Black Sabbath Ranked - Ozzy Recordings Only

Props to the organisation of the Back to The Beginning show to honour Ozzy and the originators of heavy metal//
1Black Sabbath
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

The crowning jewel in the Black Sabbath discography. Their most creative and inspired songs all flavoured with its unmistakable atmosphere. The guitars and drums sound incredible and are accentuated by all manner of cameo instruments, electronics and even samples. Ozzy is at his best too. So ahead of its time for rock and metal and for me the best album of the 1970's.

A National Acrobat
2Black Sabbath
Sabotage

Following the legendary SBS, Sabbath almost out-did themselves with their heaviest and strangest album which was another magical recording. Every song is creative as hell, almost bonkers. You can hear the riffs that NWOBHM and glam metal grew from as well as the earliest proto-thrash song Symptom of the Universe. Classic

Black Sabbath

The birth of heavy metal was filled with iconic songs not least the opening epic. These classic songs, including NIB and The Wizard introduce a style of bass heavy, downtuned guitars and infernal themes. It was the start of everything.
5.0
The Wizard
4Black Sabbath
Vol. 4

Always loved the atmosphere on this album even if the songs are little inconsistent. Changes is a bit cringey and FX adds nothing but the bookend tracks hold it together. The others are legit Sabbath songs with the closer being the best song, as is often the case with Sabbath.
4.3
Under the Sun
5Black Sabbath
Master Of Reality

Has the better ballad in Solitude than Vol.4's Changes but overall prefer Vol4. Very similar to Vol.4 as they are both feature drugs themes (this weed and Vol4. coke), both have 2 questionable brief interlude tracks (this has Embryo and Orchid) and both have very distinct atmospheres. Every other song is classic but these days I've heard them too much.
4.2
Into the Void
6Black Sabbath
Paranoid

Hard classic no doubt. I actually first knew of most of these songs via covers. War Pigs by FNM, Planet Caravan by Pantera, Paranoid by Megadeth, it had a monumental impact. This is heavy metal at the beginning of time with songs quite basic and rigid - songs like War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, which I probably don't need to hear again ha. I see this as the equivalent as Maiden's Number of the Beast - universally lauded and incredibly influential but the songwriting got much better in subsequent albums imo.

Fairies Wear Boots
7Black Sabbath
Technical Ecstasy

Following the incredible Sabotage, this album is a cool change of pace as songs like the Bill Ward-sung It's Alright and Gypsy attest. I actually like all these songs even if most folk don't.
3.9
Gypsy
8Black Sabbath
Never Say Die!

Another underrated Sabbath album. They took some chances for the final 2 Ozzy albums but rather than duds they were simply exploring other sounds and ways to take their music and delivered with a relatively modern sound at the time. They might've been loaded on drugs but could still put together a good album - incredibly 8 great albums in 8 years and by far the best band of the 70's and imo better than any non-Ozzy album.
3.9
Air Dance

Album is all well and good for a reunion farewell effort. Draws upon their 70's ideas in music and lyrical themes but is in no way essential listening.
