| | DIR EN GREY & KYO RANKED | | 19 | | Sukekiyo Infinitum
The least familiar with this. Still trying to get a grasp on their other work, so this is just ranked on ignorance. | | 18 | | Dir En Grey MISSA
Tbh it’s really good. Way better than anyone will give it credit for. | | 17 | | Sukekiyo Immortalis
I like a few songs on this and can appreciate it for what it is, but it has yet to really stay with me. | | 16 | | Dir En Grey The Marrow of a Bone
A bit underrated. Very balls to the wall and heavy, with some great standout tracks whenever they go for soaring melodies and hooks. | | 15 | | Sukekiyo Adoratio
Such a strange, beautiful album. Has yet to stick with me though, like a lot of their material | | 14 | | Petit Brabancon Seven Garbage Born of Hatred
Another really solid release from this project, great production. Just a bit less exciting than the full length | | 13 | | Dir En Grey Phalaris
A major grower. Doesn’t have the hooks and soaring melodies i want from the band, but it’s deceptively dense and creative. At a first glance it feels uninspired, but i now see it a lot differently | | 12 | | Sukekiyo Erosio
Fuuuuuck this thing is so good. A lot of variety, and the production and arrangements are gorgeous. Especially love the synth pop leaning songs. | | 11 | | Dir En Grey Dum Spiro Spero
Whenever i’m in the mood for this album, it’s an all timer, but i find myself listening to this less than most of their output. Ruten no Tou, Hageshisa, and Lotus are all easily in my top 10 songs by the band though. | | 10 | | Sukekiyo Vitium
This band has taken a lot to grow on me, but they’re getting there. Super unique sound and great songwriting | | 9 | | Dir En Grey The Insulated World
The biggest grower in the band’s discography. It sees the band returning to their roots, with elements from recent albums sprinkled in. Kyo does some insane experimentation with his voice, and it’s a lot of fun to listen to. Even if the production is ass. | | 8 | | Dir En Grey Macabre
Really underrated. It feels like a less fleshed-out version of Kisou. It’s weird, disjointed, and sees the band utilizing more metal elements in the guitars and vocals. Deserves more love | | 7 | | Petit Brabancon Fetish
This has no right being as good as it is. Miya from MUCC (another favorite band of mine) does guitar on this, and he carries that same über-heavy, Korn-like groove over to this band’s sound, and it fits perfectly with Kyo’s Vulgar era vocal sounds. Just a really fun album that didn’t hit at first, but has since become one of my favorite releases of the last few years. | | 6 | | Dir En Grey Vulgar
Iconic, fantastic, fun, heavy. Essential album | | 5 | | Dir En Grey Withering to Death
Holy fuck this album is good. My last ranking had this in last place, and idk why. This not only clicked with me really well but is now one of my favorites. This feels like the precursor to Uroboros more than anything else they did. Take the metalcore-isms of Marrow and slap it on this, and you have Uroboros. Kyo’s vocals really start to shine on this one | | 4 | | Dir En Grey Gauze
Fuck, this is such a phenomenal rock album. So catchy, so fun, so well written and passionate. Yoshiki of X Japan did some arranging and piano on here. One of my favorite bass guitar albums, Cage is so much fun to play, one of the greatest bass songs ever. | | 3 | | Dir En Grey Arche
The band turned their Luna Sea influences up to an 11 on this, while implementing a lot of their older styles into a more atmospheric, progressive metal direction. | | 2 | | Dir En Grey Kisou
Might be their best album, actually. Ultra tight, horrifying lyrics, catchy, super weird and experimental. A highlight for the band, and rock music in general. Truly one of the greatest things i’ve heard | | 1 | | Dir En Grey Uroboros
Still to this day my favorite album of all time. I may prefer the original, raw sounding master of this album. In general i think the original tracklist works much better. Sad that it took so many years to actually listen to this version. I always wrote it off because people would constantly say it’s inferior. I would disagree. It has a lot of different elements from the remaster. | |

01.31.25 | My third time ranking these albums, but i once again have a lot of new thoughts and perspectives on their discography, so i figured i’d throw it out there, and add in Kyo’s other projects to shake it up a bit. | CalculatingInfinity
02.01.25 | Having Fetish over Adoratio is an abomination of an opinion, my lord. | Brabiz
02.01.25 | No way, Fetish is a banger | Pikazilla
02.01.25 | arche too high
dss and sukekiyo too low | Pikazilla
02.01.25 | 1 is def 1 though | Demon of the Fall
02.01.25 | Arche rips you dunderhead
admittedly I don’t understand all of the list / side projects(?) and ting | Brabiz
02.01.25 | Arche too high? That’s wild. Has the band’s best songwriting and performances easily. | Pikazilla
02.01.25 | arche does rip but it ain't top 5 kyo album | GiaNXGX
02.01.25 | excellent, arche is very good | GiaNXGX
02.01.25 | sukekiyo not my cup of tea | Brabiz
02.02.25 | Yeah outside of Vitium and Erosio I haven’t been able to get anything to stick with me. It should because it’s all of my favorite musical elements in one, with my favorite vocalist. But for some reason it’s been hard to get settled into. I’ve tried countless times, too | Brabiz
02.02.25 | Fetish took a bit to grow on me, but at this point I’m listening to it at least once a week. Shit is way better than anyone is giving it credit for | CalculatingInfinity
02.02.25 | @Brabiz: Just watch Persuasio and it'll all stick. I refuse to listen to studio Immortalis/Vitium when that show exists. | Brabiz
02.02.25 | Yeah sure! I’ll check it out. I think MOAN is my most played song of the year, so i’d like to enjoy the band as much as that song.
That’s how i managed to fall in love with Phalaris. I watched a live clip of Oboro, and was like “holy fuck”.
This one specifically. The emotion and intensity of this performance made me reframe the song, and same with the other tracks i watched live. This is probably my favorite live clip of DEG ever

02.02.25 | I should’ve added Unraveling, World of Mercy, Vestige of Scratches, and the other Petit Brabancon EP to this list. Totally missed those when i was making the list | BAT
02.02.25 | original mix of uroboros iiiiis better, definitely a bit compressed mixwise but has a lot more bite especially in it's more chaotic moments. | BallsToTheWall
02.02.25 | Great band, need to invest more time in their discography. | CalculatingInfinity
02.02.25 | @Brabiz: Yeah I saw that show when it dropped, stunning. I can give you a MEGA link which has all Dir and Sukekiyo lives if you want.
Persuasio for me is overall the best thing Kyo has been a part of, so I give it the highest praise.
This list is making me want to finish my Dir/Sukekiyo live ranking I started ages ago, but it's too long for anyone to want to read it. | Brabiz
02.02.25 | “I can give you a MEGA link which has all Dir and Sukekiyo lives if you want.“
That would be phenomenal, thanks
I’m excited to check it out if it’s that good. The Arche Budokan stuff has always been my favorite. The clips of Tousei and Magayasou alone are mind blowing | CalculatingInfinity
02.02.25 | Arche Budokan is my fav show for Dir nowadays; it's basically perfect. Sukekiyo live is a completely different vibe, so be prepared for that.
| Azazzel
04.15.25 | about done listening to all the Dir LPs. what are the other essential tracks and EPs tucked away on various releases, there's a lot to sift through and many LP 'singles' | CalculatingInfinity
04.15.25 | The Unraveling EP is essential, the 15 minute Macabre remake is probably their best song. Missa you can skip tbh, it's not very good.
There's a few single only songs pre Missa but not the most essential material. After Missa, there's only two non-album songs which aren't remakes/remixes of previous songs and both are essential: Fukai and The World of Mercy.
| Brabiz
04.17.25 | Garden off of Missa is essential though, I’d say. Awesome song, and the live video is 10/10 |
