Metal elements ranked

in order of how much I focus on certain parts of a metal album, top is most focus, bottom is least focus. they are all important in some way
1Periphery
Periphery III: Select Difficulty

Vocals/lyrical content (if applicable) - this is not to say I don't love instrumental metal, but when there is a vocalist on hand I like to focus on their vocals and lyrical content.
2August Burns Red
Thrill Seeker (Anniversary)

Drums - before I was ever a singer, I aspired to be a great drummer, and so in comes the most important non-vocal instrument for me. I've always appreciated good, tasteful drumming - not as crazy about stuff like Archspire where it feels crazy for the sake of it, but a great technical drummer can elevate most metal albums.
3Megadeth
Rust In Peace

Bass - often one of the most overlooked instruments, I've always liked how the bass holds everything together and don't love when albums try to mix the bass out, what's the point of recording a bass part if you're going to mix it so low its inaudible?
4Whitechapel
Kin

Lead guitar - a good, soulful guitar solo and leads that add to an atmosphere are great and essential to any metal album for me.
5Bring Me The Horizon
There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It...

Ambient/atmospherics - some people may say this doesn't belong in any metal album, but good atmosphere will always elevate a record for me.
6Voivod
Nothingface

Rhythm guitar/riffs - it being dead last here does not mean they're bad or inessential, but I often find myself drawn to other parts of the puzzle more. An album with good riffs but meh everything else just won't hit for me the same as an album with whatever riffs but great everything else. great all around is ideal.
