| Tindersticks ranked 2024 update...
My boys have done it again and dropped another beauty. | | 1 | | Tindersticks Tindersticks
Album Rating: 5
The album before they found their signature sound you could say, so possibly a strange choice for top spot - but this is their most diverse listen and is rammed full of classics.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Blood
- City Sickness
- Patchwork
- Marbles
- Jism | | 2 | | Tindersticks Tindersticks II
Album Rating: 5
A whisker behind the debut is the follow up and this time we do see the band develop their signature nocturnal inky black sound.
Tindersticks Classics:
- A Night In
- My Sister
- Travelling Light
- She's Gone | | 3 | | Tindersticks Curtains
Album Rating: 5
Mostly repeats the formula of the second album but still finds it's own personality, which shows how the longevity of this band's music would work out. Tweaks to the formula are all that's required...
Tindersticks Classics:
- Another Night In
- Dick's Slow Song
- Let's Pretend
- Buried Bones | | 4 | | Tindersticks Waiting for the Moon
Album Rating: 4.5
Controversial I know, the critics, the fans, even the band themselves don't hold this one in particularly high regard. Just a minute though - just how incredible are the best six songs on this one? No duffers to report either, even the abrasive '4:48 Psychosis' is ok enough. Dickon Hinchcliffe left after this album but takes lead vocals on a couple of the best songs here (two I rate as classics) and I actually welcome the change, he's got a nice intimacy to his more subtle vocals.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Until the Morning Comes
- Sweet Memory
- My Oblivion | | 5 | | Tindersticks Simple Pleasures
Album Rating: 4.5
The fourth Tindersticks did go in quite an obvious new direction, this is much closer to pop and soul, but again it works very well thank you. Timeless, (You Take) This Heart of Mine has slowly become a top five 'Sticks song for me...
Tindersticks Classics:
- If You're Looking for a Way Out
- (You Take) This Heart of Mine | | 6 | | Tindersticks Soft Tissue
Album Rating: 4.5
The new one and in some ways the sister release to 'Simple Pleasures' - similar style, similar consistency. They should have covered a pop/soul standard on this one too though, would have been a great callback.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Don't Walk, Run
- Always a Stranger | | 7 | | Tindersticks The Waiting Room
Album Rating: 4
I dismissed this somewhat at first, check my review on this very site - as ever, their albums grow on you, day be day, year on year. Very arty, very euro sophisticated, so it leans in on that element of the band's style.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Second Chance Man
- How he Entered | | 8 | | Tindersticks No Treasure but Hope
Album Rating: 4
This recent one really isn't so far behind 'Soft Tissue', a bit more varied in quality and style but it hangs together well all the same. Could have done with more standout tracks.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Trees Fall | | 9 | | Tindersticks The Something Rain
Album Rating: 4
'Chocolate' is a bloody odd way to kick things off but you have to respect it. Some of the remaining material ranks as their most mesmeric and groovy ever. It's more about the vibe here.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Slippin' Shoes | | 10 | | Tindersticks Can Our Love
Album Rating: 4
The one I've spent the least time with but it still rules - a continuation of 'Simple Pleasures' but they're also trying to branch out from that starting point.
Tindersticks Classics:
- Dying Slowly
- People Keep Comin' Around | | 11 | | Tindersticks The Hungry Saw
Album Rating: 4
A strange one in that the best three songs are probably the closing three. Lots of curveballs and experiments on this one, probably to its detriment overall, but again, you have to respect it - nothing goes totally wrong, nothing stinks, so all good.
Tindersticks Classics:
- The Turns We Took | | 12 | | Tindersticks Falling Down a Mountain
Album Rating: 3.5
Their weakest conventional album for sure, 'Distractions' I'm not sure I really see as a regular Tindersticks album...maybe I should. Anyway, again a bit like with 'Something Rain' this one is more 'a vibe' only this one is a little low on great song writing. There's no classic Tindersticks song here, which makes me sad. | | 13 | | Tindersticks Distractions
Album Rating: 3.5
Not sure what to make of this, we have cover versions, long experimental mood pieces, and songs sung in French. It's like all the parts of the Tindersticks approach that most piss people off put together! Still, it sounds mostly lovely so whatever :/ | | 14 | | Stuart A. Staples Leaving Songs
Album Rating: 3.5
Little bonus round thing of mopping up some other releases associated with the band - this solo release from lead singer Stuart Staples is worth a go. More stripped down approach to his song writing and vocals, it's very consistent though.
'Tindersticks' Classics:
- That Leaving Feeling | | 15 | | Stuart A. Staples Lucky Dog Recordings 03-04
Album Rating: 3.5
Decent selection of tracks from Staples again. | | 16 | | Stuart A. Staples Arrhythmia
Album Rating: 3
Side A is worth a go, Side B is...Side B. I reviewed this album here anyway. | | 17 | | Tindersticks Live At The Bloomsbury Theatre
Album Rating: 4.5
Their best live recording and an essential once you're familiar with their early material. | | 18 | | Tindersticks Coliseu dos Recreios de Lisboa, October 30th 2001
Album Rating: 4
This one is top stuff too. | | 19 | | Tindersticks 8th Feb 94 Amsterdam
Album Rating:
Really early performance, predictably excellent. | | 20 | | Tindersticks San Sebastian 2012
Album Rating: 4
If you love 'The Something Rain' then this is essential. | |

09.28.24 | In response to a few people here digging the new album I bring you...fire | gabba
09.28.24 | Nice, can’t wait to hear the new one! Got tickets for November, I should get myself prepared! | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | nice gabba, you definitely should, top class album
loved catching Tindersticks live, classy as fuck | zakalwe
09.28.24 | I really like 9
3 and 2 are interchangeable as their best and 7 also has to be considered.
New album is top drawer.
Great band.
| DoofDoof
09.28.24 | Is 1 too student-y or poncy for your tastes Zak?
If you reduced all their albums to 8 songs it'd be the best one...Whisky & Water, Blood, City Sickness, Patchwork, Marbles, Jism, Drunk Tank, The Not Knowing.
That's impeccable stuff, just listen to those songs on repeat for a year or so ;P | zakalwe
09.28.24 | Just not as seduced by it as the others which are sleazy 1 is gropey. | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | 1 is the most disturbed true.
It's a little in thrall of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at times is my only real tiny issue with it. It's better than any Nick Cave at the final reckoning so steal from the best and all that.
It's definitely their 'indie'est' that's for sure. | zakalwe
09.28.24 | How have you not got Pretty Words as classic?
Buried Bones is probably the bands best. Fucking love Curtains haven’t heard it in some time though. | gabba
09.28.24 | 3 is my favorite, and I’d take the debut over the follow-up | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | zak - I'll go back to 'Pretty Words' and check - every year another Tindersticks tune comes out of nowhere to rule my listening so that one could be next up. EDIT: yeah, it's still a great one but not going to get me like 'You take this heart of mine' I don't think, which is a bit more 'different' to any other of their songs.
gabba - any of the first three is a respectable pick for the number one spot. | zakalwe
09.28.24 | Extensive.
What a lad. | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | Maybe leaving their most famous tune Tiny Tears off as a classic is a bit edgy | zakalwe
09.28.24 | The Vic Reeves staple | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | ha, it is the most Staples-y of them all | Gyromania
09.28.24 | Rly good stuff, we agree on a lot when it comes to this band, including favourite tracks, as I also have (basically) the same favourites from their new one, the debut Can Our Love, Something Rain (album that got me into these guys when it released), No Treasure, and Simple Pleasures. I should rly listen to II and Curtains | Gyromania
09.28.24 | Oh and we agree about The Waiting Room. Second Chance Man is so fucking good, maybe a too 5 Tindersticks track for me. Top 10 at least | Winesburgohio
09.28.24 | i don't know them well but the stuff they did for Claire Denis on 35 rhums and nénette et boni is quite spectacular. i gather there's a compilation of those and 3 other of her films out there that i'll obtain some rainy day
| DoofDoof
09.28.24 | Gyro - II and Curtains I think you'll probably prefer to the debut so get on them soon
Winesburg - their soundtrack work is decent too yeah, 'Trouble Every Day' is prob my favourite of those | Butkuiss
09.28.24 | 3 is 1 doe | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | I'm a bit surprised that's the consensus here but I get it.
For me the highs are a shade lower than on the first two...but it maybe has less of the overly arty fluff on it so that might make it a better start to finish'er | zakalwe
09.28.24 | I went out earlier for a walk and as a result of this list I stuck Curtains on.
Fresh crisp air, not a cloud in the sky, few leaves and conkers on the ground, someone had stuck a beef joint on which wafted down the street and smelt the absolute bollocks.
Perfect.
| DoofDoof
09.28.24 | Conkers have dominated my life the last few weeks with the kid, though she always reverts to calling them acorns much to my disappointment each time :D
Tindersticks are surely the greatest band of walking round the neighbourhood acknowledging the usual regular 'characters', imagining who inhabits the run down looking bedsits and flats in the area, and then while all this is going on in your head tripping slightly on an uneven paving slab or two and cursing your existence momentarily.
They're mostly autumnal but then they have that European thing that makes me want to be abroad somewhere coastal for maximum daytime effect. | zakalwe
09.28.24 | Haha bless her.
As for the album I also forgot it has ‘The Fast One’ on it. Stinker. | DoofDoof
09.28.24 | Listening now, yes that's maybe the worst on the first three albums.
'Paco de Renaldo's on the debut isn't as bad but I always felt just included to fill up that third vinyl.
Not sure all the instrumentals were needed on Tindersticks II. | Butkuiss
09.29.24 | IM A TIIIIRED HUNGRY BEARRRR | Icebloom
09.29.24 | Just been discovering these guys last month with the s/t debut. Great album, though a bit uneven; I've mostly been listening to the stretch from 'Blood' to 'Raindrops' (e.g. only half of it). Eager to check out the rest of their discog. | DoofDoof
09.29.24 | Icebloom - that makes total sense, that’s definitely the best stretch of the album
You can’t really go wrong with the rest of the discog | zakalwe
09.29.24 | For a top 5 I’m going.
1. Curtains
2. II
3. The Something Rain
4. Simple Pleasure
5. Soft Tissue
Curtains and II are both classics. The new one is a belter.
| gabba
09.29.24 | Love to see the love for The Something Rain. Gave it two spins yesterday, it’s incredible. Should check San Sebastian live. | DoofDoof
09.29.24 | 'Chocolate' just dominates a bit in my considerations, it is usually a skip track if you just want to listen to the album. Maybe I should place it above 'No Treasure'...I'd rate them really close together anyway.
The live versions are great, a great band for live albums - I guess a great band for soundtrack work too though I have to admit most of their soundtrack stuff I find just ok.
Some of the vocal tracks off the soundtracks are amazing though, the 'Trouble Every Day' t/t and 'Put Your Love in Me' in particular. | zakalwe
09.29.24 | Chocolate as a single piece still has the seduction factor. Then once it’s out the way a top drawer album remains.
Love it. | DoofDoof
09.29.24 | 2012...the mother of all breakups in January...
...the 21st of February and Lambchop release 'Mr. M' AND Tindersticks release 'The Something Rain', back on the mend :D |
