| Sputnik Anniversary Lyrics List Part One
I was supposed to publish this on Friday, but there was a submission failure, and I didn't have a backup, of course. Indeed, it was on the 1st of August 2016, that I registered on Sputnikmusic.com after approximately one and a half years of lurking. So, this is a celebratory list. I've decided to make it about my favorite lyrics, since hardly anybody ever talks about the lyrics on this site or elsewhere. Yet, they are an important aspect of a song!
I've decided to break the list into two parts for the reader's convenience. The second part will be published in a week or two. Mostly I stick to one song per artist, but there are exceptions as I see fit. Read on if you're curious, and remember that tastes differ. | | 1 | | Converge Bloodmoon: I
Converge – "Crimson Stone"
Jacob Bannon is quite an accomplished lyricist, but this song from the Chelsey Wolfe collaboration is particularly fascinating to me. Pure ominous fatalism. | | 2 | | Deftones White Pony
Deftones – "Passenger"
I’ve seen Chino’s lyrics criticized for being juvenile and whatnot, but I’ve always liked his way with words, even before I got into Deftones music. My pick for this list, for instance, is a wonderful hymn to closeness, togetherness, and completeness | | 3 | | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Ghosteen
Nick Cave – "Bright Horses"
Nick Cave is a renowned poet, of course, and I like a lot of his lyrics. But this particular song is magical. It fills me with hope. | | 4 | | The Black Queen Fever Daydream
The Black Queen – "Ice To Never"
Greg Puciato is one of my favorite lyricists and performers. I even bought his poetry book on Amazon. Oh, and The Dillinger Escape Plan is probably my favorite band of all time. I could’ve also included “Farewell, Mona Lisa” or ”Widower” by the Dillinger, or even “Temporary Object” from Greg’s solo debut as an example of his lyrical prowess | | 5 | | Every Time I Die Low Teens
Every Time I Die – “Map Change”
I will never really enjoy Keith Buckley’s voice, but he is (or used to be) a great songwriter. It’s a shame that he became what he is now. | | 6 | | Marillion Sounds That Can't Be Made
Marillion – "Power"
Post-Fish Marillion is severely underrated, and that includes the lyrics. I could’ve included some of their Fish-fronted material as an example, but their later lyrics are just as good. “You never knew power, did you?” | | 7 | | Primal Rock Rebellion Awoken Broken
Primal Rock Rebellion – “Tortured Tone”
Everybody dissed this Adrian Smith’s project, and very few kind words were said about it. So, he went on to produce boring retro albums with Ritchie Kotzen. You are welcome to like what you like, of course, but to me, this whole album is a forgotten jewel, and Mikee Goodman’s vocals and lyrics are an important part of it. | | 8 | | Peter Hammill Fool's Mate
Peter Hammill – "Vision"
I’ve never known the joy of mutual love, but I get how wonderful that must feel. | | 9 | | Twenty One Pilots Vessel
Twenty One Pilots – "Car Radio"
If you have ever had dark or hopeless thoughts with nothing to distract you from them, you should dig this song. Maybe even if you don’t like the band’s music in general | | 10 | | U.D.O. Faceless World
U.D.O. – Heart of Gold
Udo Dirkschneider is hardly the greatest wordsmith of our time, yet sometimes a simple but kind and honest message resonates in one’s heart | | 11 | | Dream Theater Images And Words
Dream Theater – "Wait For Sleep"
In my opinion, Kevin Moore was the one truly gifted poet in the band. After his departure, the majority of DT lyrics range from mediocre to laughable. To be fair, John Myung is also capable of writing interesting lyrics (I love “Lifting Shadows Off A Dream”), but they won’t let him do it now that Portnoy is back. | | 12 | | Demons and Wizards Touched by the Crimson King
Demons and Wizards – "Wicked Witch"
Hansi is underrated and underappreciated as a lyricist. He covers a wide range of topics and evokes a multitude of emotions with his words both in Blind Guardian and, especially, in his Demons And Wizards project. | | 13 | | Frightened Rabbit Painting of a Panic Attack
Frightened Rabbit – “Get Out”
Scott Hutchison was unique, and this world needs more people like him. Sadly, he chose to leave it. All that is left for us is to enjoy his songs | |
