Late to the 2024 party

So I've not really been an active music listener now for about 3 or 4... years... minus a lovely little spell at the start of the year when I briefly commuted by train and I became obsessed with Admiral Angry. I've made a little pact with myself that I'd rather like music to be a bigger part of my life again so here we go - a haphazard, shotgun 2024 catch-up. Recs welcome, chats welcome, tea recommendations welcome. It's nice to be back.

The first machine

Decidedly unsettling dark ambient; sounds like a dungeon synth album eschewing the lead lines for a computer's cries in liminal space. At worst it's a little nondescript, but the better tracks tow the line of spooky and heartbreaking extremely well.

Look How Long Lasting Everything Is Moving Forward

I've shortened my opinion of this to being a delightful amalgam of noise rock and screamo. Looking forward to this becoming a new favourite. There's a real spiteful, punky attitude here alongside some extremely touching (and occasionally twinkly) skramz spleen-vents, and I also enjoy the bitcrushed, noisy percussion and sounds that are utilised throughout.

niconico

Mid-00s joyful indie leads underneath a blizzard of harsh, trebly noise. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet - the effect of the noise is interesting but a little unpleasant at times, like shoegaze recorded on a laptop mic. Some of those leads, though buried, really are lovely though.

Romanticism

Rec from Uzu, thank you :) Hana is a great lyricist with an extremely nicely timbred, mid-low range voice. Indie pop/rock isn't typically my thing, but I could see myself returning to this one. It's a little patchy for me - 22 and Care are particular highlights in the third way slot for now.

Everything wants me to write in cursive

Very cool emoviolence EP. Some lovely drowned skramz, some core breakdowns and, crucially, a ping snare. Far worse ways of spending 7 minutes.
