04.09.26 | Man I’m stoked to see RE5 at number 1. I’ve recently played through it 3 times with my sis and we’ve both had a blast. We’re now going through 6 and I unfortunately can’t say as much. Beat Village not too long ago and it was wayy easier than I was expecting as I remember having a way harder time with 7 when it came out. Can’t wait to get around to getting through the 2 and 4 remakes. GOAT series |

04.09.26 | 2 an 4 remakes are good but 4 Remake is absolutely 🐐 ed
5 is a masterpiece |
Gyromania
04.09.26 | Is your rating of 5 so high because it has the best mercs in the franchise? That def inflates my rating for it a bit. OG 3 is indeed incredible; I just went through it recently for the first time in a long time, and it holds up amazingly well. Remake and 7 are the benchmarks for me for actual survival horror, but RE has been a lot more than just straight up survival horror for decades now.
About to start on my replay of 8, but for me it's been the weakest entry in the series since the day I played it. Hoping I can enjoy it more this time around. I figured maybe the 3rd person pov makes combat more enjoyable/makes enemies more kiteable. Although I've heard from others that you can tell the game was noticeably not designed with 3rd person in mind. Tbf, when I went back to 7 a week ago, I messed with some of the settings and found that turning aim acceleration off made the game feel way smoother and faster, so maybe that's the trick for 8 as well. |

04.09.26 | My only problem with 7 is the ship level suuuuuuuuucks
Also I just love everything about 5, like, everything. |
Gyromania
04.09.26 | 5's campaign is around a 7/10 for me, but mercs is a hard 10/10 experience. If I'm playing coop, I'd bump my main campaign rating to an 8. It's a good time, but I have issues with the story and the sillyness goes a little too far for my liking. I'm excited to check out the dlcs when I go back to it soon. I never played them before and I heard there's a Spencer-Mansion dlc that's great.
I love the ship level in 7. The mines are the lame part in that game, if any, and they're over so fast. Never got the hate for the ship. Creepy atmosphere, enjoyable level design, tense survival horror sections. Only truly weak thing about it is it's not the Baker estate/Evelyn is kind of cringe. |

04.09.26 | Copy pasting my tiers from the other thread
1: og 1, 2, 4, remake, 3, rem4ke
2: cv, r2make, re7, village, rem4ke seperate ways
3: re5, og 1 dualshock arranged, outbreak, re6, r3make, rev2
4: revelations, dead aim, zero, 7 dlc, ocr, mercenaries 3ds[haven't played this but played re5m and assume its just a cutdown vers], survivor, gaiden
5: re:resistance, reverse, and umbrella corps.
Zero being above og 1/4 is what I take the most issue with. I feel like if they finished the n64 version it would've been a better game, as-is it feels like they tried to retool it closer to the remake annnnd as a result it isn't as good as og trilogy or remake. Also feels like a waste of effort revamping it considering there's almost zero actual connection to remake in terms of story/chars. The cutscenes alone are kind of an indicator of the various stages of dev; half of them look like re2 while the in game stuff likes leagues ahead even on the GameCube vers. It also has the worst soundtrack of the fixed angle games, they go for an ambiance approach and it just isn't memorable. Most recognizable bit is the wind music whenever the swampy guys showed up. I still love the game, I just think it's the weakest fixed angle entry. Top notch background design tho one of the best looking games in the series. |

04.09.26 | 5 and 6 are very bad and make me feel very bad indeed. Code Veronica and Zero are meh. Every other numbered title is other great or fantastic or classic. Rev 1 is really good and Rev 2 is doo doo
4 remake is way worse than the original and I don't get why anyone thinks otherwise |
Gyromania
04.09.26 | 5 and 6 are only bad insofar as their story and dialogie is loltier. The actual mechanics and tech in those games (more so 6) gives them a decently high skill ceiling and they become quite a lot of fun to master. |
BAT
04.09.26 | 6 is a game where the more i play it the more i respect it, on initial impressions it's jank but once you've learned the ins/outs of the combat it's actually pretty expansive. it's the one pre-re:engine game i don't think really needs a remake cause it's not too far off from modern shooters. definitely a better ng+ game tho, feel like it'd probably have a better reception if it was shorter cause you don't feel the benefits of replaying as quickly as any of the other games. |

04.09.26 | knooo your kidding around buuuuut, third person games in general were built off of tank controls, tomb raider being one of the most influential games of all time. and yeah going back to my re6 is modern: doesn't have tank controls like 4/5. i still feel like deadspace 2 nailed the formula quicker than re would with the remakes. |
CaliggyJack
04.09.26 | Oh I'm not kidding. Tank controls is why the OG RE4 irritates me so much. I hate it. Also I cant stan the old TR games either lmao |
Gameofmetal
04.09.26 | Resi 6 is truly an awful video game and the 3make has become such a performative whipping boy to the point that people lie about how long it is to emphasize their fury at the cut content. They're straight face saying it's a 3-4 hour game instead of 7-9 (with replay value), which is only a little beneath Resident Evil standard length. |
BAT
04.09.26 | i've put about 35 hours into r3make[just on steam not counting my ps4 saves], basically did all challenges/achievements/etc. the last time i played it i beat it in an hour twenty, it's short and honestly all the stuff i dislike about re6 is present in r3make. it's worth the 10 bucks or so it goes on sale for every season but yeah i'd been pissed if i bought it new coming off re2, seperate ways is longer lol. i like both games a bunch but to say neither have earned their reputation is a bit much. really the majority of the series is 7+/10 for me but i understand why most rate the og like #12 when it's my favorite. but yeah i kinda dig re3r now because it's a game i can beat in like a sitting, the og trilogy has the same appeal for me hence why i play thru them annually.
also calligy: just out of curosity what elevates re5 for you to top spot, personally i feel like it controls identically to re4 and on release felt like a more streamlined version. i love re4 so obviously re5's always a ton of fun to play and i have great memories of co-oping it with friends/family over the years. |
Gameofmetal
04.09.26 | No come on, this is what I'm talking about. You're describing its length as someone intentionally speedrunning it. Separate Ways is shorter, I just played both the last couple weeks. Separate Ways is like 5 hours on the upper end, 3make is average 8. I would like more of it! But it's more or less the same length as Resident Evil 1.
Also remember the in-game completion timer is wildly incorrect, like comically so. |
BAT
04.09.26 | my first run of re3 was roughly 6 hours thirty minutes, a saturday and sunday night. my steam count on re2r is at 70 hours and i've still not 100%'d it, but in your defense i did beat it in an hour forty using the rocket launcher...but that was just one campaign. most of my personal replay 'value' for re2/re3 comes from the challenge runs, getting s rank on everything. it's short: run to station get firehose turn on generator map the train goto train nem fight carlos rcpd dog nem fight hospital lab back to back nem fights. i don't have a problem with that personally, it's a great game but not a great remake. why it places lower in my favorability is the same reasons as re6: lots of the campaign is control being stripped away from you and being stuck to dodging left or right, it throws you into compromised positions everytime you hit a cutscene regardless of where you enter from. the only thing that edges re6 above it for me is it's just more ambitious, it gets bonus points for being slightly more interesting in the grand scheme of things.
i will say people complaining about any of the resident evil games being short is kind of a moot point though, like i still see people bitching about requiem being 10 hours and 70 bucks and it's just likeee the entire series is like that lol. also saw people doing it for silent hill f and that game took me like 23 hours first go. but yeah i've streamed beating like all the classic re games/remakes in one sitting[not back to back*], i do think re3r is the least complicated to run through. that fucking final nemesis fight on inferno took me 4 hours of retrying alone, but if all goes right it's like a 2 minute bit taking place in a single room. i guess my stance is: r3make and 6 are both overhated, but i understand where people are coming from. but yeah don't think i'm singling out r3r cause i could complain just as much about re2r despite it being a more faithful remake, one of the main reasons i held off on buying it was because i'd seen my friends stream it and i could tell them where to go and what items they needed based on how much i'd played the original. i paid like 15 for a bundle of both and have gotten way more than my moneys worth. |
Gameofmetal
04.09.26 | Yeah they're designed to be really replayable so I'm basically never bothered by length. If anything I think 4make is a tad long. |

1. No tank controls
2. Setting is really cool and novel
3. Co-Op is sick
4. Does a good job of delving into how companies in Western countries will use Africa as a dumping ground for their other Insidious shit that they wouldn't get away with at home.
5. Sheva Alomar
6. Prequel DLC is great
7. Mercenaries mode
8. Mad Max Chris Costume

04.10.26 | I do think RE5 is underrated, it's quite fun in co-op. But would put it pretty low in my ranking. |
BAT
04.10.26 | Re5s got tank controls though, are you just referring to aiming with the right stick cause you can set that in most versions of re4. You can't move and shoot in re5, at least you couldn't on the ps3 only times I played it controlled basically identically to re4 lol
Edit: don't play re4 on a mouse is sacrelig. Also you should try the Wii version of 4 and if you dig that get the move setup for ps3 cause it's basically Wii controls on re5 |
Gameofmetal
04.10.26 | Does it have to do with the directional slow pivot on the aim as opposed to a reactive mouse control, even though you still can't move? |
CaliggyJack
04.10.26 | Tank controls are where you can't free look. In OG RE1, 2, 3, CV, and 4 you can only turn and then move, you can't run and turn. |
BAT
04.10.26 | Re6 does that but my experience with re5 is exactly what your describing, I admittedly haven't played any of the modern/PC vers but yeah it's camera look worked the same as re4 for me and so did turning, you can actually look around on re4 but it's just not on the same stick as aiming so it's only useful when walking. I might be tripping but yeah re6 def isn't tank, I don't remember any strafing in 5 |
CaliggyJack
04.10.26 | I have versions of RE5 on PC, Switch, and Playstation 4, in all versions I can move and turn at the same time. I don't mind having to stop to shoot, I just want to turn and move. |
BAT
04.10.26 | Yeah I looked it up the modern versions have extra control options, try messing around with the control settings on the modern 4 ports you might find one that suits you bit more, but you had me feeling a mandella effect for a min. Personally when I got the ps4 vers of 4 I had to change the controls back to match PS2s cause it just felt off to my muscle memory
But yeah re5s a lot of fun, my experience might've been dampened playing it day 1 coming off of years of grinding 4 |
CaliggyJack
04.10.26 | Oh shit did RE5 used to play like RE4?
Thank God I didn't play it back in the day |
BAT
04.10.26 | Conversely I skipped og release 6, I feel like I probably wouldve hated that game if it was like a choppy 18fps |

As someone who's extremely neurotic about seeing and doing everything in most games I play, and usually completing games with far higher avg playtimes than most (my first Elden Ring run clocked in at 187 hours lol), 3make took me 6 hours and 30 mins to roll credits. It is an incredibly short game and a disappointment in that regard... but I also remember it being solid fun. It's probably easier to appreciate for those who have never played the original. I'm excited to go back to it and get the plat trophy, but I wish they kept that one in the oven a bit longer. |

04.10.26 | One of my favorite conversations I've had on Twitter was a couple years ago a guy said that RE5 was racist because it had the tribal dressed African's speaking "ooga booga" language. When I pointed out that they were actually speaking accurate Swahili and that calling it "ooga booga" language was incredibly racist, he blocked me.
I still laugh about it to this day. |

04.10.26 | 3 was really fun to blast through but it felt sparse compared to 2. 4 remaster is incredible I have over 100 hours in that one haha. |

LOL. I've heard other people make comments about it being racist, which is just absurd. I just assume it's ragebait |
BAT
04.10.26 | i am weirded out by people claiming it's un-remakable because of it's racial aspects, personally none of my friends ever brought it up and the only time you'd hear about it would be obvious grifter journalists looking for clicks. it's definitely worth discussion, but like when you think of classic re it's basically japanese people making up americans/towns based on movies they'd watched. it can be seen as ignorant stereotyping, but at no point do i feel like they're intentionally mocking any culture. is some of it a bad look though: i mean i'd assume some of the devs on 5 had seen like cannibal holocaust and took some notes from that lol.
but yeah i really want to play re5 with re4rs gameplay mechanics, i don't think it's problematic enough to be worth shying away from and i think has a lot of room for improving its lore/character development. plus leons my guy but a full re:engine chris campaign would be cooler than the little glimpses he appears in 7/8 |
Gameofmetal
04.10.26 | RE5 is absolutely really clumsy in a racial analysis, it doesn't really totally hold up to scrutiny but you can also curiously read some anti-colonialist commentary at the same time. |

04.10.26 | Sheva: Wouldn't you rather be back in America than a place like this?
Chris: Not necessarily. Some people might think America has its own dark side.
Sheva: That doesn't sound very patriotic.
Chris: I'm just a realist. It's a capitalist society. Not everyone is cut out for that kind of constant pressure.
Chris: Sure, there are opportunities to be had, but at what price? You gain, someone else loses.
Sheva: You don't sound like any American I've ever met.
Chris: That's the great thing about us Americans, we're all different. |
