I genuinely am biased against things that remind me of my past in negative ways and that's no fault of the music itself / may only be tenuously linked by my own perception

FrozenFirebug 11.16.23	i face a hurdle when gauging the quality of guitar music, where, invariably, i feel that if it doesn't at least somewhat sound like wes borland, it's trash i've tried to broaden my horizons (lower my standards) but the poorly contextualized filler riffs with boring tone in 99.9% of metal don't do it for me inversely if the guitar vaguely sounds like wes borland i'm probably gonna rate the album 0.5 higher than it deserves

Demon of the Fall 11.16.23	'I am biased against lps over an hour long' yeah maybe anything that makes it harder to listen to something in full is often unwelcome, I suppose some of my favourite albums are rather lengthy, but the barrier to entry for new stuff is certainly greater same with anything I can't easily access
ArsMoriendi 11.16.23	@Demon: hmmm I guess I’m biased against guttural vocals, or I guess when I listen to sad music I’m biased towards more resigned/despondent vocals as opposed to very expressive whiny crying vocals. Quiet sadness vs loud sadness I guess?
Demon of the Fall 11.16.23	I might be biased against 'happy' music in general actually, but give me all the different types of sad / dreary / melancholic etc. I have adjusted somewhat to accept happier things where music is concerned, yet I am by nature not accustomed to feelings of joy, so this can prove difficult again though, I'm not sure if these are biases or preferences... both, perhaps?
ArsMoriendi 11.16.23	Maybe it’s a bias A lot of people on Sput seem to devalue happy songs (evidence based on that list about top RYM descriptors) and I never understood why. Happiness is often authentic too, but hey bias and preferences are 2 sides of a similar coin I suppose

Zac124 11.16.23	I agree with most of these, but especially 4. Not that there is anything wrong with 4/4 but like mathcore and progressive metal are two of my favourite genres so, yeah. I slightly disagree with 3. That vocal style is either amazing or really irritating. It is very 50/50 for me.
myri14 11.16.23	I think I pay attention to atmosphere a lot, and a lot of my favorite bands and electronic musicians have atmosphere as an important element to whatever I'm really into by them. Especially love when music feels swirly, dense, intoxicating, and/or crazy in any combination.

Start with The Seer if you want something dark,cosmic and primal or with Glowing Man which isn't quite as dark. Both are excellent

Multiple, even. + Sad, slow, quiet, with atmospheric production generally wins me over. + Bias towards the bands I like—usually rating their poorer releases higher than avg. - I find a massive discog a little too intimidating to dive in unfortunately. Just not enough time.

But if an album can stray from it successfully and still hit all the other boxes, yeah good chance I'll love it. But again, The Poison isn't even one of my 5's at this point let alone a top 50, so it's strange that Drifter keeps harping on it.

I'm guessing you must enjoy going chrono / being a completionist, but eliminating the possibility of checking out any material by artists with larger discogs would fill me with sadness
