1990's Mashups

The mid- to late-1990's had something special regarding genre-blending. Honestly, these were exciting times - as genres were being blurred and there was freedom to play whatever. Some classic albums (and/or genres) that mashed up styles into a strongly cohesive product are as follows. Ultimately, nu metal in the early 2000's capitalized on this genre blending, but became dispensable, redundant, and inessential - choking on their own sword a few years thereafter.
1Soundtrack (Film)
Judgement Night

Mashed up hard rap with 90's alternative and metal
2The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Question the Answers

Mashing up hardcore with ska. Not the first, and one of many ska punk bands during this time period.
3Soundtrack (Film)
Spawn: The Album

Mashed up nu metal with electronica
4Fear Factory
Remanufacture

Already a strong mashup between industrial and metal, with death metal-influenced and clean vocals; this album further mixed FF with strong electronica
5Deftones
Adrenaline

Most would note Korn here - but I saw Deftones as more of the mashup of alternative and metal, with rap elements.
6Incubus (USA-CA)
Enjoy Incubus

Mashed up alternative rock/metal with jazz and strong Mr. Bungle worship; and incorporated DJ elements
7The Urge
Receiving the Gift of Flavor

Mashed up metal and ska elements
8System of a Down
System of a Down

A mashup of alternative metal with Armenian roots. The Apex Theory was in a similar vein.
9Puya
Puya

A mashup of various metal genres, with strong Latin rhythms and PR music
10Pushmonkey
Pushmonkey

A mashup of 90's alternative and metal, with some nice heavy moments, interesting jazz moments, and a lot of 90's alternative vocal influence
11Boy Hits Car
My Animal

A mashup of metal, new age, and rap-style vocals
12Stuck Mojo
Snappin' Necks

A less cohesive mashup of hard rap and late 80's metal
13downset.
Downset

A mashup of hardcore and rap. Similar artists included Biohazard and Manhole.
14Dub War
Pain

A mashup of hard rock and reggae
15Sepultura
Roots

A mashup of metal with Korn-like tunings, Brazilian influence and rhythms, and Sepultura's own distinctive style
