| Ozzfest 2004
In 2022 - Loudwire ranked Ozzfest 2004 as the #2 Ozzfest of all time. Nearly 20 years ago - ventured down from ATL to Tampa, FL to see this show. Was huge into Slipknot and had to see Black Sabbath. Wasn't even paying attention to Hurricane Ivan bearing down on Tampa. Got there in the morning when the gates opened. Some recollections are fuzzy, others are less so - noting before I lose them. The following are the bands that I recall seeing. Supposedly Atreyu, Otep, and God Forbid we’re there, and I’m a fan of each, but don’t recall seeing either and can’t remember why. | | 1 |  | DevilDriver
DevilDriver
I was a pretty huge Coal Chamber fan back in the day. They are a truly-underappreciated contributor to early nu-metal (when it was good). As such, wasn't a huge shift to become a fan of DevilDriver as well, with Dez on vocals. Don't recall what exact songs they played, but all were from their first album. Played "Nothing's Wrong", "The Mountain", "I Could Care Less", "Die (and Die Now)", and "Meet the Wretched" at other Ozzfest shows. A good set. | | 2 |  | Lacuna Coil
Comalies
Had never heard Lacuna Coil unitl this concert. Immediately fell in love with them, as they played a brief 4-song set including "Swamped", "DayLIght Dancer", Tight Rope", and "Heaven's a Lie". Instantly thereafter purchased their Comalies CD - and proceeded to listen to it like 10 times on the gridlocked trip back. After Ozzfest - drove through the night in bumper-to-bumper traffic back to ATL (getting away from Hurricane Ivan). | | 3 |  | Black Label Society
The Blessed Hellride
BLS played an early and fairly short set on the main stage. "Stillborn" was a highlight. Wasn't a huge fan of BLS back then, so more remember just watching Zakk Wylde. Dude was and is a true virtuoso on the guitar. Ultimately became a part of the ATL Chapter several years later. | | 4 |  | Lamb of God
Ashes of the Wake
LOG played on the main stage, and played tracks off of New AMerican Gospel to Ashes of the Wake. Similar to BLS, wasn't a huge LOG fan at the time. Don't remember their set very well. Loved some metalcore, but wasn't into the nearly all harsh vocals that LOG sported. Over the years - have accrued my share of LOG albums - and even read Randy's biography - but am not a huge LOG fan. | | 5 |  | Superjoint
A Lethal Dose of American Hatred
Being a fan of both Pantera and Down, made sure to watch Phil with his side band. Can't remember exactly what they played, but they played "Antifaith", "Fuck Your Enemy", "Personal Insult", "Waiting for the Turning Point", and "4 Songs/Ozena" at other Ozzfests that year. Recall sitting on and seeing this show from the lawn - and a pretty good set. | | 6 |  | Slipknot
9.0: Live
Seeing Slipknot headline the second stage - this is a memory I will never forget. It was hot as 500 degrees hell waiting for them in the FL sun - and they came out late. Would have waited longer - as this performance was my primary reason for coming to Ozzfest. Similar to this album, they came onto the stage just after Ozzy stating over the loudspeaker that "Slipknot would not be performing this evening". What an incredible set - starting with "742617000027" and (sic). | | 7 |  | Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
They then played "The Blister Exists" off of Vol. 3 - one of may fav tracks of theirs. They were all sporting the Vol. 3 masks - and all of the nine were present. Corey Taylor was wearing his signature Vol 3 mask, with multi-colored (dyed) long hair. They also played "Duality" off this album. I recall them playing "Pulse of the Maggots", but this doesn't show up on the formal setlist for the Tampa show. | | 8 |  | Slipknot
Iowa
The remainder of the set was primarily classic tracks including "Disasterpiece", "The Heretic Anthem", "Spit it Out", "Wait and Bleed", "(515), "People = Shit", and "Surfacing". Mostly off of Iowa. What an amazing show - even had to pull people out of the crowd - as the FL heat and energy coming off the stage was just all encompassing - some people couldn't handle it. I think, in the process of waiting for and watching Slipknot, I missed both Dimmu Borgir and Slayer - and honestly couldn't give a shit. Living After Midnight

Nativity in Black - A Tribute to Black Sabbath
I am a huge BS fan. When I was younger - I had heard several of their songs from others. Didn't have any of their albums at that point - but can still remember someone in my grade blasting some "Iron Man". But it wasn't until the late 1990's, where I really got into it. Primarily because of the two Nativity In Black tribute albums - these translated BS in a new language that spoke to me. And Geezer's religion-themed lyrics (e.g., "After Forever") - really resonated. | | 11 |  | Black Sabbath
Past Lives
Seeing Black Sabbath, as Hurricane Ivan approached the Tampa - Ford Amphitheatre was incredible. At this time of the day, the sun had gone down and it was pretty dark. And in the background, behind the amphitheater, thunderstorms were swiftly rolling in (from Ivan) and lighting up the backdrop. In retrospect, shocked that this show kept going (given the pending weather conditions) - but it did. | | 12 |  | Black Sabbath
Reunion
Black Sabbath played a great set, including early career highlights: "War Pigs", "N.I.B.", "Fairies Wear Boots", "Into the Void" (my favorite BS song), "Sweet Leaf", "Black Sabbath", "Snowblind", "Iron Man", "Children of the Grave", and "Paranoid". Ozzy was classic recent Ozzy - reading the teleprompter, small controlled jumps, plenty of F-bombs. Iommi and Butler were fairly static - but their sound was, as always, huge. Couldn't see the drummer well - can't remember whether it was Ward or not. A monumental set and show. | |
