| Morbid Angel Objective True Ranking
been in a morbid kick recently and after years of listening I’ve settled on the true objective ranking of all MA albums. check it. | | 9 | | Morbid Angel Illud Divinum Insanus
can’t really say anything about this that hasn’t already been said. not a real album. doesn’t exist. | | 8 | | Morbid Angel Kingdoms Disdained
not last by virtue of not being illud but also basically not a real album. it’s no secret that Trey has gone off the deep end and is a hopeless alcoholic, and as a result this record just has nothing worth revisiting. not offensive, but definitely not worth anyone’s time. | | 7 | | Morbid Angel Domination
the last real morbid angel album, and unfortunately not a good one. I really believe this was the product of a band in turmoil who had two disparate parts pulling in different directions, and the result is a flat, directionless groove death album that had basically none of the members really at their best. Vincent’s vocals are at their most annoying and shouty, Erik rutan’s riffs and songs are just as bad as everything he did with hate eternal (which sucks), and you can barely hear Pete doing anything because the production is so flat and lifeless. a bad record, and one that ultimately split the band, but worth a listen if you’re a real MA head at least one time through. | | 6 | | Morbid Angel Gateways to Annihilation
the last “good” morbid angel album, but also the least good of the good ones. Pete has always had a fondness for drum triggers and new drum technology, but they went way overboard with this one. it’s basically entirely an ekit at this point and it sounds like shit. there are good riffs to be had but a lot of sections go on way too long and the songwriting just isn’t up to the standards of the previous outing. good, but not great. | | 5 | | Morbid Angel Heretic
the most unfairly maligned death metal record of all time probably. I still genuinely don’t understand what the problem is here, other than all the synth tracks, but I genuinely like those and think they add to the weird vibe of the album. the riffs are classic morbid angel and the drums are classic Pete Sandoval. What more could you want? The production isn’t the best in their catalogue, but I do dig the raw and razor like quality to it. great record in serious need of a critical reevaluation. | | 4 | | Morbid Angel Altars of Madness
make no mistake, this record rules. it’s just, unfortunately, not as good as 3 other records the band would make. undoubtedly a classic that changed the way death metal was played across the board, it suffers a bit from sounding too much like a transitional thrash record. Trey was still finding his sweet spot for songwriting and there are several parts throughout the record that just sound kind of goofy, but the riffs and musicianship are undeniable. a classic overshadowed slightly by 3 other classics by the same hands. | | 3 | | Morbid Angel Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
after the gigantic disappointment of domination, Vincent left the band and it was up to trey and Pete to rejuvenate their sound. I’ve softened my stance in Dave Vincent as a person over the years, but this album made it clear that the true keys to the morbid angel sound were Trey and Pete. their most psychedelic and acid drenched record. not really a return to form as much as another iteration of the classic morbid angel sound. | | 2 | | Morbid Angel Blessed Are the Sick
after altars the band decided to slow things down and really focus on an atmosphere and ancient biblical mystical vibe. better than the debut in basically all categories other than the production (which isn’t bad, it’s just not the best either). but they still had more to do after this with covenant. also a really triumph that after the massive success of altars, they basically decided to make the album they wanted artistically instead of caving to hype or trends. | | 1 | | Morbid Angel Covenant
The band firing on all cylinders. Pete’s best drumming, Vincent’s best vocals, the best guitar playing on a death metal album probably ever, and the best production they ever had. Not a single ounce of fat, just a pure riff-fest from start to finish. their best and easily a top 5 death metal album of all time. | |
