05.10.25 Amon Amarth Ranked

Amon Amarth Ranked

been on an amon amarth deep dive, still not entirely sure why I enjoy them so much
12Amon Amarth
The Great Heathen Army

I saw the video for the song "Saxons and Vikings" and prayed to Oden himself for the sweet release of death.
11Amon Amarth
Berserker

Have not listened. Probably sucks.
10Amon Amarth
Deceiver of the Gods

If Surtur Rising was a watered down Twilight of the Thunder Gods, this is a watered down Surtur Rising. The Messiah Marcolin cameo is completely pointless and is the first of many forced crossovers with metal royalty.
9Amon Amarth
Jomsviking

What ultimately harms AA's recent output is the prioritization of creamy guitar leads over the thunderous riffs the band built a career on. Andy Sneap's pristine production style is completely at odds with AA's brutish aesthetic.
8Amon Amarth
The Avenger

The definition of sophomore slump. If the recording process for The Avenger and The Crusher were combined we might have a career highlight, but both are bogged down with filler. It's more apparent on this one because it's so short.
7Amon Amarth
Surtur Rising

AA's post-Twilight albums seem more concerned with maintaining their image of larping around with swords and shields than creative expression. There's good songs if you look for them but the finished result sounds so perfunctory.
6Amon Amarth
With Oden on Our Side

Twilight's sister album. I always found it a bit too pretty for its own good, the melodies leaning more saccharine than triumphant. Not bad but very overrated imo. Asator rules however.
5Amon Amarth
The Crusher

The Crusher and The Avenger sound very rushed by AA standards. The Crusher has more of a creative direction and the closing three songs are some of their best, but it's not essential listening.
4Amon Amarth
Twilight of the Thunder God

AA achieved legend status with this album which in hindsight ensured that their ability to headline festivals would come before any creative ambition. Still a great album and good entry point.
3Amon Amarth
Once Sent from the Golden Hall

There's a sense of ambition here with grand epic songs that's both helped and hindered by the band's lack of experience. The live performance might be the definitive version so check that out if you're not convinced.
2Amon Amarth
Fate of Norns

Versus the World 2, not as strong musically but there's a great sense of storytelling that keeps me coming back.

Versus the World

Kind of a soft reboot for the band after a couple of half-assed albums. Every track has its own identity and there's an adorable "face adversity with the power of friendship" theme throughout.
