05.28.24 | I was cleaning out this brick outhouse at the end of our garden, the old fella who lived (and died) in this house before we bought it used it as a real work station thing, so I guess up to now it's been a bit of a 'living museum' and out of a sort of respect we left it mostly how we found it. Been here nearly ten years now, the time has come and we need more storage too, so I did the works, put on a face mask (lots of old rat poisons, mouse droppings, etc) on a hot Saturday, and just worked through the whole thing over about four or five hours. The whole time I just listened to John Martyn albums and it was just such an enjoyable experience...and I thought 'just playing one artist all day is sometimes what I want', I think it's a really natural way for me to listen to a band I want to get to know more these days, can imagine me feeling like that four or five days a month maybe. Anyway, we'll try this approach hmmm. |
zakalwe
05.28.24 | I’m with ya doof.
Makes it an experience, more memorable. A greater appreciation and stronger connection is formed.
|
DadKungFu
05.28.24 | You picked a great artist to start off with, looking forward to this |
DoofDoof
05.28.24 | Cheers Zak, yeah I think this is how I like my listening now. Enjoy newly released stuff but I’m also aware that the other year I got into the legacy acts Richard Thompson, The Church and Jackie Leven after focusing on them and they’ve become all timer bands for me. The way I was going about listening to older stuff wasn’t quite working this year, wasn’t getting that connection. |
DoofDoof
05.28.24 | DadKF - he’s one of those I’d parked for years and years, liked what I’d heard but also it didn’t quite stand out. Now I'm blown away, I think getting into Ben Howard’s new style has helped me instantly vibe with John Martyn’s sound, he was obviously a huge influence on BH. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.28.24 | 1 rocks and is way overlooked by oldworld daytrippers. lowkey the best guitarist of his folk generation? |
DoofDoof
05.28.24 | Johnny - I’m impressed so far, obviously you have Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, etc as peers but he could land higher, I like where he heads next from this more traditional folk style. I think he suffers during the ‘80s like most established acts did then but hopefully I’ll try some of that output too. |
Mort.
05.28.24 | the balance of project/free listening is something im constantly striving for and have always struggled with. I cant deal with total freedom, i get choice paralysis. But concrete 'projects' often feel stifling after a few albums
On the other hand, John Martyn is amazing. Ive only heard Solid Hair and Inside Out. If Bless The Weather is as good as everyone says then it appears he had a very strong 3 album run |
Sunnyvale
05.28.24 | I've heard Bless The Weather, Solid Air, and Inside Out - Bless The Weather might be my favorite. Great artist! |
DoofDoof
05.29.24 | Mort - definitely get to Bless the Weather, if you dig Nick Drake at all then that's an essential.
Sunny - so far it's my favourite too, Head and Heart maybe my top song by him |
Butkuiss
05.29.24 | After a decade of trying to focus my listening around new releases/“staying current” I’ve switched tack and spent most of this year doing discog dives on legacy artists and honestly? It’s brought back a lot of my sense of joy when it comes to music. Keeping up with everything felt like such a chore, but having time to really sit with artists has been hugely enjoyable.
I’ve got a newfound appreciation for the artists I’ve been spending time with too. It’s rad as balls. I’ve got nothing to say about John Martyn — but this might be a prompt to add him to rotation. Cheers! |
Hawks
05.29.24 | Man its so hard to balance new stuff with classics or just overlooked gems. I never have been able to find the "right" way tbh I kinda just listen to what my mood suits at that moment lol. |
DoofDoof
07.02.24 | Was planning on covering Crowded House but...not feeling it. Need to do justice to Uncle Tupelo, now is the time. |
DoofDoof
07.28.24 | Redd Kross up next as I'm enjoying their new one from this year. |
DoofDoof
09.01.24 | Killing Joke up next, one of those bands I enjoy but feel should be a 'special' band for me but haven't quite had the breakthrough... |
DadKungFu
09.01.24 | Killing Joke are such a pure band hell yeah |
MillionDead
09.01.24 | I ran almost their whole discog last year. Stellar fucking group. So brutal and metal-like for a post punk band, actually. |
DoofDoof
09.02.24 | Cheers yeah, I know most of their albums, but I only know the debut really well. |
DoofDoof
09.26.24 | Struggling to get through the entire KJ discog but I'm reasonably happy rating those ones, esp the top two and of course the debut.
Want to bump the rating for Night Time but I find the weaker songs sound 100% like pointless retreads of the good ones, makes it a dull listen for me. I'll keep going with it.... |
Gyromania
09.26.24 | Extemities, Dirt... is easily best KJ. I rly think Pandemonium is dogshit by comparison tho |
artificialbox
09.26.24 | my dad played drums on the first Red Kross EP |
DoofDoof
09.26.24 | 'my dad played drums on the first Red Kross EP'
arti - he should have hung on in there, good band!
'I rly think Pandemonium is dogshit by comparison tho'
Gyro, surprisingly different sounds considering near each other for release dates, Pandemonium is my second favourite, maybe their best metal'ish one and Extrmities their best 'industrial, heavy, still informed by post punk' one.
The debut is nearly a 4 rating but it's a little insubstancial, doesn't have the room for a couple of close to filler songs (they're there)
|
Lasssie
09.26.24 | John Martyn is goated |
DoofDoof
10.01.24 | Up next is Richard Hawley, good autumn music |
DoofDoof
10.09.24 | We're getting there, hoping I can bump one of Hawley's to a 5 but we at least have a 4.5 |
DoofDoof
10.16.24 | Making some progress with Hawley, really sinking into his atmosphere now, incredibly consistent albums so far.... |
DoofDoof
11.04.24 | Gone for a small discog next in Social D....my holiday killed the Hawley exploration so I'm extending that two weeks into November and will build up the Mike Ness boys toward the end of the month. |
Gyromania
11.05.24 | i love this idea of going through these legacy bands' discogs. it's kind of my original intention with doing the david bowie discog run: an incentive to get into some of these legendary artists i've never rly tried out before. it takes me so long to go through and fully digest a discog though. like killing joke took me ages to get through, and more recently, the flaming lips, which i still haven't quite finished despite hearing most of their body of work numerous times |
DoofDoof
11.05.24 | Gyro, Flaming Lips and Killing Joke are two I feel you on, as you can see from this very list I didn't manage to revisit and cement opinions on over half the KJ discog.
Other ones I can never quite do justice to despite many many attempts are Leonard Cohen and The Fall...they both might yet feature on this list sometime down the line. |
DoofDoof
12.02.24 | Here we go again...I managed to finish Hawley and do some justice to Social D in November. Now for a band who've released one of the best albums in 2024 that no one is really talking about...
..Little Kid innit |
theBoneyKing
12.02.24 | Love the straight 4s for Uncle Tupelo, a very 4/5 band indeed |
DoofDoof
12.02.24 | Boney they didn’t all used to sit on a 4 for me but after multi plays that’s the exact correct rating for all of them I now think |
theBoneyKing
12.02.24 | Still Feel Gone I go a bit back and forth between 3.5 and 4 but the rest are very solidly 4s |
DoofDoof
01.31.25 | Moving on from Donovan to the excellent James Blackshaw next.... |
theBoneyKing
01.31.25 | Nice nice re: Blackshaw! |
DoofDoof
03.03.25 | Blackshaw, done a bit more delving, still a way to go, but those are relatively confident scores. Might carry on playing some of his stuff into March...
...but then I've also gone for a time consuming one in the Kate Bush discog!
April I'm on holiday for half the month so it'll be a small discog for that month. |
budgie
03.03.25 | hail satan |
DoofDoof
03.03.25 | budgie if you had one pick of budgie-approved discog for me what am I getting? |
budgie
03.03.25 | hail satan yes, i'm gonna say loma or madeline kenney, they're both folksyish enough to be well within your territory and both of their discographies are 4+ across the board for me |
budgie
03.03.25 | i have now seen that you have likewise 4+'d loma across the board so madeline kenney is my suggestion |
AsleepInTheBack
03.03.25 | Finding that balance between unstructured music exploration and project focused listening is something I’m struggling with atm too
Projects goals etc does seem to make the process feel more productive and meaningful
Just a challenge not to make the constraints of the project kill the joy of it all |
DoofDoof
03.03.25 | Madeline Kenney before the year is out then, four album discog...maybe May or June |
budgie
03.03.25 | have fun bro its good tunes |
DoofDoof
03.03.25 | 'Finding that balance between unstructured music exploration and project focused listening is something I’m struggling with atm too'
Yeah, is a three way tug of war for me between new releases, new exploration of older discogs, and then returning to stuff I know well from before.
This year seems ok so far, a bit more skewed to new releases than I'd ideally want....but that's because I think the new releases are actually real good. So that's a bit of a bullshit complaint! |
DoofDoof
03.04.25 | Change of plan, parking Kate Bush for when I have the attention...enjoying the latest Doves album and already naturally being drawn to the back catalogue so seems the best bet for March. |
zakalwe
03.04.25 | Good lad.
Thought Lost Souls was shite when it came out but over the years it’s an all time fave. |
Hawks
03.04.25 | I love this list Doofster. And I love you. And I might steal this idea cause its so awesome. |
DoofDoof
03.04.25 | Hawks - I thought our love was unspoken but there it is, authentic menly love out in the open, and yeah this is a non-stressful list for me, not too much effort and pressure, which just means I will stick with it a long time.
Zak - the new Doves snagged me, Butterfly House and Last Year’s Man are up there among their best.
|
Hawks
03.04.25 | Oh its out in the open for sure!! And yeah bro I think this will be a good way for me to finally jam discogs at my own pace. I always feel rushed then I usually abandon at some point for something else. Viscious cycle lol. |
DoofDoof
03.31.25 | Doves month was gooooood, started with one 4 out of 5 rating and have come out the other side with four of them.
On Easter holidays next couple of weeks so needed something light and frothy for April....feeling some suicidal tendencies? You got it. |
brickhed
03.31.25 | suicidal tendencies is a very solid pick for the month |
DoofDoof
05.01.25 | Suicidal Tendencies was a perfect gym soundtrack for April, didn't listen too much outside that context!
Moving on to one I've put off for so long, but the time has come. |
DoofDoof
06.03.25 | Ran out of time a bit with Underworld so will be keeping them in rotation but onwards.
A recent new discovery 'band' are up next....Songs of a Green Pheasant, some psychedelic/experimental folk. |
DoofDoof
07.01.25 | Just checked the Spotify Songs of Green Pheasant albums plus the new one on Bandcamp - enjoyable project, might check the rest of his Bandcamp discog at some stage.
Moving on to The Young Gods next, their new album is one of 2025's best so far, so time to delve a bit deeper with the Swiss industrialists... |
gabba
07.01.25 | Didn’t know The Young Gods have a new album out, good to know! I’ve been barely scratching the surface with this band, but what I’ve heard so far was great. |
DoofDoof
07.01.25 | gabba - I liked the previous new album to this one too, but the latest is more of a typical Young Gods album in the TV Sky/Only Heaven sort of style, whereas the one before was more atmospheric/ambient at times |
gabba
07.01.25 | Sounds cool, will check (and also keep an eye on your ratings). |
DoofDoof
07.31.25 | Young Gods was a good month...yes slightly same'y but their sleek/slick liquid industrial ambient rock is unique enough I guess it doesn't really matter.
Slightly weird I couldn't bump their most respected ('L'eau Rouge') to a 4 considering I have so many of their others sitting on a 4...but that album's Foetus vibe doesn't quite hit for me.
Onwards...Warrior Soul...quite like this lot, don't know much about them and definitely some gaps in what I've heard in their discog. |
zakalwe
07.31.25 | Good to see ya back doof |
Hawks
07.31.25 | DOOF LIVES. |
DoofDoof
08.01.25 | Cheers chaps! I've been around, only posting a few times a week at the moment.
New releases are a bit quiet right now. |
DoofDoof
09.01.25 | Warrior Soul completed near enough, bit same'y as a discog and sort of a guilty pleasure/laughable band...but it was enjoyable.
Now into the land of hippity hop if you believe it or not. |
zakalwe
09.01.25 | This is very respectable Doof mate. |
DoofDoof
09.01.25 | Cheers zak, what's the best Tribe album do you think? |
DoofDoof
10.01.25 | Ran out of steam a bit with Tribe, didn't revisit 'People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm' so I might still go back to that one soon. Couldn't lift any ratings above the 4, still more an enjoyable listen that necessarily blowing my mind.
Onwards to Teenage Fanclub...a band who seem to attract the devotion the tongue in cheek name implies. |
zakalwe
10.01.25 | Best Tribe for me is We Got It From Here
Loved Teenage Fanclub back in the day.
I still have ‘Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From’ as one of the greatest songs of all time.
They have done some absolute classics . |
DoofDoof
10.01.25 | Yeah zak, really looking forward to this month, a few people I chat to on LastFM I notice 'the Fannies' are one of their most played bands.
I'll definitely go back to 'People's Instinctive...' on that recommendation. |
DoofDoof
11.01.25 | Ran out of time a bit last month as I went on holiday for two weeks and I didn't play any Teenage Fanclub the whole trip for whatever reason. One of those weird cases where I dig the sound/style of Bandwagonesque the most out of all their output...but I still think Grand Prix is overall a shade stronger as a full album.
Next...has to be a metal band...one I knew but didn't do justice to in my youth...I toyed with Napalm Death and Corrosion of Conformity....but I settled on Entombed. See how we go... |
zakalwe
11.01.25 | Quality Doof |
DoofDoof
11.01.25 | Up the Spurs mate |
Gyromania
11.03.25 | you're a beast, doof. love these lists |
DoofDoof
12.01.25 | Entombed was a classic 'game of two halves' - the first two death metal albums suit them the best I feel, but I can get behind the 'death n roll' stuff too even if it gets a bit same'y and throwaway once you get beyond 'Wolverine Blues'.
Next up are The Cult who I've tried to get into a couple of times before but will try and do justice to them this time... |
Hawks
12.01.25 | Entombed, NICE. |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.01.25 | Been observing this for a while from a far and have concluded that this is a really fucking good idea, Doof. I've spent recent years flailing about in myriad directions simultanesouly and have only retained a fraction of it. |
Hawks
12.01.25 | SAME!!! I wanna do this same thing lol. Doof is the man. |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.01.25 | Hawks man, you and I are the worst for creating and never finishing lists. |
Hawks
12.01.25 | Yes we are, but I'm gonna try again lmao. Its not easy to do, I give Doof credit. Though a month should be plenty of time to jam a discog lmao. Gonna try to stick to it and stick to metal bands that I've been meaning to check so its less overwhelming. Also should be able to finish my bm list with one album per day. Not much to ask tbh haha. |
DoofDoof
12.01.25 | BitterJ - thanks, it's been the right choice for me now, I used to try more ambitious projects but I just don't have the focus any more, having one band to return to through the month just gives it this underlying flavour. Not forcing myself to do the whole discog is better too because if a band fell off you end up listening to loads of mid tier stuff. |
DoofDoof
12.01.25 | Hawks - seems like you have at least a couple of listening projects running at any one time anyway ;D |
Hawks
12.01.25 | Got two going atm including the discog one lol. Like I said though, a month should be plenty to jam a whole discog if its a number of albums within reason lol. |
DoofDoof
12.01.25 | Yeah, the idea is not to just check the whole discog and then not return for repeat plays but to really get to know the band's music - so their best album I'll maybe listen to up to 10 times, but an average album by them maybe just one or two plays, but no problem skipping their worst regarded album or whatever. |
Hawks
12.01.25 | Hell yeah, thats exactly what I plan to do bro. Starting off with Dark Fortress. Eight albums and I've been meaning to jam them for years. I'm gonna try to keep them between 8-10 albums max. |
DoofDoof
12.01.25 | This is the way men |
Hawks
12.01.25 | You're the best Doofster!!! |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.01.25 | I may kick off my focused approach with The Sea and Cake. |
Hawks
12.01.25 | Jalapeno bro, join me in stealing Doof's idea!!! |
