| | New Evil Dead ranking | | 7 | | Cannibal Corpse Butchered At Birth
Evil Dead Rise:
I was much higher on this movie when I first saw it in theaters. Alyssa Sutherland is still one of my all time favorite deadites, and the opening scene might just be the best opener in any Evil Dead film. However, upon rewatch I do wish they went a little bit further with their ideas. For example, the tattoo pen and the cheesegrater were fantastic and creative choices, but they simply didn't go as far as they could have especially for a film holding The Evil Dead title. On top of that, I'm not HUGE on the creature design at the end, and the kid characters annoy me more with each rewatch. Even so, this movie is absolutely awesome and I appreciate the different setting and Lee Cronin's style - you can really see his personality come through this film and I'm excited about his future projects. My least favorite Evil Dead movie and it's still between a 7.5/10 and 8/10. | | 6 | | Dying Fetus Wrong One to Fuck With
Army of Darkness:
Now this one would be higher if this genre was more of my preferred thing, but unfortunately I deeply miss the horror combined with the comedy here. This is the best that Ash has ever been (yes, even including Ash vs Evil Dead which is also fantastic) with some of the best one-liners in movie history. I am personally not particularly a fan of the portion with the mini-Ashes combined with a ton of other random scenes that don't really appear to make much sense. Other than that, this movie absolutely rules and it took a lot of balls to take this series in this direction - I just personally prefer horror. Also, this is a nitpick for a movie so silly but when did the deadites die so easily? So many scenes of Ash just shooting them with a shotgun and they die...they don't even seem to be deadites at all, even with the camp factor. | | 5 | | Ulcerate Cutting the Throat of God
Evil Dead Burn:
Holy shit, this one went hard. So hard in fact, that it had me looking away from the screen a couple of times. The atmosphere is incredibly bleak, cinematography and sound design are absolutely fantastic, and the kills (while not the bloodiest) are as brutal as I would ever want them to be. You can really tell the French extreme horror influence here, and it really fits with The Evil Dead franchise. Minor lore expansion and starting to connect to the other films was also a really nice surprise. I read some mixed reviews about the characters, but even though they weren't likeable it didn't really bother me for the story they were trying to tell. I came for a death metal movie, and that's what I got. However, this does not hit as hard as 2013 nor the original and there were some minor pacing issues. The next movie needs more than just "people in home or cabin become deadites" because we can't continue this forever. | | 4 | | Immolation Close to a World Below
Evil Dead 2013:
Total fucking brutality. This one goes HARD on the intensity and the blood. Love the character of Mia, everyone else is whatever but it doesn't really matter because of how good Mia is and we're not here for the characters per se, we're here for the grueling horror of Evil Dead. My complaints still remain from my last list :"I only have a few complaints with this one. One is that the book reading scene is a bit too weird for me and it seems even more ridiculous and stupid than usual. The dude literally skips past “LEAVE THIS BOOK ALONE” scribbled all over it, then he has the gall to trace over the book and read it outloud to no one for no reason." Also the fact that they didn't fully commit to Mia being a deadite and brought her back in some lazy, nonsensical way but she made such a great final girl that I've learned to overlook this. | | 3 | | Suffocation Pierced From Within
Ash vs Evil Dead:
This is everything I wanted from Army of Darkness. Upping the humor and the out of control slapstick, but NOT forgetting that this is a blood soaked grimy horror franchise as well. Every season had so many moments where I would just get so giddy (bringing back Henrietta and Cheryl, revisiting some classic sites, puppet Ash) and the new characters were actually fantastic additions to the universe. I STILL feel absolutely crushed that this was canceled, especially with that season 3 cliffhanger leading into what promised to be the most interesting season yet. However, I am so grateful that I lived to see this much Ash after half a lifetime of thinking Army was the end. Mostly perfect, but there were SOME episodes that were too much of a slog to justify and some of the gross out moments (specifically with poop) seemed like they went a tad too far into non-funny zone. | | 2 | | Morbid Angel Altars Of Madness
The Evil Dead:
This is the film that got me into horror when I was 12 years old and saw it in my friends basement without my parents knowledge. It's unbelievable that they managed to pull this off with the little resources they had. The atmosphere is crushingly bleak, the cinematography has the urgency of a creative young filmmaker with energy that is unparalleled. Is it cheesy in some places? Yeah, and that only adds to the charm instead of taking away. Absolutely brilliant, another one of my favorite movies of all time. And Cheryl STILL scares the ever loving shit out of me, moreso than any deadite in the entire franchise. | | 1 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
Evil Dead 2:
This is honestly probably my favorite movie of all time. Is it as technically as impressive as 2001: A Space Odyssey or Lawrence of Arabia? No. But it is by far the most fun horror film I have ever seen. It has the beginning of the best protagonist in any franchise imo, it steps up the creativity from Evil Dead 1, and the comedy is actually hilarious without taking away from the haunted house creepy atmosphere. I could watch this on repeat all day and never get bored. This and Terminator 2 are still at the top for me. The comedy, the horror, the camerawork, the makeup effects, the zaniness, all of it is just pure perfection. 10000000000000/10. Doesn't get better than this. | |

07.10.26 | The wait for Evil Dead Wrath is gonna suck now. | AlkemestRedux
07.10.26 | Man that mini review of Burn has me hyped. Glad to hear it's actually had to watch sometimes. | DarkSideOfLucca
07.10.26 | Let me know what you think when you see it, man! | AlkemestRedux
07.10.26 | Will do! | Larkinhill

Loooollll that dude was such a fucking idiot, it was maddening. He kinda redeemed himself towards the end though. A little. Even if he did technically cause it all to happen.

07.10.26 | unfortunately The Evil Dead is just plain old unscary if you watch it in the 21st century but it's very appreciable in a lot of other ways. Evil Dead 2 though is the juice. | Larkinhill
07.10.26 | Man I still prefer The Evil Dead to Evil Dead 2. I still lean towards scary horror more than horror comedy. 2013 is actually my favorite though. And this is coming from someone who grew up watching 80s horror movies, was born in 81 and been a horror junkie since I was a little kid. Just loved the brutal, oppressive, mean spirited, evil vibe of 2013 so much. Plus, having been through many a drug withdrawal, the idea of being stuck in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with that fucking shit happening and your friends just thinking you’re withdrawing and forcing you to stay…man. Fucking scary to the core.
Heroin withdrawal is already demonic enough. | Larkinhill
07.10.26 | Yeah the original was fairly scary back in the day (2 never really was), but not so much now. It does still retain that oppressive, isolated feel though, which adds to the atmosphere. | Obrotherartthou
07.10.26 | The new one is not that good. Im seeing a ton of mixed reception as well.
Rise>>> | Larkinhill
07.10.26 | I like Rise also. Funny but it actually has gotten the best reviews of the three newest versions. I still think 2013 is better though. And 2013 actually got the most mixed reviews of the three, critically at least. | Wildcardbitchesss
07.10.26 | Rise is literally my favorite and im seeing Burn tonight… tbh im very happy with the direction they’re taking this franchise. It’s a premise that could very easily get stale but grabbing a bunch of different international directors and having them put their own unique spin on it is a brilliant move.
Goated horror franchise and it’s not even close. | DarkSideOfLucca

07.11.26 | In the theater rn lucca anything below this comment is gonna be us talking SPOILERS
talk to ya in a couple of hours amigo | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | It was sick! But to me I think the biggest miss was that it was tackling some pretty heavy themes (generational trauma, spousal abuse) but doesn’t really do much with them, like both of those get a scene a piece and that’s about it, tho I will say the scene of Susan hugging her dementia riddled mom after she says her name was one of the strongest scenes in the movie, I also think the humor was pretty much perfect throughout, but again it feels slightly out of place considering the movie looks like it wants to be some grand statement about trauma and just doesn’t really end up saying anything. I’ll also say Alice is easily my least favorite of the three non Ash protagonists.
I’m also not entirely sure how to feel with the “world building” this movie is really leaning into. 2013 and Rise had callbacks but this one has a clear continuity. Like the first deadite in the film with the boiling lake (which was really clever and a very cool scene) is clearly the same one we saw in Rise. I have no idea if that’s the same actress but it’s obviously supposed to be the same character.
I’ll have to see it again but my ranking would go
6. The Evil Dead
5. Army of Darkness
4. Evil Dead Burn
3. Evil Dead 2013
2. Evil Dead 2
1. Evil Dead Rise
Still such an incredible franchise and im very excited for the future even if im a bit skeptical of the little cinematic universe it seems like they’re going for. Like, the post credits scene makes NO sense. Ellie was decapitated and chucked into a wood chipper, how tf is she there now??? Wrath evidently takes place in the 70’s and it would not shock me if the absentee grandfather character was a prominent part of it considering how much his “cult” was talked about in this one. | twlight
07.11.26 | My 34 year ass may actually go to the theater for this | DrGonzo1937
07.11.26 | Army of Darkness being that low should be a fucking crime, man. | twlight
07.11.26 | The soft reboot in 2013 was quite good. Although I didn’t get any comedy from it. I haven’t seen these two sequels.
An important aspect to me in this universe is a sense of humor. I kinda liked how 2013 put that out the wind and went full brutality. Great film | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | @gonzo
I love the movie lol, this is probably my favorite franchise behind Bond… what I should be getting roasted for is not having watched Ash Vs Evil Dead
@twilight
You should man!! A lot of my comment reads as complaining but it’s a great movie and a worthy addition to the franchise imo, it’s just a lot easier to point out a few things I didn’t care for rather than writing a whole essay on everything it does well. | twlight
07.11.26 | I gotta see it. Would you recommend watching Rise before I see this in theaters? | DrGonzo1937
07.11.26 | i loved ash v evil dead, but bizarrely i've never been able to watch it from start to finish. got halfway through season 3 a couple times and then irl got in the way. although, tbf, the story is a bit unfocused after season 1. still fun as hell though.
but toally agree twilight, i like the 2013 film (up until the last quarter of it), but this series is as much a comedy as a horror. it's actually a lot of the reason i checked out after the 2013 one, because ash is such a central, charismatic presence of it | twlight
07.11.26 | Yeah that original trilogy is impossible to beat.
I like that the new ones lean more into the scary aspect. But the directors need to understand the assignment and infuse that comedy
I do think it counts for something that this film actually makes me want to go to the theatre | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | Yes absolutely watch Rise first, Burn actually has direct ties to it and I think everybody would agree that both have a lot more humor than 2013. I wouldn’t go around calling them comedies, or even comedy-horror, but they for sure have some pretty hilarious moments. | twlight
07.11.26 | Will do. I think they are on hbo max now which I have… so I’ll watch Rise. I remember the trailer scaring me all the way back in 2023
Yeah, I probably described them incorrectly as being “horror-comedy”, because of course the first two films are disturbing, especially at the time they were released. I think they take a certain mind to understand the comedy aspect | Larkinhill
07.11.26 | The reason I prefer 2013 is specifically BECAUSE it went full brutality. I don’t mind some comedic elements I guess but there’s a reason Evil Dead 2 and Army are actually my two “least favorite” of the franchise. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them, I just prefer darker, scarier shit. | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | And also… I just think Rise is the best. It has the best all time deadite in it, im not at all exaggerating when I say that Alyssa Sutherland’s performance was Oscar worthy… I mean hell, if Amy Madigan can get one for Weapons, I really don’t see why saying the same thing about Alyssa is so outrageous to some people.
I do agree with people that say the third act falters just a little bit, there’s some monster design that, while good on paper, just doesn’t translate to the screen as well. I didn’t mind it at all really, but I do understand where people are coming from. Weirdly enough im seeing some similar complaints about Burn, but I really didn’t mind that one either.
But I really mean it when I say that I think that I liked Rise more than most, ill admit im very biased. | DrGonzo1937
07.11.26 | "The reason the 2013 is specifically BECAUSE it went full brutality"
full brutality until that goofy-ass ending where she loses her hand. that film falls apart the moment she gets revived. they should have kept it grounded throughout, or integrated more goofy stuff throughout | twlight
07.11.26 | So what seems to be the trajectory here with the franchise? Is in one offs loosely tied to the overall cannon or are they building towards something? | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | I don’t really think that it’s at all incorrect to call at least 2 comedy horror, the first one absolutely takes itself seriously though imo, I dunno I guess that’s why I never really minded 2013 being so dark, it’s got the same spirit as the first one to me at least.
Rise and Burn do more of their own thing. | twlight
07.11.26 | True dude true. I might have to watch Rise tonight | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | Without getting deep into spoilers, Wrath has been confirmed to take place in the 70’s and that just happens to line up pretty well with an unseen but mentioned character’s past in Burn. If I had to put money on it I’d say that it’s probably going to tie a lot of things together.
And Burn has a pretty insane post credits scene that ties it even closer to Rise… I really don’t know what to make of it so final answer to the “are they building toward something” question: maybe
It’s hard to know how seriously they’re taking themselves with that post credit scene… I mean 2013 had a fucking Ash post credit scene and we never got another Bruce Campbell movie. It might just be for shits and giggles but I dunno, I really feel like Wrath is gonna somehow tie at least Rise and Burn closer together, idk maybe they’ll even find a way to get 2013 and the originals in the mix somehow. I don’t know if it was ever confirmed that the trilogy and Ash Vs the Evil Dead are “canon”, the series never really took continuity seriously but to me it seems like they are now. | Larkinhill
07.11.26 | Yeah 2013 and the original also happen to be my favorite two of the franchise. Rise would be third for me.
About to watch Burn though. I feel it’ll land either in third place after the first, or 4th after Rise.
I actually am friends with a screenwriter/producer (mostly TV stuff) who dated Alyssa Sutherland years ago, before she had even gotten the role in Rise. But I agree, her performance was fantastic. | Larkinhill
07.11.26 | Yeah Wrath being set in the 70s, specifically before the events of the original of course. So, it’s officially a prequel. | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | @larkin
That’s cool as fuck, your friend is lucky too… homegirl is fine as hell lol | Wildcardbitchesss
07.11.26 | Side note and Some slight spoilers for Obsessions here: I’m very fucking confused how that film nearly got slapped with NC-17 for a particularly gory sequence but something similar in Burn happens and it’s WAY more graphic.
MPAA is dumb as shit |
