Evil Dead Rise:

I was much higher on this movie when I first saw it in theaters. Alyssa Sutherland is still one of my all time favorite deadites, and the opening scene might just be the best opener in any Evil Dead film. However, upon rewatch I do wish they went a little bit further with their ideas. For example, the tattoo pen and the cheesegrater were fantastic and creative choices, but they simply didn't go as far as they could have especially for a film holding The Evil Dead title. On top of that, I'm not HUGE on the creature design at the end, and the kid characters annoy me more with each rewatch. Even so, this movie is absolutely awesome and I appreciate the different setting and Lee Cronin's style - you can really see his personality come through this film and I'm excited about his future projects. My least favorite Evil Dead movie and it's still between a 7.5/10 and 8/10.

Army of Darkness:

Now this one would be higher if this genre was more of my preferred thing, but unfortunately I deeply miss the horror combined with the comedy here. This is the best that Ash has ever been (yes, even including Ash vs Evil Dead which is also fantastic) with some of the best one-liners in movie history. I am personally not particularly a fan of the portion with the mini-Ashes combined with a ton of other random scenes that don't really appear to make much sense. Other than that, this movie absolutely rules and it took a lot of balls to take this series in this direction - I just personally prefer horror. Also, this is a nitpick for a movie so silly but when did the deadites die so easily? So many scenes of Ash just shooting them with a shotgun and they die...they don't even seem to be deadites at all, even with the camp factor.

Evil Dead Burn:

Holy shit, this one went hard. So hard in fact, that it had me looking away from the screen a couple of times. The atmosphere is incredibly bleak, cinematography and sound design are absolutely fantastic, and the kills (while not the bloodiest) are as brutal as I would ever want them to be. You can really tell the French extreme horror influence here, and it really fits with The Evil Dead franchise. Minor lore expansion and starting to connect to the other films was also a really nice surprise. I read some mixed reviews about the characters, but even though they weren't likeable it didn't really bother me for the story they were trying to tell. I came for a death metal movie, and that's what I got. However, this does not hit as hard as 2013 nor the original and there were some minor pacing issues. The next movie needs more than just "people in home or cabin become deadites" because we can't continue this forever.

Evil Dead 2013:

Total fucking brutality. This one goes HARD on the intensity and the blood. Love the character of Mia, everyone else is whatever but it doesn't really matter because of how good Mia is and we're not here for the characters per se, we're here for the grueling horror of Evil Dead. My complaints still remain from my last list :"I only have a few complaints with this one. One is that the book reading scene is a bit too weird for me and it seems even more ridiculous and stupid than usual. The dude literally skips past “LEAVE THIS BOOK ALONE” scribbled all over it, then he has the gall to trace over the book and read it outloud to no one for no reason." Also the fact that they didn't fully commit to Mia being a deadite and brought her back in some lazy, nonsensical way but she made such a great final girl that I've learned to overlook this.

Ash vs Evil Dead:

This is everything I wanted from Army of Darkness. Upping the humor and the out of control slapstick, but NOT forgetting that this is a blood soaked grimy horror franchise as well. Every season had so many moments where I would just get so giddy (bringing back Henrietta and Cheryl, revisiting some classic sites, puppet Ash) and the new characters were actually fantastic additions to the universe. I STILL feel absolutely crushed that this was canceled, especially with that season 3 cliffhanger leading into what promised to be the most interesting season yet. However, I am so grateful that I lived to see this much Ash after half a lifetime of thinking Army was the end. Mostly perfect, but there were SOME episodes that were too much of a slog to justify and some of the gross out moments (specifically with poop) seemed like they went a tad too far into non-funny zone.

The Evil Dead:

This is the film that got me into horror when I was 12 years old and saw it in my friends basement without my parents knowledge. It's unbelievable that they managed to pull this off with the little resources they had. The atmosphere is crushingly bleak, the cinematography has the urgency of a creative young filmmaker with energy that is unparalleled. Is it cheesy in some places? Yeah, and that only adds to the charm instead of taking away. Absolutely brilliant, another one of my favorite movies of all time. And Cheryl STILL scares the ever loving shit out of me, moreso than any deadite in the entire franchise.

Evil Dead 2:

This is honestly probably my favorite movie of all time. Is it as technically as impressive as 2001: A Space Odyssey or Lawrence of Arabia? No. But it is by far the most fun horror film I have ever seen. It has the beginning of the best protagonist in any franchise imo, it steps up the creativity from Evil Dead 1, and the comedy is actually hilarious without taking away from the haunted house creepy atmosphere. I could watch this on repeat all day and never get bored. This and Terminator 2 are still at the top for me. The comedy, the horror, the camerawork, the makeup effects, the zaniness, all of it is just pure perfection. 10000000000000/10. Doesn't get better than this.
