12.04.24 | Anode, no not like that. I mean "new music" as in anything I haven't heard yet. There's a LOT of great music out there I've just been overexposing myself and the amount of stimuli gets overwhelming sometimes. I mean I had like like 7 or 8 albums a day I was running through on a backlog and by the time it was over I just was done for the next bit. |
Drifter
12.04.24 | nothing wrong with jamming your favorites for a while. sometimes it happens to me but don’t look at it like a “burnout” cause that makes it a negative thing. the point of music discovery in the first place is to build up your pile of treasure so it’s ok to just indulge in it once in a while :D |
veninblazer
12.04.24 | Aye, fair enough, I was just running through new things left and right with not a lot of time to fixate on the best ones, so revisiting some has been super rewarding. Comforting really. It does feel like burnout bc I have friends still recommending new things and I feel bad pushing them to the side lol |
Drifter
12.04.24 | yeah i’ve traditionally had that problem too where i was speeding through new stuff. primarily to up my rating count but after taking years off of consistent rating i’ve found a nice middle ground where i do like raising that number but i don’t feel like im wasting time by jamming something i’ve already rated. its def super rewarding to look back after the race and look at everything you picked up along the way |

I think this sort of listening block is quite natural. If somebody recommends something to me, I usually just note it and check it out when I feel willing to. |

12.04.24 | Not music related, but since it's a confessional thread, but I'm kinda hooked on sports betting and I think I ought to stop soon before it turns into a real problem. It's not hurting me too much financially, but it's slowly getting there if I keep losing as often as I do. :/ |
Jurtz
12.04.24 | I understand what you mean, sometimes I also feel that no new music can land properly and I also resort to listening to music I'm already familiar with. There is only so much new input that the brain can handle and process properly in a given amount of time. |
jrlikestodance
12.04.24 | I share the same sentiment as 1 as someone who has had many musical "phases". As I progressed through me 20s, I realized its lame to have one genre/subculture define me and my mix of experiences and tastes make me who I am!!! Never be afraid to branch out and don't care about anyone who has negative things to say about expanding your taste! |
Christbait
12.04.24 | "What I want to know is how people always seems to get stuck at the gate with gateway hip hop?"
Personally hip hop has always been a genre of music that I can't connect with emotionally or culturally. I also grew up in white rural areas where hip hop felt like it was appropriated by a bunch of rednecks who only listened to it for the low end without appreciation for the artistic merit.
I don't know...I just remember always thinking that if I tried to listen to hip hop, I was taking up something that was popular in my area without understanding its relevance. Thing is, this same reasoning could be extrapolated to so many other genres of music I don't listen to if I chose to ask myself why. |
artificialbox
12.04.24 | yeah ive long since abandoned any sense of “identity” tied to a music genre. leave that one for the teenagers. |
Jurtz
12.04.24 | People always try to put everything in boxes, it's human behavior. That doesn't mean we have to go along with that, agreed. |
Hyperion1001
12.04.24 | i pretty much only listen to death metal, techno, and ambient at this point. i tried to be adventurous in my youth and there are some albums from other genres that have stuck with me, but i basically have no interest in listening to any music that includes singing or acoustic instrumentation. and im honestly comfortable staying in my lane and sticking to what i know i like
luckily there is still great new music being made in those genres so i always have new stuff to listen to, but im basically not interested in the slightest in where music is going as a whole. |
VicariousIntent
12.04.24 | I relate to this a lot. For me personally I think I was drawn to subcultures like punk and emo partially out of feeling alienated and excluded from so many other parts of the world, so it becoming part of my "identity" was maybe about feeling like I belonged somewhere at last. But at that point it becomes more about the folks you're with than about the music, and that absolutely is limiting. I'm very grateful for my time in those subcultures but maybe it's normal to move on in some ways, idk |

12.04.24 | dont worry venin there's dozens of classic hip hop albums ive never heard. people look at me crazy when i tell them some of the stuff i haven't listened to but the way i look at it is that ive still got classics i haven't heard!! the journey lasts longer that way |
veninblazer
12.04.24 | i think it's mostly just being tired of all the gatekeepers that act like all my musical takes mean nothing because I haven't heard every classic album ever so going out of my way to check them out to get them to shut the hell up lol |
Frippertronics
12.04.24 | when you realize that there's nothing stopping you from listening to whatever you please whenever, that's when you're truly free
gatekeepers are meaningless - they serve a purpose in some contexts, but ultimately, they shouldn't matter to you |
Futures
12.04.24 | def ignore those people, they aren't worth listening to. everyone's music journey is different and different perspectives are valuable as long as you can reasonably explain them. if everyone went on the same path it would suck, just look at people on rym who listen to the charts and treat them as gospel. it's good to have opinions that are uniquely your own. |
veninblazer
12.04.24 | it's just annoying sometimes, I'll post how I feel abt something and get a bunch of people being big babies about it in my mentions whether here or rym. i'll talk about TPAB not being my favorite rap album on the GNX thread and people will call me a poser who "just scours the top sput rap albums" and i'm just like do you guys have recommendations for me or are you just gonna be dicks? |
Frippertronics
12.04.24 | why should that matter though? is *not* being a poser as important to you as much as it is trying to have your own personal journey? |
Frippertronics
12.04.24 | I find inherent value in being pushed in a certain direction, but ultimately, it comes down to you what path you choose to go in. Also, I don't think I'd ever seek out hip hop recommendations from Sputnik honestly lmao |
veninblazer
12.04.24 | it shouldn't matter, i'm just tired of people trying to psychoanalyze me LOL |
Futures
12.04.24 | it's because you play into it lol you gotta ignore it or if you really feel the need tell them why you like the album or whatever. if you make yourself a main character of the site people are always going to come at you, happens to everyone here including myself. |
Frippertronics
12.04.24 | then simply stop indulging them. Another part of the internet that becomes way easier once you come to a mindset of not giving a flying fuck what people think of your taste. Own it. |
veninblazer

i quite recall the both of us butting heads on this but we're talking almost ten years at this point. I think you grow into your niche at a certain point without realizing you have and you find some comfort in it after a while. |

12.04.24 | i probably did haha, the site culture was definitely much more vicious back then with 5 posting lol. just was copying everyone else.
totally agree about finding your niche. |
Frippertronics
12.04.24 | i mean it also doesn't help when it was basically a bunch of teenagers and 20-somethings basically peacocking all over each other, trying far too hard for their own good, so of course it would result in more than enough arguments to fuel a thread on its own. I think that aspect has never left the site throughout the years, but has certainly taken on different forms which is more passive but flares up here and there. |

my criteria factored in whether or not I like the skits too because they are part of the album too which is why ready to die isn't in my 5's, i do NOT like the skit on there, i also prefer the albums that don't waste too much time by trying to fill the entire CD runtime, so Illmatic is kinda a lock |

12.05.24 | It's weird tbh. Most of my hip-hop 5's on RYM are singles, a few albums (Midnight Marauders and Illmatic) but many classic rap albums come close but just have 1-2 things on there that I'm just like "how can I give this a 5 if this is here?" lol. Like I loved a loooot of Ready to Die but I did not need to hear Biggie having sex in the middle of the album lol 95% of rap "skits" are annoying to me and this ABSOLUTELY includes most Eminem skits
Three Six is sick I just found the production on Mystic Stylez a bit...samey-sounding? And it being 72 minutes amplified that. mayb I'll like later albums more. |

12.05.24 | venin the "samey" thing is something i struggled with in east coast hip hop for a long time but it really just takes some time investment to break through those barriers sometimes. but even on an individual album basis i understand feeling that about mystic stylez but it's the same situation |
veninblazer
12.05.24 | yeah that's fair, i very likely just need to spend more time with it. i do know i feel that the instrumentals of Tribe are some of the best I've heard in the genre and more beats like that will likely get me. |
