05.04.26 | I think I've seen one of these movies in this list before. 13, 21 and 22 are the ones I like the most. "Verhoeven fucking sucks?" hah, that's a shame.
Blade Runner (Final Cut), Robocop 1, Men in Black 1, Starship Troopers and District 9 are the ones I really like from live action sci-fi movies.
I haven't seen any sci-fi movies I'm so enthused in recent years, but James Cameron is still around with his Avatar series. |

05.04.26 | No tolerance for verhoven slander, I'd put RoboCop and total recall over like 90% of these lol
But you probably oughtta check out 12 monkeys if you haven't, terry gilliams kind of uneven but that's a decent 90s gem. Might also want to check out Bigelow's strange days and the crow guys dark city(actually think thats Alex poy but not sure). Also gotta give the classics a shout-out like 2001 solaris and thx |

05.04.26 | Prometheus is fun as hell with a great sense of scale. This list is missing some good ones like Arrival and Annihilation. |
CaliggyJack
05.04.26 | Arrival and Annihilation are both great. 12 Monkeys is crazy good. The only good Verhoeven film is Hollow Man. |
BAT
05.04.26 | "The only good Verhoeven film is Hollow Man."
'Shame.' but nah if you haven't done your due diligence likee dude made flesh+blood, the 4th man, turkish delight, etc. he basically broke out rutger hauer, if you like weirdo 70s eurostuff his pre-robocop days are great. robocop - total - basic instinct's a pretty gnarly run, showgirls iss certainly a movie, hollow mans legit my least favorite. i remember renting it with my mom when i was like 10 and her just being like 'who wrote this bullshit,' i'd never seen her hate a movie more lol. granted i have a soft spot for it and don't outright hate it, buuuuut your sleepin on verhoeven |

05.04.26 | wait knowing that batshit nic cage movie? |
CaliggyJack
05.04.26 | @Knowong the *brilliant nic cage movie.
@Bat is his pre-Hollywood stuff also chock full of his obnoxious force fed attempts at "satire"? If so I'll pass |
BAT
05.04.26 | Nah really his prior movies have almost nothing in common with his Hollywood stuff other than they're fairly transgressive for their eras. Basic instincts like the closest to his old stuff and even that's kinda toned down/sterilized by comparison. It's weird scifi is what he's known for now cause it's something he just kinda fell into from major studios. Even his post Hollywood stuff is drastically different, there's sociopolitical aspects to his dutch stuff but it's not cartoonish a la the played up aspects of like starship. |
CaliggyJack
05.04.26 | Huh... okay I'll give it a shot. Basic Instinct might be a good film, but it will be forever tarnished by what Verhoeven did to Sharon Stone. Seriously, fuck him for that.
Don't even get me started on Starship... one of the greatest Sci Fi novels ever written and that deluded jackass ruined it. |
