The Mars Volta Ranked
7The Mars Volta
The Mars Volta

Tbh this album does nothing for me. It’s not bad persay, but it lacks the memorability of even their worst material. It feels sedated and on rails.

Edit: I take it back, this is a really fun, lush album that makes up for its lack of experimentation with some great melodies and fun rhythms
6The Mars Volta
Octahedron

Some tracks here don’t engage me as much as others, but i think it has some great standouts, and the airy, light vibe of the album fits surprisingly well. I was surprised by how much i enjoyed this upon revisiting
5The Mars Volta
Amputechture

This one is only so low because it’s one i’m not as familiar with. Potentially their most inaccessible release, it follows the prog maximalism of Frances The Mute and pushes it further in some aspects. I feel it’s a bit less catchy at times, and whenever i listen, it washes over me. I can see this growing on me over time though

Edit: Tetragrammaton is one of the band’s best tracks, yet it feels a bit disjointed at times. Doesn’t have the same flow of Frances, and tracks like Day of The Baphomet are mind melting. Killer album for sure, though could use some cohesion to its parts overall
4The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

Easily their most underrated. This was my introduction to the band, and was my sole exposure to them for quite awhile. I had this thing blasting nonstop when it came out, the über creepy atmosphere and catchy songwriting made it an earworm that i’ll always have a soft spot for. Even for The Mars Volta, there isn’t anything else that sounds like this.
3The Mars Volta
De-Loused in the Comatorium

The classic, and for most fans, their #1. For good reason, too. This thing is monumental and groundbreaking, and it’s impressive to see a band come out of the gates with something this dense and full of personality. It’s also pretty damn catchy.
2The Mars Volta
The Bedlam in Goliath

My underdog pick. One of their most underrated albums, it’s fucking weird and chaotic, and the story behind the album’s recording is fittingly unnerving, and gives the album an air of creepiness.
1The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute

A bit of a no-brainer. Imo the greatest modern prog album. There is truly nothing else that sounds like this. It’s bizarre and terrifying, and manages to be catchy within massive, sprawling textured tracks that span 20+ minutes. I always listen to this via a fan reconstruction, which adds the sadly omitted title track. Essential listening.
