Listening through Nile

I'm finally listening through the Nile discography.

Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka

4/5

This was way more brutal death metal than I was expecting. Really awesome and I think the bits of Middle Eastern flair work well, even though they feel a bit shoehorned in at times. When they work they really work well.

Black Seeds of Vengeance

3.8/5

This was solid but not really as much fun or as intense as their debut.

In Their Darkened Shrines

5/5

They turned up the EVIL vibes in this one and really nailed down their songwriting while keeping a good mix of aggression. My favorite so far.

Annihilation Of The Wicked

4.5/5

This is a classic, and also the only Nile album I'd listened to before embarking on this discog listen. It's still great, but Shrines and Detest are stronger imo. Killer riffs and great production. Definitely deserves the recognition it gets.

Ithyphallic

3.5/5

It's still decent death metal but feels lackluster compared to their earlier stuff, especially coming off Shrines and Annihilation. 'Even the Gods Must Die' is pretty rad though. I'll have to listen through some of the youtube remasters.

Those Whom The Gods Detest

5/5

The production and songwriting match up again! Man the composition on these songs is wild and it all sounds fantastic. So far, it's this and Shrines at the top for me. The title track almost sounds like a movie soundtrack in the best way possible.

At The Gate of Sethu

3/5

Album has some great tunes and riffs, but it seems like a lot of the Egyptian flair that gave other songs on other albums more of a kick was exported to interludes here. They're cool, but it makes the interludes extra Egyptian inspired, and the songs themselves more standard death metal. It's not a bad album and there are some killer tracks like 'The Gods Who Light Up the Sky at the Gates of Sethu' and 'The Chaining of the Iniquitous.' Production isn't as good as the previous album but not as tinny as Ithyphallic.

What Should Not Be Unearthed

2.5/5

It's also fine, but they're bleeding the things that make earlier Nile releases so memorable. It's basically just death metal with lyrics about Egyptian mythology at this point. Not much of the really cool or memorable instrumental schenanagins. 'Evil to Cast Out Evil' is pretty cool though.

Vile Nilotic Rites

4/5

The kings are back, baybee! Everything that made Nile good and interesting is making an appearance again. There's actually memorable moments that are incorporated into the songs themselves. Less just grinding death metal and more almighty riffs. Seven Horns and Imperishable Stars are incredible tracks and most of them are strong. Toler-Wade leaving is noticeable but the overall improvement makes up for it.

The Underworld Awaits Us All

3.9/5

Solid album. What I've learned after listening through Nile's discography is I really appreciate the weird shit that Nile does that makes them Nile. Like the title track here was good, but could have been ordinary until during the final choruses there's some freaky backing vocals that come in. That's the stuff that makes Nile really pop for me. I'm excited for the next album whenever it comes out.
