My Long Lost Tape Collection - Family Tapes
This list is going to date me. Being old enough for tapes (but too young for 8-tracks and records) - I had my own fairly large collection of cassette tapes. Many of the stores, to which my Mother would take me and my Sister to, had low priced cassette singles; we could get our favorite songs without spending the full album price. And if I did buy the entire album - it was often cheaper than the CD (a new technology at the time) counterpart. These were the family tapes that we listened to in the car, before I started my own collection. |
| 1 | | Alabama The Closer You Get...
The earliest memory of cassette tapes that I have is from the mid 1980's. When my family would make the 3 to 4 hour trek to visit our extended family, we would often be driving in my dad's car. And he had 1 or 2 tapes, this one and Mountain Music. |
| 2 | | Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume I & II (1973 - 1985)
1987/1988. My Mother had taken a new teaching job at a private school in a neighboring City, around 30 min away. She decided that me and my Sister would join her at this School, so we made this roundtrip drive 5 days a week. This was her favorite tape to listen to. |
| 3 | | Richard Marx Richard Marx
On the drives, we listened to the radio a lot. However, we also had a cassette player in our car - and we made use of it; although we didn't have that many tapes early on. This tape got a lot of play; we also had a Richard Marx single for "Endless Summer Nights". |
| 4 | | Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet
At one point in time, my mother was a bit of a rocker - and this tape got a lot of play on the drives. We ended up also buying 7800 Fahrenheit - and funny enough, this tape didn't get much play at all. We hoped to recreate the love of Slippery When Wet with another Bon Jovi tape - but this one was just OK. |
| 5 | | Roxette Look Sharp!
As noted prior, my Sister was also in the car - and she had some of her own favorite tapes. She really liked Roxette - and we had a few cassette singles for "Dangerous" and "It Must Have Been Love" |
| 6 | | Whitney Houston Whitney
My Sister and I both loved "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - so this tape was bought for the car trips - and was a pleaser for us both. |
| 7 | | Billy Joel Storm Front
1989. Still riding with my Mother to school - but I am now in Middle School (with a shorter drive). Still playing a lot of tapes in the car - and I typically sit up front and MC. We had the Cassette Single for "We Didn't Start the Fire". |
| 8 | | The Righteous Brothers Just Once In My Life
My Mother and Sister loved the Ghost soundtrack - had this tape in the car, and I listened to it begrudgingly. Really it was one song, "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers - and a few soundtrack pieces. |
| 9 | | Sinead O'Connor I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Also had this lovely cassette single for "Nothing Compares to You" |
| 10 | | Bette Midler The Rose
and this cassette single as well "From a Distance" by Bette Midler |
| 11 | | Richard Marx Rush Street
By 1992, I was driving myself to school - and my Mother and Sister drove separately. Which was good; I got a lot of rockin' in. I still have some tapes from their car rides (that I wasn't in), including this and the next two tapes. |
| 12 | | Michael Jackson Dangerous
I can say that I never have listened to this tape - but it is a family relict in my collection. As well as a cassette tape single for the song "Will You Be There" |
| 13 | | Ace of Base The Sign
This was one of my Sister's tapes that she bought in 1993. |
