Favorite/Notable Modern DM Pt. 3
Here we go, another round of sick modern death metal from all over the spectrum that I've enjoyed over the past several years. Enjoy, my fellow DM freaks! |
| 1 | | Celestial Sanctuary Insatiable Thirst For Torment
Really tasty stuff with a ton of swagger and a wide range of riffs. Definitely fit for blasting in the car. |
| 2 | | Taphos Come Ethereal Somberness
A bit cavernous, a bit technical, a bit OSDM. One of my favorites of the new wave of old-school inspired DM. |
| 3 | | Sulphurous The Black Mouth of Sepulchre
Extremely solid OSDM with some room for doom. |
| 4 | | Iniquitous Savagery Edifice of Vicissitudes
Technical and brutal with some tasty blast beats and slams. |
| 5 | | Freedom of Fear Nocturnal Gates
Really cool mash-up of melodic, technical, brutal, blackened metal. Their new album is really sick too but it feels like they turned up the symphonic elements a lot, which isn't exactly my particular jam. |
| 6 | | Hideous Divinity Unextinct
I feel like this band is pretty underrated here on Sputnik, which is wild to me because they've been one of my favorites for years now. Tons of awesome, fast-paced riffing and drumming that rarely lets up. |
| 7 | | Deathbringer (BLR) IT
Very groovy, atmospheric death metal with plenty of technical moments. |
| 8 | | Encenathrakh Ithate Thngth Oceate
This is a bit of a cheeky one to include, but it makes me laugh while my jaw is dropping. I'm not 100% sure but I think its basically improv hyper/tech/brutal death metal. Definitely nothing on here reminiscent of traditional song structures. |
| 9 | | Felgrave Otherlike Darknesses
This is a huge blending of different stuff including death, black, doom, etc. Long songs but they're packed with the good stuff. |
| 10 | | Sarcophagum The Grand Arc of Madness
Ulcerate-lite: More drinkable, and doesn't make the room spin nearly as quickly. |
| 11 | | Deceptionist Initializing Irreversible Process
Technical with sharp riffs and precise drumming, feels like Italy must have something in the water. |
| 12 | | Deathfuckingcunt Decadent Perversity
Okay hear me out. The name is stupid and makes you think this is gonna be awful, but this album brings the HEAT. Tons of technical and brutal riffs and surprisingly good songwriting. |
| 13 | | Sarcastic Obedience Fading Faith
I think Voivod put me onto this one, maybe a bit thrashier than most but there's plenty of death metal influence to be found here. |
| 14 | | Perilaxe Occlusion Vapor Chamber
A compilation of their demos/EPs, turned into a "proper" full-length before they disbanded (though they may be back?) Really solid, creepy OSDM with a good mix of fast and slow-paced riffs. |
| 15 | | Spectrum of Delusion Neoconception
Reminds me a ton of Beyond Creation's debut, which isn't unwelcome at all considering they leaned into the melodic side of their sound. Lots of that oozing fretless bass. |
| 16 | | Afterbirth The Time Traveler's Dilemma
Their newer albums are really damn good too, but I think this one might be my favorite because it's super consistent and brutal without veering too far into the weird stuff. |
| 17 | | Burning Palace Elegy
Really solid dissonant/tech with plenty of momentum and some "catchier" moments. |
| 18 | | Fathomless Ritual Hymns for the Lesser Gods
Straight-up Demilich worship but it's about as compelling as it could possibly get. |
| 19 | | Anakim The Elysian Void
Fresh and fast-paced brutal/tech death with some riffs that wouldn't be out of place on a classic on a more accessible release. |
| 20 | | 7 H. Target Yantra Creating
Badass brutal dm with some...Eastern bits? It sounds absolutely stellar, whatever it is. |
| 21 | | Diskord Degenerations
By far their best album. Their last two albums were a bit raw and disjointed for my taste but this is more abstract/proggy death metal done really well. |
| 22 | | Xenoblight Procreation
Thrashy as hell but I had to include it since it kicks ass and has more than enough death metal heft. |
| 23 | | Infecting the Swarm Pulsing Coalescence
I wasn't too impressed with this group until I heard this monster of an album. Takes all the best, most brutal part of their sound and cranks them way up. |
| 24 | | Februus Surveillance Orgy
A fantastic mix of influences from a wide variety of groups with their own spin and plenty of sick double bass work. |
| 25 | | Ophidian I Desolate
Got a good bit of hype around here I feel, but it's definitely worth mentioning. Best descriptor I can think of is "Hyper melo/tech". |
| 26 | | Dearth To Crown All Befoulment
Has that blackened/dissonant/death sound going on, cavernous and almost "war metal" but maybe not quite raw enough. |
| 27 | | Living Gate Suffer As One
Technical OSDM from members of Oathbreaker, Wiegedood and Yob(!), really cool stuff and shows off a different side of the band members. |
| 28 | | Civerous Maze Envy
An extremely compelling death/doom album that really spits for an astral atmosphere. |
| 29 | | Ancient Death Ego Dissolution
This released recently and I knew it would be something special the moment I heard the first single. Proggy/atypical OSDM. |
| 30 | | Desecravity Anathema
One of my favorite "hypertech" bands along with Archspire and Beneath the Massacre. |
| 31 | | Universally Estranged Reared Up In Spectral Predation
Strange old-school inspired death metal with those super low, cavernous vocals. The space synth stuff is a welcome addition as well. |
| 32 | | Reeking Aura Blood And Bonemeal
Featuring Will Smith from Artificial Brain on vocals, this is some kickass material from a prolific group of musicians. |
| 33 | | Unfathomable Ruination Finitude
The follow-up to this album is fantastic as well, but I think this one takes the cake. Featuring off-the-wall brutality and technicality. |
| 34 | | Scalpture Feldwärts
I'm not super familiar with their latest album, but this one is a sweet slab of ripping OSDM. |
| 35 | | Fractal Generator Convergence
This band never really clicked for me until this album. Atmospheric, a bit technical but not overly so, and with really strong songwriting chops. |
| 36 | | Degial Predator Reign
Utilizes some righteous Angelcorpse influence for pure evil and I love it. |
| 37 | | Axiomatic Dematerialization Absolute Elimination Of Existence
It might not be entirely original, but when the riffs are this nasty and brutal, I'll blast it all day. |
| 38 | | Ominous Ruin Requiem
Lightspeed drumming and approximately a million RPM (riffs per minute). |
| 39 | | Chaos Inception Vengeance Evangel
Chaos Inception are back with their first album in over ten years and they haven't missed a beat. Still as wild and evil as ever. |
| 40 | | Contaminated (AUS) Celebratory Beheading
A fantastic follow-up to their fantastic debut album. I love the raw, but full sound and constant shifting to crazy riff after crazy riff. |
| 41 | | Snet Mokvání V Okovech
Slightly off-kilter, slightly weird OSDM that brings a bit of Ulthar and the like to mind. |
| 42 | | Sutrah (CAN) Dunes
I totally forgot about this band for a long time, but revisiting it, it holds up like nobody's business. |
| 43 | | Resin Tomb Cerebral Purgatory
Awesome grindy death metal with some dissonance thrown in to really blow your brains. |
| 44 | | Carnophage Matter of a Darker Nature
It was tough to choose between this and their 2016 album. Both are fast-paced, manic death metal, but I think the production here suits them better, and it's a bit more "mature". |
