01.06.26 | Also just flagging that the Inner Cloister demo is very good. Would have been a 4 or higher for me if it was a song or two longer. |

01.06.26 | I don't watch horrors at all but The Black Phone 2 was really good. Perfectly suspenseful and excellently using the analog horror aesthetic, suffers only because of overabundand "girl power" scenes and infantile dialogues towards the end. |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | That one looked solid, I just haven't watched the first one yet since it seemed like the previews basically gave everything away. Do you think Black Phone 2 is worth watching without the full backstory from the first movie? Or should I watch them in order. |
arthropod
01.06.26 | I haven't watched the first one either. The second movie gives everything about the first as well and seems to be more about exploring certain plot points "post factum" and the main character's trauma after the events of the first one. So... watching the first one beforehand might improve the experience but part 2 should be good enough as a standalone piece. |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | Good to know, thanks! Yeah that sounds like it would be pretty easy to jump right into. It did look pretty cool, all the ominous ice skating scenes seem fun. |
arthropod
01.06.26 | Frankly, the visual aspect is superb. The whole thing goes downhill towards the end for the reasons I mentioned plus some overkill plot armor, but the ice skating well makes up for that. |

01.06.26 | cool list, i rated bring her back and weapons much higher than you and think they're amazing but i agree sinners was the best horror movie this year (and was almost my movie of the year till marty supreme). it's kinda funny because i had no interest in it from the trailer but the reception got me into the theater. so glad i did. looked at my letterboxd and my horror rankings for this year were:
sinners > weapons > bring her back > final destination > bone lake > together > good boy > keeper > shelby oaks > the monkey
i don't rly consider the long walk a horror movie even if it's tagged as one but i'd put it above together and below bone lake. have yet to see frankenstein not all that interested in it tbh but may throw it on when i'm bored one day. overall great year for the genre |
Gameofmetal
01.06.26 | Did not like Frankenstein at all, Weapons and Bring Her Back were quite a bit better. Long Walk one of my favorites of the year. |
mkmusic1995
01.06.26 | Of these, I've only seen Weapons and Frankenstein, both of which I thought were stellar. The ending to Weapons had me laughing so hard from the shock of it all. |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | @trilo Bone Lake looks solid, and I need to check out Good Boy too. I think your ranking makes sense too, I might be a bit harsh on Weapons but it is a really intriguing movie still. I think Frankenstein is great, but interested in seeing why Gameofmetal didn't like it too! And yeah @mkmusic the ending of Weapons was pretty wild lolol |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | I'm also really interested to see where they take the 28 Days Later franchise now. I honestly was fairly unimpressed with 28 Years Later walking out of the theater but it's really grown on me, even though there's one unintentionally hilarious scene in there. |
Futures
01.06.26 | a pretty fairly weak year for horror imo outside of a few heavy hitters. i absolutely loved 28 years later, my second favorite of the year in any genre. i really love the direction they went and the ultimate culmination was so beautifully touching. really struck me. can't wait for bone temple. |
trilo
01.06.26 | bone lake is basically just a horny self-aware b-movie but i had a good time with how stupid it was
horror disappointment of the year for me goes to keeper. osgood perkins continues to frustrate me with how much he nails the directorial side of things but flubs the writing (whether his own or hired). dude would be a horror powerhouse if he could find a writer worth a damn |
Futures
01.06.26 | did not see keeper but i really liked the monkey a lot. that pitch dark comedy tone with the ultraviolence really worked for me. |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | Ooooh Osgood Perkins did Longlegs. That was another one that was decent but also didn't really land for me, despite some really awesome pieces and Cage's amazing HAIL SATAN! I agree a writer who could tie it up better would definitely help.
And agreed about Bone Temple. I just looked up its release date and it's wild that it's already almost out in theaters. |
Futures
01.06.26 | longlegs is so meticulously crafted and intentional, until the very end. really love the filmmaking and tone but wish it wrapped up a little cleaner. |
XingKing
01.06.26 | Bring Her Back is my number 1. Still need to see The Long Walk and Together. |

01.06.26 | "longlegs is so meticulously crafted and intentional, until the very end. really love the filmmaking and tone but wish it wrapped up a little cleaner."
100%. i like longlegs quite a bit but this is basically the critique for all his movies (sans the monkey which i thought was just bad and terribly unfunny all throughout even if i loved the concept). he has such an eye for tone, texture, atmosphere and general aesthetics but his movies always come up short in the writing |
Futures
01.06.26 | i think bring her back is really good but also stumbles a bit at the end. talk to me is one of my favorite horror films of the decade so far. talented fellas. |
AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | Talk To Me was really great. 2022 was such a good year for horror movies. |
JDubb
01.06.26 | 1and 2 are superb! Also liked 7 and 8. |
PizzaBear
01.07.26 | Weapons was an improvement on everything I didn't like about Barbarian. Barbarian felt like I was watching 3 different movies poorly spliced together whereas with Weapons it felt like the more comedic bits were actually integrated into the plot in a way that flowed and made sense.
Hard agree on 1 |
Calc
01.07.26 | 5 was one of the dumbest movies I'd seen in a long time. I do need to check out The Long Walk though. |
JerseyJimmy
01.08.26 | The Long Walk was phenomenal and Bloodlines was pretty much everything I ever wanted from one more FD film. I stress "one more" because I feel like the seventh one they inevitably make is gonna have a real "party ended an hour ago and he's still here" vibe. |
Rowan5215
01.08.26 | Bring Her Back is 1, incredible movie |
AlkemestRedux
01.08.26 | Yee I did love 1 through 4. Kind of hit or miss after that.
Interesting that you didn't like Barbarian @PizzaBear. I can see that criticism though. I actually liked how it kept you on your toes throughout the movie but I could see how it could also be viewed as disjointed. I think part of the reason why I liked it is because it felt so fresh and I couldn't predict what was coming next.
And yeah Long Walk is solid @Calc, definitely one to check out. It's relentless. And on Bloodlines it was definitely dumb but I think @Jersey nails it, basically nothing new but I loved the insane ride lol
I feel like Bring Her Back was decent, but maybe I'll need to rewatch it @Rowan. Seems like a lot of people really liked it. I think it had its moments but idk what just didn't click for me. |
PizzaBear
01.08.26 | I think part of why it bothered me so much is because of how much I was enjoying the first part of the movie. The tension it had created during that initial Air BNB portion had me on the edge of my seat. It was doing a really great job portraying the fear of that woman showing up to an Air BNB to find a strange man there and making you second guess whether he or something even more dangerous was the threat there (man or the bear before it was cool ha).
And then poof, all that tension evaporates in the second act and I'm essentially watching a comedy now. Then it turned dark again towards the end and each tonal shift felt jarring which I guess could be seen as a positive in horror but in this case just felt like the director had 3 different ideas and found a way to shoehorn them together. |
AlkemestRedux
01.08.26 | I can see that. The big jarring shift was definitely one of the things I really liked about it though. THAT scene had my whole family screaming lol
Also the little scene of Justin Long googling if basements add to square footage after he found the complex is so good. |

01.08.26 | I really can't rec Exhuma and Oddity enough, for fans of horror. To me, by far, Exhuma was horror of the year. And Oddity is so fucking creepy. They are my #1 and #2 for '25. |
AlkemestRedux
01.08.26 | Man Oddity was amazing. I think that may have been in 2024 at least in the US otherwise that would have probably been my #2. It was so dang good. Haven't seen Exhuma, but it looks solid, I'll check it out! Choi Min-sik is a boss. |
0GuyMan0
01.08.26 | Yeah he's fuckin' great. Hope you like it, I've had great success sharing it with people so far, only barriers is a slightly slow start and that it's Korean (though after Parasite people are more ready to read subtitles it seems). |
trilo
01.08.26 | oddity has been on my watch list for a minute. he also has a new movie coming this year called hokum. very intrigued |
AlkemestRedux
01.08.26 | Hell yeah I'll give it a watch! Sounds like a blast.
And you gotta watch Oddity trilo, it's very good. Didn't know he had a new movie, gonna have to look into this. |
0GuyMan0
01.08.26 | Hokum and Eggers' new one Werwulf have me so fuckin' hyped. And honestly, there's a spark of possibility in Resident Evil since it's the guy who did Barbarian and Weapons. |
