Favorite/Notable Modern DM
Just some awesome modern death metal (probably from the past 2-5 years or so) that I've been digging. This list could be way longer, but I wanted to draw more attention to some "hidden gems" (even if some of these aren't so hidden). Feel free to recommend anything you think might fit the bill! |
| 1 | | Shrine of Skulls Megalith of Madness
I was pretty shocked that I had to add this to the database. Fantastic death metal with incredible soloing and drumming (courtesy of Chason Westmoreland who has played on many great albums like Cambion's "Conflagrate the Celestial Refugium" and the new Dormant Ordeal, among others). |
| 2 | | Cambion Conflagrate the Celestial Refugium
Speaking of Mr. Westmoreland, he also goes absolutely crazy on this one. Basically Angelcorpse on meth, and it's insane. |
| 3 | | Inoculation Actuality
Their last album was a bit disjointed, but they've really refined their sound here and this album has tons of standout moments/tracks. |
| 4 | | Diabolizer Murderous Revelations
Furious brutal/technical death metal. |
| 5 | | Corpus Offal Corpus Offal
Nasty OSDM with a healthy helping of Demilich influence. |
| 6 | | Pillars of Cacophony Paralipomena
Probably the catchiest dissonant death metal I've ever heard. Where Ulcerate bombards you with constant atmosphere and dissonance, PoC injects some more "standard" riffs into the sound, and it works really well. |
| 7 | | Contrarian Sage of Shekhinah
I don't dislike anything this group has put out but this album takes their sound into the stratosphere. Lots of that of early prog/thrash/death influence on this one. |
| 8 | | Dormant Ordeal Tooth and Nail
Chason just doesn't let up. All of this band's albums are stellar, but here they place a heavier emphasis on atmosphere and suffocating the listener. |
| 9 | | Sepulchral Curse Crimson Moon Evocations
Awesome, evil OSDM with some doomy riffs included. |
| 10 | | Eccentric Pendulum Perspectiva Invertalis
Weird, off-the-wall death metal with a good mix of dissonance, technicality and brutality. |
| 11 | | Retromorphosis Psalmus Mortis
Can't go wrong with Spawn of Possession's reboot. |
| 12 | | Faithxtractor Loathing & the Noose
Fast, furious, and goosebump-inducing. |
| 13 | | Obscura A Valediction
I'm not a huge fan of their newest album, but I return to this one regularly. |
| 14 | | Mutagenic Host The Diseased Machine
Heavy OSDM with a great sound (and the album art is badass). |
| 15 | | Job For A Cowboy Moon Healer
Can't forget the newest JFAC album! |
| 16 | | Cognitive Abhorrence
I really like the inclusion of the "clean" vocals on a few tracks alongside the brutal/technical sound. |
| 17 | | Vomitrocious Dystopian Elegy: The Last Echoes of Dying Humanity
Some really nasty technical/brutal death metal, Defeated Sanity fans will probably enjoy this one. |
| 18 | | Sijjeel Affiliation of Horrid Containment
Another one for fans of crazy brutal death metal. |
| 19 | | Ripped to Shreds Sanshi
Really awesome death metal with some awesome solos and a ton of grind influence. |
| 20 | | Concrete Winds Concrete Winds
My god this is some disgusting death/black/grind. I love bands that go haywire on the whammy solos. |
| 21 | | Evilyn Mondestrunken
Brutal death metal of some sort? Kind of weird but I love it. |
| 22 | | Deliquesce Cursed With Malevolence
Awesome tech/brutal DM. Lots of crazy start-stop riffing. |
| 23 | | Conglaciation Conglaciation
Some OSDM influence, some dissonance, some brutality, all wrapped up in a compelling package. |
| 24 | | Vile Rites Senescence
Kinda proggy but with plenty of actual momentum in the tracks. |
| 25 | | Defacement Duality
Probably one of my favorites on the list. It's a suffocating album but there's a lot of gold in these hills. Defacement, indeed. |
| 26 | | Regurgitation Excrement Acts of Putrefaction
Another seemingly unknown album that I had to add to the database. Nasty, brutal DM. |
| 27 | | Asystole (USA-NY) Siren To Blight
Excellent brutal DM with some dissonance thrown in. |
| 28 | | Ahtme Mephitic
The album art may dissuade you, but this is some awesome technical death metal. |
| 29 | | Kossuth Necronym
Techdeath from members of Dawn of Dementia and Equipoise. So many noodles. |
| 30 | | Hyperdontia Harvest of Malevolence
Badass OSDM. Probably my favorite release by them. |
| 31 | | Obscene (USA-IN) Agony & Wounds
Another OSDM ripper! |
| 32 | | Olkoth (USA-SC) At the Eye of Chaos
Good grief, this album has some insane drumming. |
| 33 | | Thanatotherion Alienation Manifesto
The production might not be everyone's cup of tea but there are some sick riffs throughout (and the album art is absolutely crazy). |
| 34 | | Analepsy Quiescence
Analepsy really upped their game on this one. Great songwriting, riffing, drumming, etc. |
| 35 | | Majesties Vast Reaches Unclaimed
I don't listen to a ton of death metal in this vein, but they really capture that classic melodeath sound without coming off as cheesy or inauthentic. |
| 36 | | Malignancy ...Discontinued
How many riffs does it take to get to the center of this album? A lot. |
| 37 | | Paroxysm Unit Fragmentation // Stratagem
Chaotic BDM done right. |
| 38 | | Heaving Earth Darkness of God
Really cool and unique riffing and an evil sound/atmosphere. |
| 39 | | Schizogen Spawn of Almighty Essence
Extremely solid tech/brutal DM. |
| 40 | | Deviant Process Nurture
One of my favorite techdeath albums of recent years. There's a lot that can only be uncovered over multiple listens. |
| 41 | | Hateful Set Forever on Me
Not exactly sure how to nail this down, but it sounds great and has a ton of twists and turns. |
| 42 | | Demiurgon The Oblivious Lure
Really good drumming and riffs on this one, very underrated. |
| 43 | | Heresiarch Edifice
Kind of an OSDM/blackened sound, and really well done to boot. |
| 44 | | Warp Chamber Implements of Excruciation
Are there actual lyrics? Who knows, but it sounds sick. |
