Alk's Top 10 Horror Movies of 2025

I didn't see all of the horror movies this year, but after watching Frankenstein I feel like I hit the highlights and some duds too. There weren't a ton of horror movies I was interested in this year, but definitely open to suggestions for ones that slipped past! Not big into mommy horror, super abstract arthouse horror or by-the-numbers hauntings unless they're really good.
10Inner Cloister
Demo MMXXV

V/H/S Halloween - I did not like this one, mainly because I don’t like watching kids getting killed in awful ways. Feel free to skip this installment. Some of the skits are great, but some are like pulling nails. V/H/S Beyond was much better in my opinion.
9Veilburner
Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy

Die My Love - An abstract horror depiction of post-partum depression. It’s aping A24 so hard and moderately succeeding. Feel free to skip this one (unlike Veilburner which you should listen to), but Twilight guy and Hunger Games gal do a solid job acting here so if you like Pattinson or Lawrence definitely check this out.
8Hooded Menace
Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration

Bring Her Back - A serviceable horror movie that didn’t really leave much of a mark. It does show a lot of potential for the directors though who started off as Youtubers. But this movie proves that growth is possible! Hopefully they’ll be able to build off this base. Worth a watch.
7All Hell
Sunsetter

Weapons - The biggest disappointment of the year. Weapons was a good movie, don’t get me wrong, but the hype train really derailed this one for me. Barbarians was one of the best horror movies that’s come out in recent years, right up there with The Substance, but Weapons just doesn’t have the juice. I don’t really know what it is, but I think it’s mainly because the ending fell flat. That said, definitely watch it if you’re curious, and Julia Garner’s acting makes it worth a watch on its own.
6Martrod
Draumsýnir Eldsins

Together - A great little body horror movie that really makes you think about your bodily and emotional autonomy, and what it means to partner with someone. Plus the acting and casting are great (hells bells, Trudy!) and the plot is serviceable enough. Probably won’t rewatch it but it was fun while it lasted.
5Dead and Dripping
Nefarious Scintillations

Final Destination: Bloodlines - Movie kicked ass. You already know what you're in for so I won't say much. But everything about this movie was great. I was laughing so hard pretty much the whole way through in the theater. A ridiculous and wildly fun movie.
4The Acacia Strain
You Are Safe From God Here

The Long Walk - It's common knowledge that movie adaptations of King novels usually suck (Pet Sematary), or at best are just okay (looking at you IT reboot). The best interpretation is still Kubrick's The Shining, and that's in large part because he essentially told King to fuck off and made his own movie.

Going into The Long Walk, I had my hopes tempered in light of this long history of middling outings and disappointment. But good god was I wrong. The Long Walk is a brutal and exhausting movie that succeeds entirely with what it set out to do. Which is mainly wear the viewer down along with the characters. A genuinely great adaptation.

Side note: Most of the album/movie pairings are fairly random, maybe vibes influenced, but this one is definitely a 1 to 1 crossover lol
3Yellow Eyes
Confusion Gate

28 Years Later - This movie was a definite climber. I didn't know what to make of it after seeing it, but the more I thought about it the more I 'got' it. Boyle and Garland essentially invented the modern zombie genre with 28 Days Later. It was dripping in post-9/11 paranoia and perfectly fit the mood of the time. So much so that it single-handedly launched the zombie craze of the mid-2000s.

But times have changed. Whereas 28 Days Later relied on the implicit assumption that the outbreak was a deviation, and that there would one day be a home to return to, that's not how our world has panned out. Shit sucks somehow even more now in 2025 than it did in 2003, and the idea of returning to a 'normal' is essentially cooked. The genius of 28 Years Later is it acknowledges this both in its setting and themes. It also injects the zombie genre they created with such a heavy dose of folk horror that it essentially becomes something new. All hail the new zombies!
2Cradle of Filth
The Screaming of the Valkyries

Frankenstein - Del Toro made one of my favorite movies ever with Pan's Labyrinth. Hellboy 2 and Pacific Rim are also excellent movies, but he hasn't really reached the same heights as Pan's Labyrinth since. That is until Frankenstein. This is a modern gothic masterpiece. It has heart and a surprising amount of gore. Both this and Sinners should bag some Oscars.
1Blut Aus Nord
Ethereal Horizons

Sinners - Hands down my favorite horror movie of the year. The characters felt like real people with full back stories, the plot didn't have any holes and the 80s vampire atmosphere was spot on. I loved everything about this movie. If you haven’t seen it yet you should do yourself a favor and go watch it now. Might be my movie of the year as well, but I'm waiting to finally watch One Battle After Another to decide.
