12.28.25 | I operate on a spectrum with Black Metal. I prefer shit thatās super weird and off-putting / experimental, but donāt care for the dissonant Imperial Triumphant type shit. Or i really like grandiose, melodic shit, but tend to avoid symphonic stuff, unless itās weird and off-putting.
Big into second wave type stuff too, but iām a bit picky because i know the major releases, and find the remainder of those bands to be some of the most basic slop ever. |

Hawks

arthropod
12.28.25 | Have you heard Groza by MgÅa and/or the latest Blackbraid? They should cut it.
Also:
- Gallowbraid - Ashen Eidolon. It's close to Agalloch, but less desolate.
- Thy Worshiper - Czarna Dzika CzerwieÅ. Some off-putting folk bm.
- Morthar - 10 Commandments. Heavily inspired by early bm; I compared the overall sound to Freezing Moon in my review but its main quality is just being tight and pissed.
- The latest Asteriae fits the grandiose category to a degree. It's bm/post-metal/hardcore with a really desperate atmosphere. |
AlkemestRedux
12.28.25 | I came across this PNW band called Gathering and their self titled debut is pretty good. Solid meloblack. Might go see them next week. |

Brabiz
12.30.25 | @hawks idk, I think the production on the new one is fantastic, and the vocals have a lot of power behind them. Good Opeth-like songwriting with a psychedelic / purposefully eldritch atmosphere. The first album has a lot of good riffs, but everything feels a bit stretched. Too many repetitions with riffs, standard meloblack sounding stuff.
Itās not bad, Iād just rather listen to Emperor or something |
Hawks
12.30.25 | Understandable tbh. |

AlkemestRedux
01.04.26 | They were crazy good! Very polished and put together with a ton of energy. Their meloblack riffs are great but I also noticed they included some melodeath too which is fun, and thematically they're very much in the nature worshipping Cascadian bm mold and at times you can hear that regional influence in their music too. Also, really chill. Talked with their frontman for a minute and he seems like a nice guy. |

01.06.26 | Seconding Blut Aus Nord. 10/10 discography. |
Brabiz
01.06.26 | I think for me, the few tracks Iāve heard feel like typical āavant gardeā black metal, like Imperial Triumphant. Which isnāt necessarily my vibe at all.
But Iām also aware that I could be wrong based on how I felt about the first album. |
arthropod
01.06.26 | Who the fuck names their band "Stutthof"?

Okay, nevermind. I don't know what I expected from a genre that spawned a band named "Holocausto". |

AlkemestRedux
01.06.26 | Hmm yeah probably a good indication.
Always unfortunate when you uncover a good band is actually nsbm. I always try and do a lil check before I get really into a band to make sure they're not releasing on Satanic Skinhead Propaganda or something. |
Brabiz
01.07.26 | I donāt pay attention at all, and donāt really plan to. With black metal itās basically a dice roll, and I donāt particularly care if im being completely honest. |
arthropod
01.07.26 | Satanism gets a pass from me, nazi shit is one step too far. Same rule as with DSBM, music may rip but imma avoid it if there's hangmen or Konzentrationslagers before my eyes.
On the other hand, paganism and nihilism are cool. Especially paganism. |
AlkemestRedux
01.07.26 | Yee agree mostly. I have a somewhat looser guideline where if I like a band but they're garbage people, I'll just pirate their music if I'm interested in hearing them. It's not like listening to a band will change my deeply held anti-Nazi beliefs, but I'm sure as hell not putting money in the pockets of people who want to see me and people I love dead by buying their music or merch.
That said I just feel too gross listening to some bands where the hate is the point even if they're good musically. Like I'll listen to and pirate Burzum because it's all like LoTR-core, but not Arghoslent because all their songs are about raping people they view as lesser or equally dumb and vile shit. |
arthropod
01.07.26 | The mere fact that their drummer's pseudonym is Aktion T4 is just...
*laughs hysterically
I can agree that piracy is a pretty good way around the issue in some cases, even though I don't indulge in it. Generally it all boils down to one's tolerancy to certain themes. Mine is pretty low.
My flag avoided band is Nokturnal Mortum, but that's partly because of my unresolved sentiment towards what Ukrainians did in '43. Pro-Nazi music is repulsive by design but this type of stuff coming from Ukrainians is a different level of offensive. |
Brabiz
01.09.26 | Lowered Blackbraid IIIās average with that one, sorry arthropod. :( |
Brabiz
01.09.26 | I will say though, I really enjoy the acoustic parts. But any black metal portion sounds so safe and cookie cutter to me. Save for a few standout melodies. |
arthropod
01.09.26 | Opposite. I find the acoustic parts too repetitive, while the black metal passages are overblown but generally enjoyable. And Sacred Stag stands tall as a whole. |
AlkemestRedux
01.09.26 | Yee the other two Blackbraid albums didn't really do it for me but I dug the latest one a lot. Also, Beneath Moonlight slaps, listening to that now. |
Brabiz
01.10.26 | Bumped Morthar up a bit. Shit is just so damn good. Itās a hard sell to get me to enjoy new additions to that style of BM in the current landscape of the genre, but it excels at what it is. |
Sevengill
01.10.26 | I can't help but feel like Blackbraid is solid but generic atmosblack that people vibe with for the aesthetic and native tilt. But maybe I'm just jelly. Probably that. |

01.14.26 | Glad you liked Thy Worshiper. They've put out a new single recently but it doesn't feel tribal at all and actually taps into gothic territory. That may be a one-off deal though since the drummer from their Czarna Dzika CzerwieÅ era just returned to the band. Also, the vocalist from Narbo Dacal is on the mic so I'm hyped as shit.
As far as I'm aware, Klechdy is pretty close to CDC stylistically but they went nuts with song lengths there. |

I stumbled across this collective (which I'm pretty sure is just like five dudes lol) that publish under the label label, Cestrum Nocturnum Recordings. At least one of the dudes is/was part of Hissing but they're pumping out interesting little lo-fi black metal demos. I really liked the one I reviewed - Inner Cloister. Might be worth checking out! I linked to the other bands in the review.
Noceur is also really interesting. They're experimental black metal but in a really interesting way. Their The Hunger album has a bunch of trip hop on it mixed with like noise-infused black metal. |
