given my circumstances. I wanted to be like 'WHO THE FK BUYS VINYL AND DOESNT LISTEN TO IT' but reality is its an addiction, I see a repress of something I love Ill play it a few times then itll sit there for months. I love sitting wih records but I wish id never started only really started a few years ago its cost me loads I could have started my own brothel now which was always the goal. |
