05.22.26 | Adding more as I think of them but this'll be a fun little list |
Hawks
05.22.26 | NIIIIIIIICE!!!! |
Gyromania
05.22.26 | Cool list. Gotta get some Sigh and Emperor in here tho |
RunOfTheMill
05.22.26 | Mortuary Drape rules m/ got to see them live in 2019 I think |
arthropod
05.22.26 | Neat. My favourites would be Agalloch, Mgła and Thy Worshiper. I won’t speak of Morthar with just one album out, but he’s working on a new one so we’ll see.
I like how pretty "favourite" looks compared to "favorite". |
Rowhaus
05.22.26 | man Archgoat is such nasty fun! Haven't jammed that band in years m/ |
Sevengill
05.22.26 | Most of these are also in my favorite bands, especially the last 3. I just saw Rotting Christ live and it has me going down that rabbit hole now 👀 |
AlkemestRedux
05.22.26 | I need to give Emperor and symphonic black metal another chance honestly. I wrote off CoF for a long time too and ended up liking them.
And hell yeah! Where did you see them? I hope they have a US tour left in them at some point. I was actually emailing with, who I assume is, the frontman a while back asking about getting records shipped to the US, but it's so prohibitively expensive shipping from Italy that they're just not doing it. It's so frustrating seeing copies of killer albums on their Bandcamp but shipping is like $60 lol
Tariffs blow. |

05.22.26 | And hell yeah @arth, that Morthar album was awesome! Hoping for a new album soon.
@Row agreed they rip so hard! They just recorded a new album too that they're allegedly releasing this summer. I'm hoping for a North American tour too!
@Seven Blut is goated! And enjoy the Rotting Christ discography. What I especially love about them is how many different paths they've taken and they do them all so well. I think I'm gonna take today off because of this bum tooth, so maybe I'll relisten to some of their gothic albums. |

05.22.26 | Please remove Fate from this list my man. Much appreciated! |
Jmal00
05.22.26 | Oh and Celtic Frost tyty |
AlkemestRedux
05.22.26 | First wave black metal my guy! Some people don't include them but I think they earned their spots based on how influential they were. |
Jmal00
05.22.26 | First wave bm that isn’t bm. Always weirds me out when I see that. |
Orb
06.04.26 | You're missing the two best ones friend! Fen and Falls of Rauros! |
Hawks
06.04.26 | Mercyful Fate is most definitely an instrumental part in creating bm. |
budgie
06.04.26 | "I need to give Emperor and symphonic black metal another chance honestly. I wrote off CoF for a long time too and ended up liking them.
if you do go at symphonic black metal again you gotta jam nexus polaris. it's the rust in peace of black metal |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | @hawks and Maiden was instrumental in the development of thrash yet you don’t see Maiden in any top thrash lists? Fate, Venom and Frost have none of the defining characteristics of BM. Confuses me to no end why people insist on incorrectly labeling them. |
Hawks
06.04.26 | I completely disagree with that. Back when these bands came out, that WAS black metal. It wasn't until Bathory came along that we got the version of bm that we know and love. Then of course bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone, etc that added the cold, raw edge. At least thats my take on it. |

listen to this track (1980) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaH4F6j3HGs
then this track (1984) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsKPsybTs7E
then this track (1994) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ar2yhwpnSo
they all share the same dna. just feel out the riffing style and the drums |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | We don’t live in 1984 anymore tho. We have the privilege of living in 2026 with infinite information. We as intelligent humans can say yeah maybe back in the 80s Slayer was considered satanic Black Death metal but now we have clear definitions and expectations from genres. Proto BM is just very unique classic metal that’s a lot closer to Priest than Inquisition. |
Hawks
06.04.26 | I mean, I definitely don't disagree with that notion. I still disagree with your overall argument though and that's ok lol. |
gabba
06.04.26 | Priest vs. Inquisition is like cause vs. effect. |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | I just want to see a better world for my children. Too long have we accepted the status of being told genres without asking why. Don’t even get me started on USPM. |
budgie
06.04.26 | everyone else understands though |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | Some guy on the street who has never heard metal until yesterday listens to Nightside Eclipse. If you try to tell him with a straight face that Don’t break the oath is the same music as that he’d prob never respect you again. Because you are lying to him |
ToSmokMuzyki
06.04.26 | holy moses had the first vox, venom fully fleshed out the concept, bathory completed the genre |
Hawks
06.04.26 | For once I agree with Smok. |
ToSmokMuzyki
06.04.26 | as far as pre bathory goes i dont count it as bm but on the other hand i have hellhammer sorted as bm in my coll cuz its closest |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | If venom is bm then Motörhead is also bm. And fuck it so is maiden. Number of the beast was pretty satanic man. And kiss is also bm bc they painted their faces. Actually come to think of it… the Beatles were also Proto Proto bm because they inspired Motörhead who inspired venom. |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | I hope we see the issue here. |
Jmal00
06.04.26 | And while I’m ranting I’ll also say that why is BM the only genre that gets this treatment. If our good buddy Alk dropped his favorite death metal bands ever and had slayer on that list he’d get crucified despite the fact that slayer was just as influential to dm as venom was to bm |
budgie
06.04.26 | everything youre saying is stupid |
Veldin
06.04.26 | Down in the weeds where the black metal once was |
ToSmokMuzyki
06.04.26 | in one of death's earliest shows kam lee calls venom one of the first death metal bands so venom is actually dm |
Zac124
06.04.26 | Need to check One of Nine. Love me some Middle Earth themed black metal |
