JoyfulPlatypus 05.01.26	I just can't do jump scare heavy horror movies in general anymore. Loved them when I was a teenager but now jump scares just piss me off lol Only horror movies I like are the creepy/unsettling ones that focus more on atmosphere.

Trebor. 05.01.26	Jump scare horror definitely has a ceiling. For me it's a 3.5/5 which is a movie like the first Conjuring, it's the best of a very limited genre. Sort of like how no nu-metal album can be above a 3.5 lol

gabba 05.01.26	Jump scares suck, the less the better. I like those scenes where you know from the start that something terrible is going to happen, and then you hope it won’t, but it would, and is even worse than you expected. Like when the rottweilers approach the guys in the cemetery in Omen.

Larkinhill 05.01.26	Worst to best Annabelle The Curse of La llarona The Nun II The Conjuring 3 The Conjuring 4 The Nun Annabelle Comes Home The Conjuring II Annabelle The Conjuring I love horror movies and The first Conjuring is a modern classic/masterpiece, Annabelle Creation was a huge improvement on the first Annabelle and pretty fucking scary, but there’s a drop-off after those two. An even bigger drop-off after Annabelle Comes Home.
Larkinhill 05.01.26	Has everyone really watched Annabelle Creation? It’s getting shockingly underrated here. While the pretty lame conjuring 3 and 4 (imo) are rated surprisingly high in general. They were so dull. At least 4 was an improvement on zzzz…3. 2 wasn’t bad, but the script was really overstuffed and unfocused.still had good, well telegraphed scares.

budgie 05.01.26	it is cool when a film has like a wide horror lore going on in it and a monster doesnt necessarily get a lot of screentime just a brief nod to sort of indicate the universe has some spooky depth
Larkinhill 05.01.26	Agreed re jump scares vs creepy/atmospheric. The latter is always better and more interesting, shit like some Lynch movies, Jacob’s Ladder, The Exorcist etc The Conjuring is an example of jump scares done right—usually they suck but Wan is a master at it. A good, well constructed, deliberately paced jump scare with an unsettling build-up can kill as well.
Larkinhill 05.01.26	The nun painting was Conjuring 2. Conjuring 3 was the courtroom drama. It was quite lame. First 30 mins or so were decent, but once it got to the courtroom shit, it became an uninteresting, tedious plod. The Exorcism of Emily Rose already played that whole angle anyway so Conjuring 3 was old hat and stale feeling. And Emily Rose is an example of exorcism/possession movie meets courtroom drama/procedural done right.

I know some hate that movie, but I saw midnight showing a few nights before it came out with two girls, and we all ate some acid beforehand. It was fucking scary as shit lol. We knew it was a mockumentary and not real, but it still worked. The girls started having a bad trip afterwards when we stopped by an elementary school bench to smoke some hash lol. And they only ate one head each! I had two or three. To be fair, it was pretty strong good acid. They were gel tabs.

Doctor Sleep was good too (albeit not great). The Haunting of Hill House is probably his masterpiece at this point imo. Shit was so good. Gerald’s Game and Midnight Mass are fucking great too, but I also like hush, oculus, ouija 2 and absentia.
Aerisavion 05.02.26	“Doctor Sleep was good too (albeit not great).” I really enjoy both books + Kubrick’s movie and honestly I absolutely loved Doctor Sleep (directors cut, never saw the shorter theatrical version). There were some moments in that film that really got me.
Larkinhill 05.02.26	I saw it in theaters then bought the directors cut on 4k and yeah, DC is definitely superior.
