| Mix Tape Series - 9
I entered the work force in mid 1999, working at a firm that allowed absolutely no music. Every day felt like hell - and I lasted there only 6 months. In my next job, starting in early 2000, it was much different. Workers were free to listen to what they wanted - as long as they had headphones on. I met many musically minded folks while working here. Two separate work colleagues made mix tapes for me. The first was titled "The Last Mix Tape Ever Made", and included an eclectic mix of James Brown, Sebadoh, Digable Planets, and Powderfinger on the Side A, and bluegrass and jazz songs on Side B; sadly I have lost this tape or I would include it. The second mix tape received by a colleague was called "Gerard's Sampler", which I still have, and is provided below. | | 1 | | The Shamen Boss Drum

01.17.25 | bro we used to tape off the friggin radio man and would get pissed if the DJ was still talking over the beginning or end of a song that you loved! | JDubb
01.17.25 | Yeah, I taped off the radio as well - earlier on. I would eagerly wait to hear the (first indication of the) intros of my favorite songs on the radio - so that I taped the majority of the tracks. | Titan
01.17.25 | we would start recording at the end of a song in anticipation that the one you wanted was coming next......if you were wrong, you simply rewound and did it again lol
but as you mentioned above, it was a special feeling when someone would hand you a mix tape to listen to - it was part of the 'art' of listening to music along with reading all liner notes on a store bought physical copy and analyzing artwork on a gatefold vinyl.... | JDubb
01.17.25 | @Titan, you and I are aligned on that. A mix tape was a great gift - either to give or to receive. | Titan
01.17.25 | yes! my friends were constantly giving me blank tapes because i had a good rack system a decent amount of albums back then.......and when i say a decent amount of albums - 200 was a lot for anyone.......nowadays, folks have 8,000 albums rated! |
