2024 Top 15
Pengui's top 15 of 2024. It's not just my opinion. It's fact. |
| 15 | | Alkaline Trio Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs
I've grown up on 90s punk but never got into this band other than knowing a couple of their more popular songs. This album was a surprise, pretty enjoyable pop punk. |
| 14 | | Job For A Cowboy Moon Healer
Haven't listened to this for a while but gave a lot of listens earlier in the year and couldn't believe it's the same deathcore band I use to hear. |
| 13 | | Defeated Sanity Chronicles of Lunacy
Solid slab of death metal. |
| 12 | | Ulcerate Cutting the Throat of God
Kiwis are consistent you can give them that. |
| 11 | | Cavalera Conspiracy Schizophrenia
Probably shouldn't be in a best of list but shit, if it was new it would be album of the year. One of the greatest death/thrash albums of all time rerecorded by the real Sepultura. |
| 10 | | Aquilus Bellum II
Brilliant follow up to Bellum I. Stick your headphones on and be taken away for an hour. |
| 9 | | Fleshgod Apocalypse Opera
Without doubt the bands weakest output but still a great record. Endless moments of creativity from the best symphonic metal band only dampened by some cringeworthy vocal passages. |
| 8 | | Bad Astronaut Untethered
Imo, Joey Cape shines brightest with a piano in the background. Some classic tracks here to slow things down. Beautiful record. |
| 7 | | Counterparts Heaven Let Them Die
To me, not comparable to A Eulogy For Those Still Here and not as good. Seems like they are trying to capture the Knocked Loose popularity and this isn't a bad thing, it's better than Knocked Loose' release of this year. |
| 6 | | Speed (AUS) Only One Mode
Maybe a bit of Aussie bias but these guys know how to write a hardcore track that will get everybody moving. They've blown up this year playing sellout shows to venues that hardcore shows have never sold out before in Australia. |
| 5 | | Blood Incantation Absolute Elsewhere
I can see why this will be on most lists number one album of the year. Absolutely stellar release. |
| 4 | | The Cure Songs of a Lost World
Self-explanatory. |
| 3 | | Dvne Voidkind
One of the most under rated bands going around, another stellar release following up to the epic Etemen Aenka. |
| 2 | | Chaser Small Victories
The only band that is able to replicate that perfect 90s skate/pop punk sound of the fat wreck/epitaph bands. Some of the hooks and melodies on this hit the nostalgic nerves and bring a tear to the eye. |
| 1 | | Brodequin Harbinger of Woe
This hit me from the first listen. FIrst and foremost the sheer brutality, relentless speed, perfect guitar tone and hints of melody just come together seamlessly. The premise of the album is also intriguing and the fact that the band hadn't put out a record, never mind one near this good in 20 years puts this at the top of the tree for 2024 for me. |
