There's a LOT of great music out there I've just been overexposing myself and the amount of stimuli gets overwhelming sometimes. I mean I had like like 7 or 8 albums a day I was running through on a backlog and by the time it was over I just was done for the next bit.
Drifter 12.04.24	nothing wrong with jamming your favorites for a while. sometimes it happens to me but don’t look at it like a “burnout” cause that makes it a negative thing. the point of music discovery in the first place is to build up your pile of treasure so it’s ok to just indulge in it once in a while :D

Comforting really. It does feel like burnout bc I have friends still recommending new things and I feel bad pushing them to the side lol
Drifter 12.04.24	yeah i’ve traditionally had that problem too where i was speeding through new stuff. primarily to up my rating count but after taking years off of consistent rating i’ve found a nice middle ground where i do like raising that number but i don’t feel like im wasting time by jamming something i’ve already rated. its def super rewarding to look back after the race and look at everything you picked up along the way

arthropod 12.04.24	"have friends still recommending new things and I feel bad pushing them to the side" I think this sort of listening block is quite natural. If somebody recommends something to me, I usually just note it and check it out when I feel willing to.
Krpa 12.04.24	Not music related, but since it's a confessional thread, but I'm kinda hooked on sports betting and I think I ought to stop soon before it turns into a real problem. It's not hurting me too much financially, but it's slowly getting there if I keep losing as often as I do. :/

As I progressed through me 20s, I realized its lame to have one genre/subculture define me and my mix of experiences and tastes make me who I am!!! Never be afraid to branch out and don't care about anyone who has negative things to say about expanding your taste!

Personally hip hop has always been a genre of music that I can't connect with emotionally or culturally. I also grew up in white rural areas where hip hop felt like it was appropriated by a bunch of rednecks who only listened to it for the low end without appreciation for the artistic merit. I don't know...I just remember always thinking that if I tried to listen to hip hop, I was taking up something that was popular in my area without understanding its relevance. Thing is, this same reasoning could be extrapolated to so many other genres of music I don't listen to if I chose to ask myself why.

Hyperion1001 12.04.24	i pretty much only listen to death metal, techno, and ambient at this point. i tried to be adventurous in my youth and there are some albums from other genres that have stuck with me, but i basically have no interest in listening to any music that includes singing or acoustic instrumentation. and im honestly comfortable staying in my lane and sticking to what i know i like luckily there is still great new music being made in those genres so i always have new stuff to listen to, but im basically not interested in the slightest in where music is going as a whole.
VicariousIntent 12.04.24	I relate to this a lot. For me personally I think I was drawn to subcultures like punk and emo partially out of feeling alienated and excluded from so many other parts of the world, so it becoming part of my "identity" was maybe about feeling like I belonged somewhere at last. But at that point it becomes more about the folks you're with than about the music, and that absolutely is limiting. I'm very grateful for my time in those subcultures but maybe it's normal to move on in some ways, idk

I think you grow into your niche at a certain point without realizing you have and you find some comfort in it after a while.

Frippertronics 12.04.24	i mean it also doesn't help when it was basically a bunch of teenagers and 20-somethings basically peacocking all over each other, trying far too hard for their own good, so of course it would result in more than enough arguments to fuel a thread on its own. I think that aspect has never left the site throughout the years, but has certainly taken on different forms which is more passive but flares up here and there.

Most of my hip-hop 5's on RYM are singles, a few albums (Midnight Marauders and Illmatic) but many classic rap albums come close but just have 1-2 things on there that I'm just like "how can I give this a 5 if this is here?" lol. Like I loved a loooot of Ready to Die but I did not need to hear Biggie having sex in the middle of the album lol 95% of rap "skits" are annoying to me and this ABSOLUTELY includes most Eminem skits Three Six is sick I just found the production on Mystic Stylez a bit...samey-sounding? And it being 72 minutes amplified that. mayb I'll like later albums more.
