and I mean I kind of doubt that this is really the sum of it, but it seems to be being made out like this crusade is all revolving around normaloctagon having a staff/contributor role removed for the valid reason that reviews were not being produced which as far as I know is supposed to be the primary factor regarding these roles, not how tight you are with the clique... seems like it was actually probably overdue and that some stepping on toes in other ways may have prompted overdue action to finally be taken... probably has always been a problem here when it comes to the folks who apply for and serve in those roles... not meant to be an attack on this user just saying... I guess when the demotion was done some blog writings got deleted or something and this fanned the flames even more... I mean only the person who did it can truly say for certain whether that part was done deliberately or was an honest mistake/accident, but I'm pretty sure it was indicated that in regards to the deleted content, this could be resolved/undone |

Norma was really active regarding weekly blog posts and did some stuff setting up metal interviews with Nex, he just wasn't the most prolific reviewer. I think we needed more meaningful blog post and interview action on the site as a way to have something unique and engaging and give the site a little more traction.
It was a needlessly stubborn move whether the mods were in the right or not. The site is gonna be relegated to 3 or 4 semi prolific writers and caps lock Hawks posting now. That's just not enough to truly carry a site that wanted to branch out even with an owner who doesn't really care |

That’s fair, he does mention it as a contributing factor, but I think it’s clear from his initial long post that the main reason he outlines was that he tried to ransom his contributions in exchange for some capitulation from the mods. Sowing indicates that, along with certain other clashes, that was the final straw.
No disrespect intended @Sharenge, I probably shouldn’t have said you “didn’t read” but I do think it’s inaccurate to say the demotion of normal, at least according to the logs, was primarily a matter of lacking contributions. |

I just think it would all allow for more flexibility and leniency given that it's a much less necessitated agreement, and the more I've given it thought I mean this for both the mods and the staff. There's parallels in the sense of I supply X thing under Y agreement, but the actual necessity of it to the individual is vastly smaller than a job which ig is an obvious point.

Which is why I do believe now that maybe it was a bit wild for 19 staffers to decide to take a demotion for a cause that was only partially justifiable, although I also believe that maybe none of them thought the mods would be completely immutable on such a stance. In an ideal scenario if only for the sites even more sizeable drop in activity I'd imagine it'd best if Norm was reinstated and there was a little more direct back and forth between mods and staff even if this all began with a slightly overblown metric that kind of resulted in a needlessly pissy back and forth. I do hope the doors are still open and that at least a few of them return and that there is some sort of healthy metric that is established. I'm already missin Nex's sweet DM lists and honestly (with the understandable disdain for him in mind) Johnny's review analysis that honestly kind of inspired to me to get better at writing in my own individual manner. |

I would not have the music taste I do these days if I hadn’t come on here in tenth grade and made an account. I’ve learned SO much and discovered SO many bands because of this site, and even in its diminished state that remains true. Most recently I found Saidan because of Sputnik.
So to see it imploding in on itself is kind of a bummer, and I hope we see some of those staffers back. If what hawks is saying is to be believed, some were roped into this without much input and approval.
But all that being said, I honestly think this site will be a better place without some of the 19. Plenty of good writers that don’t have STAFF next to their name on here, and as long as the reviews and lists are sustained, I think 90% of us will be happy. This was never an integral space for blogging about music, and the emphasis put on that hasn’t done much for me personally. Maybe others differ but I’m here for review, dumpster fire comment sections, and stupid pointless lists |

We can't bring new blood to the site, let alone keep an actual presence outside of the little hugbox this place is and always has been. There has to be another way through, but this isn't it. Cutting people loose isn't going to make the site more active than it already is and that is incredibly frustrating. It's easy to just say good riddance and pretend that some of the people involved are going to want to come back (something I highly doubt, because frankly speaking, I don't see how there's any coming back from this), but who's going to step up then? You have someone who clearly doesn't care about the website and his handlers who are more than content to pretend everything's okay. Something has got to give at some point and shitflinging about it isn't the solution. |

With regards to the issue at hand, I do think two things should've been done: I think the concerns brought up, whatever you may think of them, should've been addressed and acknowledged. This is the team responsible for a good deal of this site's visibility, so I do feel their concerns should've been taken a bit more seriously. Secondly, cooler heads should've prevailed here. Immediately banning or demoting them was not the answer. If you really wanted this to be kept under wraps, just let them walk and cut your losses. Because they didn't do that, we have *this* to deal with. |

It's fine if anyone wants to stay here, and while the pool of writers is obviously shrinking there is still quality. I quite like and agree with the Lorde review that's up and POS'd as likely my final act on Sput that isn't this comment. We're working on something else in good time, but it'll be ready when it's ready. I'm proud of my time on Sput and hope the site keeps going in whatever capacity. |

I wrote in the review that one of the many reasons the album was impressive was that you could interpret the lyrics/narrative in a variety of ways. Yes, I know in hindsight that's not the most compelling argument to make about why an album is GOOD, but I was 16.
Anyway, I remember one of the first comments I got was something along the lines of "what kind of vapid, horrible music are you listening to normally to where an album is suddenly good to you because it can be INTERPRETTED??"

07.01.25 | As is tradition when big sputnik drama goes down and my name gets mentioned even though I've been banned for longer than I was a part of the site (lol) someone has alerted me to the drama and i have arrived! Let me (Iluvatar/john hanson) clear a few things up:
1. I have no recollection of who Hyperion1001 is. Sorry if I was a dick to you little buddy. You should really be over it but alas we all have our neurosis, mine happen to lead me back here every 3 or 4 years!
2. Me and Electric City/Adam Downer were banned and kicked from staff for saying the intro to some other staffers review was bad in the sort of private (at that point pretty much anyone could join if anyone in the group liked you enough to invite you) mezzanine crew. Brandon Scott** (rip) tipped off Jom and since Jom always hated me and probably didn't care about Adam as much anymore, him and mx decided to just nuke us (is this the last important mx act to sputnik? seems like it from the state of the site). There was some defense of us in Olympus (very funny name for a private staff forum) and jom/mx gave us Emeritus. The wild thing was other staffers had been banned for many, many offenses and I think I had only ever gotten a like 3 day ban for changing my neil perry review to a bunch of gibberish after I decided it sucked.
3. To my knowledge no one else was banned or kicked from staff for this. Just us two. I know Spat Out Plath/Dave was winding down his involvement here around that time and I had a short convo with him around then, but anyone else who left staff was completely unrelated/just part of the natural churn of disinterest in the site over time.
It is very funny that nothing has improved in mod communication with the sites writers and that the site itself seemingly gets more and more busted as the years have gone by. I wish I could say I left the site of my own volition but I did not. I do wish one of the mods would finally listen to me when I ask for my reviews to be deleted from the site but alas, it seems as though I will remain a ghost of mediocre review past! |

Odal can post all the convos I had with staff and I could do the same thing when I was told one side of the story lol. I was then told that everyone was fired and THAT made me think it was all on the mods. Wasn't until more info came trickling out that I realized it was a two-way street and both sides could've done things to handle it differently. Yeah, I may have bad mouthed the mods, but once again, when I had only the staff's side. Nobody is talking about why Nex blocked me for no reason when I was messaging him to see if he was okay.
