Some Ukrainian movies to watch

These are some good Ukrainian movies available online with English subtitles (Links provided in the descriptions, mostly Netflix, a couple of times Ukrainian streaming services). I don't know if anyone remembers about Ukraine, but we are still fighting, still holding on. The list is albums that I'm planning to review after I finish my current review queue and in between my bigger projects such as reviewing the whole Peter Murphy discography. As always, you're welcome to do a review for any item on the list in my stead! Especially the second half.
1Angra
Secret Garden

Dovbush (2023, Ukr “Довбуш”) – A historical movie about Ukrainian guerilla movement (opryshkys) from the XIX century and its Robin Hood-type leader. The best thing about this specimen of Ukrainian cinema is that it can be enjoyed on two levels, as a historical drama and as an action movie. Available with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81739901?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=81740374
2Dirkschneider and the Old Gang
Babylon

Homeward (2019, Crimean Tatar: Evge, Ukrainian: «Додому», romanized: Dodomu) – this was Ukrainian Oscar submission for 2019, but despite that it’s an excellent road movie focused on inter-generational conflict, and also a good insight into Crimean Tatar culture. Available with English subtitles here: https://takflix.com/uk/films/evge (it’s a Ukrainian streaming service, you need to buy the movie for a whooping price of 95 UAH (less than 2 Dollars))
3Khrystyna Soloviy
Жива вода

Pamfir (2022, Ukr. “Памфір”) – Another Oscar submission, what can you do. An insight into Bukovyna culture (a historical region in the South-West of Ukraine), particularly into the fascinating world of cross-border smuggling. Available with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81676069?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=81696116

Неонова Мрія

Luxembourg, Luxembourg (2022, Ukr “Люксембург, Люксембург”) – Our comedies generally turn out pathetic rather than funny, but this one is nice. A story of two identical twins with radically different personalities and ways of life embarking on an unlikely journey from the glorious, world-famous Ukrainian city of Lubny to Luxembourg. Available with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81687038?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=81691825
5Stoned Jesus
Songs to Sun

The Color of Pomegranates (1969, ukr. “Колір Гранату”) A bit of classics for a change. This one is by Serhiy Parajanov, the prolific director who managed to become a classic for several cultures, while being a dissident and sodomizing (yes, as in fucking) Soviet bureaucrats in his spare time. This is actually the least Ukrainian movie on the list, as here Parajanov embraced his Armenian heritage and directed a movie about a medieval Armenian poet and troubadour. But it’s a very quirky and poetic movie, and it’s available in Ukrainian with English subtitles, so why not? Available in Ukrainian with English subtitles here: http://megogo.net/ua/view/5713 (Another Ukrainian streaming service. You’d have to register and probably pay for a subscription (although older movies may be available for free with some advertisements popping up during watching. I could just give you temporary access to my account, no issues with that).
6Spock's Beard
The Oblivion Particle

The Mother of Apostles (2019, ukr. “Мати Апостолів”) Back to the modern times: a Ukrainian woman ventures to the occupied territories of Donbas hoping to learn the fate of her son, a Ukrainian pilot whose plane was shot down over Donetsk. A rather interesting insight into the power dynamics between the local collaborationists and the officers of the Russian army a few years before the full-scale invasion. Available in Ukrainian with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81774092?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=81781464
7Conception
State of Deception

The Lost Letter (ukr. “Пропала Грамота,” actually filmed in 1972, released in 1983 due to assholeness of Soviet censorship) – I had some doubts about this item, because this is the one movie on the list that I feel won’t resonate with a foreigner as much as it would with a Ukrainian. Nevertheless, it’s one of my favorite movies. It’s an adaptation of a short story by Mykola Gogol, and while the original has more of a horror touch to it, the movie has a lighter, more comedic tone. It is rather quirky and even uses some post-modernistic storytelling techniques. Available here in Ukrainian with English subtitles: https://takflix.com/uk/films/propala-hramota
8David Gilmour
Luck And Strange

Toloka (ukr. «Толока», 2020) – A movie by Mykhailo Illenko, another old classic of Ukrainian cinema. He normally takes quite a few years to make a movie, partly due to perennial budget issues, but also due to his meticulous approach and distinct style. This one is rather surrealistic. Available in Ukrainian with English subtitles: http://megogo.net/ua/view/18522416

Цвіт Магнолії

The Antarctic (ukr. Атлантида, 2025) – I wish I could include more documentaries in this list, we have some really interesting ones. But I couldn’t find most of the ones I like with English subtitles. So, at least there’s this rather detailed depiction of a Ukrainian blogger’s journey to the Antarctic. If you ever decide to venture to that marvelous continent, this movie could serve as a step-by-step manual. Available in Ukrainian with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/82182157?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=82187853
10Avantasia
Here Be Dragons

Rhino (ukr. «Носоріг», 2021) – A movie by Oleg Sentsov, a film director from Crimea who spent several years in Russian prisons on trumped-up terrorism charges following the 2014 annexation of Crimea. This is his most fully realized work, an exploration of criminal life of Ukraine in the nineties with very interesting approach to directing, editing, and camera work. Available in Ukrainian with English subtitles here: https://www.netflix.com/title/81774092?s=a&trkid=13747225&trg=more&clip=81781464
