New York, New York

Was talking to a friend from Long Island, NY the other day. He had grown up seeing live the bands below. I had also been influenced by these bands in the early 1990's. Struck me that (after the temporary demise of 80's hard rock [e.g., Anthrax, Dream Theatre]) NY alternative and metal had a huge influence in the early 1990's - keeping metal alive through grunge and post-grunge. And then, around 1995/1996 - when nu-metal came around - focus shifted to the west coast - and several of these bands either broke up (e.g., White Zombie) or just shifted out of the public eye (e.g., Prong). Not listed in any specific order.

One of my all-time favorite 90's alternative bands. This album and Betty were monumental. Was awesome seeing their 30-30 concert.

Seeing Peter Steele live - twice - was a highlight of my college years. IMO, this was their best album ever.

One of the few of these bands that stayed somewhat relevant during nu metal years.

Seems cliche now - but the Satanist schtick really struck for real on this album - and in subsequent album AstroCreep 2000. Made albums like Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil look like a joke.

A harrowing album for dark times.

Prove You Wrong


Along with Pantera, this band (and this album in particular) had huge influence on me. Unconditional and prove You Wrong are classic tracks, as was Snap Your Fingers, Snap your Neck on Cleansing.

Built to Last


Didn't listen to this band a lot, but had some influence.
9Quicksand
Slip


More influential in tone than most would have imagined. Slip is still standout to this day. And still kicking out great albums.
