The GOATed 1970s Oscar Best Picture Winners

Easily the best slate of best picture winners for any decade. The Oscars very often get it wrong with best picture, and they get it wrong with a couple of these, but they get it the least wrong of any decade here.
1Bladee
Red Light

1970: Patton
I’m not the biggest Pattonhead, it’s probably my least favorite of the list. George C. Scott (RIP) gives one of the best performances ever though, and it’s gorgeously shot and well made blah blah blah. It’s just a bit long, there are better WWII movies, and it’s a lot of scenes of Patton being a piece of shit over and over again. Still, a classic movie, and sets the stage for screenwriter Francis foreign-car Coppola’s decade domination.
2ECCO2K
E

1971: The French Connection
RIP Billy Friedkin, one of the best to ever do it. One of the saltiest, most entertaining, most batshit insane people who ever lived. Look up some interviews with my man, almost as good as his films. As for the film, I don’t think it’s his best, Exorcist/Sorcerer/Cruising/To Live and Die in LA are all better, but this is still a great film with some of the most dangerous car chase scenes ever shot. And Gene Hackman (RIP) is iconic as Popeye Doyle.
3The Hope and the Failure
The Lights Are on But This Dance Never Ends

1972: The Godfather
It’s the fucking Godfather dude, I don’t have to say shit. One of the best films ever made. Coppola you crazy bastard and your massive movie making family, you set up your own shot, shot it, got your own rebound, and dunked that sucker.
4Banner Pilot
Heart Beats Pacific

1973: The Sting
Iconic movie. It’s been forgotten a little bit compared to the other movies on this list which is a shame because it’s one of my favorites. This is just a fun caper with cool ass ragtime music in it, and Community did a parody episode of it, need I say more? Please see The Sting if you haven’t. RIP Paul Newman, gonna drink some salad dressing in his honor.
5The Beach Boys
Surf's Up

1974: The Godfather II
Arguably better than the first one, but also a miserable slog at the same time. The dual timeline narrative is so fucking cool, and there are like ten Oscar worthing performances in this thing. Diane (it was an abortion, Michael!) Keaton gets clowned on but I think she’s great in this. Some days I think this is better than the first, and some days I think it’s slightly worse, but still this is one of the best movies ever made.
6The Promise Ring
Nothing Feels Good

1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Instantly iconic, kind of a meme movie. Lots of memorable stuff that gets parodied to hell. This movie is a fucking downerbut it’s so goddamn good. Nicholson rocks it, Nurse Ratchet is the first ratchet-type chick in cinema. This movie is extremely popular and you’ve probably already seen it so I’ll leave it at that. They even parody this movie in Good Burger, like goddamn.
7Death
Individual Thought Patterns

1976: Rocky
Rocky is cool. I’m not a huge fan. It definitely had a bigger impact at the time, but it won over Barry Lyndon and Dog Day Afternoon which is a crying shame. It’s a fun feel-good movie that you probably watched with your dad. Shame Stallone mostly gave up on making good movies a long time ago because he is quite good at acting/writing.
8Dorian Electra
My Agenda

1977: Annie Hall
In retrospect this is the most controversial because it won over Star Wars. I loved Annie Hall a lot and it inspired me as a filmmaker, but I haven’t seen it in like ten years because of that Woody Allen stink. I don’t want to make this list about that so all I’m gonna say is that this is a great comedy, it just has a lot of baggage. A New Hope is better anyway.
9Jane Remover
Frailty

1978: The Deer Hunter:
Probably the most polarizing one on this list. This movie is long as fuck and is a huge downer. It borders on melodrama which is off putting to some people, and the unrealistic depiction of the Viet Kong is also a bit wonky. It really gets to the heart of the Vietnam experience though, following characters before they go, during the war, and how fucked up they are after. This is an epic movie full of emotion, but it’s the least rewatchable of all these movies and hasn’t aged all that well.
10JPEGMAFIA
I Lay Down My Life For You

1979: Kramer vs. Kramer
I couldn’t take this movie seriously as a kid because it made me think of Seinfeld so I didn’t see it until my 20s. It’s the most famous divorce movie. It’s funny and sad and long and yeah, similar to Deer Hunter in bordering on being a melodrama. The performances are so goddamn good though, and it def hits different if you have divorced folks. Not the strongest way to end the most GOATed decade, but it’s a better movie than like half the crap that’s won best picture in other years.
